After Prison, She Shocks the World
Chapter 152 Wu Shi, Don’t Scare Mr. Feng
CHAPTER 152: CHAPTER 152 WU SHI, DON’T SCARE MR. FENG
Feng Yu sat in the connecting area between two carriages of the high-speed train. He stared at the incoming call from his mother before reluctantly answering.
"I haven’t taken leave. I’m on the road. Report complete," he said.
After that, he wanted to hang up. If the conversation continued, his mother would start introducing him to potential dates.
"Don’t hang up yet. Don’t come home tonight; go have dinner at your Uncle Ren’s hotel," she instructed.
"Don’t you always advocate for frugality and avoiding waste? A decent meal at Uncle Ren’s hotel can cost tens of thousands. Doesn’t that sting you?" he protested.
The Feng family wasn’t short of money. However, almost every member was in the military, adhering to strict discipline and avoiding wasteful behaviors.
"Life is about trying new things. Aren’t you sick of cafeteria food every day? I treat you to a nice meal occasionally, and you complain? You’re a real case of a wild boar that can’t appreciate fine bran!"
Feng Yu was speechless. "Comrade Yu, what kind of mother talks about her own son like that? You’re really something!"
"I’ll send you the address later. Go there by yourself," she replied.
Feng Yu couldn’t be bothered to beat around the bush. "Who’s the blind date you’ve lined up for me this time? Let’s hope she doesn’t take one look at me and go home crying about psychological trauma."
"This one is definitely impressive—beautiful, strong, and with a tragic past. I guarantee you’ll like her," she assured.
"Hurry up and tell me her name so I can mentally prepare," he urged.
"What mental preparation do you need? Just charge in there with that big, dark face of yours; that’ll be enough," she retorted.
Yu Sihui finished speaking and hung up the call with great decisiveness.
Feng Yu was long accustomed to this. Being afraid of one’s wife was an excellent tradition passed down in the Feng family. He didn’t have a wife to be afraid of yet, so he could only symbolically be afraid of his own mother.
Feng Yu wasn’t opposed to blind dates. Given his job, a blind date was basically the only way for him to meet women. Usually, on the army base, he rarely even saw a sow, let alone a woman of the opposite sex. The main issue was that the outcomes of his past blind dates hadn’t been particularly wonderful, which had led him to develop a bit of an aversion to the whole activity.
Before getting off the train, Feng Yu changed into casual clothes. Since he was meeting a blind date, he couldn’t be too casual, or the ’leaders’ in his family would give him an earful. Too formal, and he couldn’t stand it himself. So, he compromised and chose a casual suit.
He took a taxi to Ren Ye’s hotel and went directly to the top-floor restaurant.
He walked towards the table number his mother had sent him.
His date hadn’t arrived yet.
He sat down first and bowed his head to ’check-in’ with his family. This was to avoid a bunch of people nagging him for not updating them on his wellbeing.
As he was typing, he sensed someone sit down across from him.
Feng Yu looked up. Even with his composure, he was taken aback.
This... was his blind date? The person looked to be almost 1.9 meters tall. Are young women these days all that tall? And shyly wearing a mask? Was this some kind of role-play?
Wu Shi coldly observed Feng Yu. "Are you Feng Yu?"
Feng Yu raised an eyebrow, keenly feeling a powerful aura emanating from the man. This man bore hostility towards him!
"Am I that famous already?" he quipped.
"What’s your mindset coming to meet her?" Wu Shi countered, not answering his question.
He was seething with a tumultuous rage, wanting to hack the man before him to pieces at any moment. However, the thought of Fu Bing made him restrain himself. Fu Bing should have the chance to meet new men; she needs more options.
Feng Yu was dumbfounded by his question. "What?"
Wu Shi repeated the question.
Feng Yu narrowed his eyes. "Are you in love with the woman I’m supposed to be on a blind date with?"
"You just need to answer my question."
"Bro, if you like her, just say it directly. There’s no need to threaten me."
"Wu Shi, don’t scare Mr. Feng."
