Book Review: About Come and Get It

When I figured out what Kiley Reid was doing, I started writing down the names of brands. Papyrus, Ziploc, Zillow, Ikea, Amy’s, Red Vines, Lubriderm – these are just some of the companies and products mentioned in the first few chapters of Red’s second novel, “Come and Get It.”

Reid’s first book, “Such a Fun Age,” was about tensions between a Black babysitter and a white mother in Philadelphia. It became very popular and even got nominated for the Booker Prize. Now, Reid’s new book takes place at a college campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The story feels light and easy to read, but it’s really about serious issues like money and ethics in America.

The book follows three main characters: Agatha, a visiting professor who is recovering from a breakup; Millie, a senior resident assistant who wants financial stability; and Kennedy, a transfer student running away from a bad situation at her old college.

Reid is really good at observing society. She knows exactly when a small detail or line of dialogue will make readers think. For example, when Agatha interviews some students in Millie’s dorm, they act like typical young people, not really thinking about how their words might sound to others. But Reid doesn’t judge her characters; she just shows them as they are.

Agatha ends up selling slightly edited versions of her interviews to Teen Vogue, and she pays Millie to let her listen in on conversations in the dorm. Millie wants to buy a house, so she’s willing to bend the rules a little. Kennedy is scared of new relationships and relies on food and self-help books for comfort. Reid explores how these characters are shaped by what they consume and what they desire.

“Come and Get It” is a story about everyday consumerism and how it affects our lives. Reid doesn’t criticize her characters for wanting things; she just shows how money drives them, like it does for all of us. And with her sharp observations about American culture, Reid proves she’s a writer who understands the world we live in.
