CHAPTER 136: CURSED AND SHAMELESS

When Yu Xuan awoke, fragments of information had surged into his mind, knowledge about the two eggs... and an ugly truth about himself.

He was cursed.

When the eggs had merged into his forehead, it had been like a purification ritual.

His spirit and soul had been scoured clean, the contract with the eggs burning away the corruption. And with that cleansing came knowledge, not just of the curse’s existence, but of its hunger.

His killing intent flared, hot and sharp. He had to force himself to breathe deeply, fingers curling so tightly that blood welled from his healing palm again.

Now that the pieces had fallen into place, the truth was unavoidable.

These eggs truly lived up to the title Exotic Divine Life of Heaven and Earth. They had not only saved him, but he might have even discovered the reason the Tower of Trials existed alongside the other towers.

The curse had been feeding on his spirit for who knows how long, gnawing at the edges, trying to worm its way into his soul.

It had failed, and the reasons were unknown. Now that he was cultivating, however, his spirit had been growing and the curse had been growing stronger with it.

’The soul is the basis of a person’s existence. From the soul manifests the spirit. From the spirit manifests the will. Through the will, we influence the material.’

The chant surfaced in his mind, a gift from the eggs. He etched it into his memory — it would be a weapon for the future.

But now came the question that sank its claws into him, how long had this curse been with him?

Since birth? When the time he awakened? Or the moment he stepped into the Heaven Immortal Sect?

If it had been there from the very beginning... why hadn’t his parents noticed? His mother, a master of soul arts, could weave illusions that trapped even seasoned cultivators and yet, this thing had slipped past her.

Was he cursed by someone stronger than her?

Recently, he’d been sleeping more than usual. Now he understood his spirit had been staggering under the weight of the curse’s constant drain.

The realization that someone had been pulling his strings from the shadows made him furious.

And then there was his so-called "system" — a useless thing that only surfaced when it pleased, giving no warnings, no status checks, no hint of the danger.

He didn’t know who had done this, or why. But one thing was certain: because he had survived, the one who placed it would regret it. And when he found them...

The consequences would be catastrophic.

But now he was fragile and weak, so he would diligently cultivate, taking his revenge himself.

Yu Xuan stepped out of the Tower of Trials, the weight of a new locket resting cool against his neck.

Nestled within, the two eggs glimmered softly; one radiating a shifting blue and white light, the other wrapped in a dark, almost metallic luster.

At the exit, he handed his medallion to the disciple on duty, who glanced at the time recorded, scribbled a note, and returned it. The sun hung high, it was afternoon.

He half expected whispers or a small crowd.

After all, he’d been inside the Tower for nearly five days.

His trial had ended on the first... but the rest of the time had been consumed by other matters — the fight, the brush with death, the curse. He’d endured enough to fill a lifetime.

But this was the cultivation world. Here, life and death struggles were just another Monday morning job routine. No one cared unless it concerned them.

Suppressing a sigh, he turned toward the nearest teleportation station. In the main city, there were many — there were even telerportation formations in remote villages connected to the peak for poor disciples.

The economy here was superb, with no inflation though taxes existed.

To his relief, the closest teleportation station one was only a thirty minute walk away. After a short wait, his turn came. He presented his inner disciple medallion, earning free passage without a word exchanged.

With a low woosh, the world shifted, and he found himself standing in the familiar town at the base of the main peak.

He didn’t linger. Without pause, he began the journey back to the Elemental Heaven Peak.

His mood was heavy. Today was not a day for idle chatter.

He had no patience for the slow walk back, so he ran — cutting through streets, leaping over steps, and ignoring every curious glance.

The climb to the main peak took longer than he liked, and by the time he arrived, the sun was already sinking into night.

At the base of the mountain, he paused for a moment, looking up at the familiar silhouette stabbing into the clouds.

He still couldn’t understand why every cultivation sect seemed obsessed with building peaks high enough to challenge the sky. Was it tradition? Symbolism? Or did they just think it looked cool?

Without stopping at his own quarters, he began the climb. The steps blurred beneath his feet until he stood before the towering gates of his master’s palace.

"Master! Your disciple wishes to speak!" he called, voice echoing.

The great doors swung open, revealing the hall beyond. At its far end sat his master upon her multicolored throne, the light catching in her eyes like a warning.

"You didn’t even greet me after returning from your mission," she said, her tone level but edged with quiet authority.

"Ah... yes, I failed to greet you, Master. My mind is... distracted," Yu Xuan replied, wearing an exaggeratedly guilty expression.

Her gaze sharpened. "And is your mind no longer distracted now?"

Yu Xuan felt an itch in the back of his mind, why do these old people insist on—

Suddenly he felt his master’s intense gaze and abandoned his thought.

Instead, he took a deep breath, put on his most pitiful face, and declared, "Master... avenge me. Your disciple was cursed!"

The peak master’s eyebrows twitched.