Fu Bing’s voice carried over with the night breeze.
Before Feng Yu’s ears could even process the voice, he had already turned his head.
Fu Bing wore a long dress the color of distant, misty mountains, her shoulder-length hair simply pinned at the back of her head with a hairpin. She wore only light makeup. Her complexion was clear and beautiful, her lips just lightly tinted.
Feng Yu almost immediately recognized Fu Bing and exclaimed incredulously, "Movie Queen Fu?"
"Hello, Mr. Feng," Fu Bing said, sitting down next to Wu Shi. "This is my friend, Wu Shi. He was just joking with you earlier. I saw it was almost time for our meeting, so I asked him to come up and let you know."
Feng Yu’s head buzzed. The woman he was on a blind date with was the goddess of half the soldiers on base!
"That’s alright. Have your injuries healed?"
He had heard from the privates under him that she had recently been in a major car accident.
"They’ve healed a lot. However, I’m not sure if there will be any aftereffects, so please don’t mind. Uncle Ren worries too much; he started arranging things for my future before I had even fully recovered. It’s good that you know I’ve been injured; I was afraid of keeping it from you and causing a misunderstanding."
Feng Yu shook his head. "I don’t mind."
Before the words were even out of his mouth, Wu Shi shot him several fierce glares.
Feng Yu cleared his throat lightly. "Sister Bing, what would you like to eat? Let’s order first."
"You’ve just returned to Jiangnan, so you’re practically a guest. You order first."
"Then let’s each choose some dishes."
"Okay."
Feng Yu suppressed the little excitement in his heart, not allowing himself to act like an utter goofball. Thanks to the privates under his command, he already knew a fair bit about Fu Bing.
After Fu Bing handed the menu to the waiter, she said, "I’ve heard Uncle Ren mention Mr. Feng and your family, and I can’t help but feel inadequate, thinking the difference between us is too great. Even if I stretched my neck and strained as hard as I could, I might not reach the Feng family’s standing. I wanted to make this clear to you, Mr. Feng, to avoid any misunderstandings. We can communicate as friends, without being confined to the roles of blind date partners."
Feng Yu knew Fu Bing was purposefully giving him an out, an opportunity to decline.
This was the first time Feng Yu had actually enjoyed a blind date. If everyone on a blind date could discuss their true feelings so openly, who would be so averse to them?
Feng Yu said solemnly, "Sister Bing, don’t be in a hurry to reject me. You might have heard about my situation from Uncle Ren. I’ve been mostly in the military and rarely go out. Opportunities to meet women have been rare, so I treat each blind date as an important way to make friends. Of course, the fact that I’m still going on these dates means I haven’t found success yet. If you don’t find me too disagreeable, perhaps we could get to know each other better."
Wu Shi’s sharp, knife-like glares kept shooting at Feng Yu.
Feng Yu remained seemingly unaware.
He continued, "I’m 27 this year and have accumulated quite a bit of leave to visit family. If you’re willing, I’d like us to spend more time together. Don’t worry about what my family thinks. If they were willing to arrange this blind date, it means they have no objections to you. Don’t bother about the matter of matching social standing. If that were the case, I’d have to marry one of my childhood buddies."
Fu Bing nodded. "Thank you for your honesty."
"You were the one who was candid first, which encouraged me to be candid as well," Feng Yu said sincerely. "I know to some extent about your relationship with Qin Jinhai. It was an unsuccessful romance, not an indelible stain. I don’t see it as a mark against you. If you’re not ready to accept someone new, we can take it step by step."
If it meant spending the next few decades with Fu Bing, waiting a little longer was nothing to him.
At that moment, a phrase netizens often say popped into Feng Yu’s mind.
"The moment I saw her, I’d already picked out names for our children."
He used to think such sayings were exaggerated. Turns out, he just hadn’t experienced enough to understand the joy of love at first sight.
Fu Bing instinctively felt some resistance but didn’t show it.
Her heart couldn’t remain etched with Qin Jinhai’s name forever. She, too, should welcome new people and try to start a new Chapter in her life.
