After Prison, She Shocks the World
Chapter 238 She Won’t Give Me a Chance to Live
CHAPTER 238: CHAPTER 238 SHE WON’T GIVE ME A CHANCE TO LIVE
Su Junhui stared at Su Qinnuan, as if trying to peer into the depths of her soul.
"You’re very clear-headed. I’m giving you a chance. Leave the person behind you, and I can protect you completely."
"Why should I believe you?" Su Qinnuan countered.
Su Junhui was slightly taken aback for a moment.
Su Qinnuan continued, "If someone behind me is pushing this, why should I believe you can help me get rid of them? And for what reason would you help me?"
"Mr. Su, I am of no value to you. The only value I might have is to disgust you. I’ve taken the place of the sister in your heart. It’s already commendable that you haven’t tried to suppress me. Would you actually help me?"
Su Qinnuan put down her glass. "Sorry, I didn’t grow up with fairy tales, and I don’t believe they exist in this world. I’d rather trust what I see."
With that, she stood up and strode away.
The early spring night wind was so cold it chilled her heart.
She never had a choice. She was like a roadside thorn, growing wild after being suppressed.
Su Qinnuan returned to her apartment and relayed the message to Su Nu.
After reading it, Su Nu said to Old Mrs. Su, "The Fourth Young Master just went to see Su Qinnuan. He’s very certain that Su Qinnuan isn’t the Little Miss. It looks like they already know who the Little Miss is. Su Qinnuan, the chess piece we painstakingly placed, might be of no use now."
Thinking of the useless Su Kexin, and now Su Qinnuan, Old Mrs. Su couldn’t help but feel angry.
"Are we supposed to just sit here and wait to die?"
Su Nu was also unsure what to do. "Su Qinnuan is now being watched by several groups; it’s difficult to make a move against her. And we must prevent her from being used by others. This is not an easy move to make."
"Didn’t Han Liying just go to meet her?"
"It seems they didn’t reach an agreement. Su Qinnuan’s demands were too high; she was unwilling to cooperate." Su Nu was very dissatisfied with Su Qinnuan’s performance this time. If Su Qinnuan manages to walk away from this unscathed, she’ll completely escape her past life. All those years Old Mrs. Su spent scheming her grand plan, only for it to end so dismally! It’s such an injustice to her.
"I’ll give her another warning," Su Nu said. "If she doesn’t listen, I’ll make her disappear like the other children."
Old Mrs. Su waved her hand. "You don’t need to tell me about these things. Arrange it yourself."
Old Mrs. Su didn’t care at all about the life or death of an insignificant person. If Su Qinnuan proved ineffective, there was no use keeping her around. Her death was the only way to prevent her secrets from being revealed.
Su Qinnuan didn’t receive a reply from Su Nu.
A sense of foreboding grew in her heart. She couldn’t help thinking of her companions who had disappeared one after another, and her heart tightened.
Su Qinnuan looked into the deep darkness and decided to pack her things and leave.
She trusted no one!
When she got downstairs, she saw the ever-present Su Junhui.
Su Junhui glanced at the bag in her hand. "Going out so late?"
"For us corporate drones, overtime isn’t a matter of early or late." Su Qinnuan said, then after a quick thought, added, "If you’re curious, you can join me for overtime."
Su Junhui smiled. "You’re very smart."
After getting into his car, Su Qinnuan murmured, "I hope I can make it through this alive."
"If you’re willing to tell me everything, I can help you," Su Junhui said. "Even if my abilities are limited, I have several brothers who can lend a hand."
"Compared to you all, I trust Fu Bing, whom I met earlier today, more."
"As long as you don’t plan to use her, you can get close to her," Su Junhui replied instinctively.
"Do you like her?"
"Who wouldn’t like her?" Su Junhui countered.
"No one could bring themselves to hate her." Su Qinnuan took a deep breath. "If only I were as lucky as her assistant, to meet Fu Bing in a moment of desperation. Even though following her wouldn’t be easy, my heart would be at ease."
Su Junhui didn’t speak.
Instead of taking Su Qinnuan to the company, Su Junhui drove around Jiangcheng late at night.
Jiangcheng had thousands of roads, bustling with traffic during the day, leaving no gaps. At night, they were quiet and empty, creating an inexplicable sense of unease.
Su Qinnuan looked at the familiar yet strange streets, all of which bore witness to her efforts and hardships.
While growing up, she had believed that if she just worked hard enough, she could have a bright future. Yet, she still found herself with no way out.
Su Junhui stopped the car outside Su Junxian’s villa.
Su Junxian was waiting for them.
He looked at Su Qinnuan. "You have a beautiful name. For that name alone, you deserve our good treatment. Please, come in."
Su Qinnuan couldn’t immediately assess the situation and watched Su Junxian warily.
Su Junxian poured them tea and got straight to the point. "Miss Su, we know who our sister is, and it’s not you. I’ve investigated your background; you’ve had a difficult journey. If you don’t want to be drawn into this turmoil, I can guarantee your safety and will arrange for your protection."
"How can I trust you?"
"You don’t have a choice."
His words didn’t convince her.
He pointed outside. "At least two groups of people are watching you. If you didn’t want to live, you wouldn’t have fled in the middle of the night."
Su Qinnuan swallowed hard. "Of course, I want to live."
"Good," Su Junxian said. "I will do my utmost to protect you. In exchange, I need to know who is behind you."
Su Qinnuan knew she had no way out.
"Will you believe what I tell you?"
"I will verify it."
"Alright. Give me some sketching paper and a pencil."
Su Junhui handed her a sketchbook.
Su Qinnuan didn’t speak, instead lowering her head to draw.
She made four sketches and handed them to Su Junxian.
"In all these years, she’s the only one I’ve seen. She was always the one who contacted me."
After examining all four sketches, Su Junxian asked, "When did you first see her?"
"When I was nine, I was taken away along with nine other children. We were locked in a pharmaceutical company’s laboratory. The others all died, leaving only me."
"Do you know who she is?"
"I don’t. She gave us all the same name: Su Qinnuan. That name was a curse for all ten of us."
"I’ll tell you," Su Junxian said. "She’s our grandmother’s most trusted confidante."
Su Qinnuan looked at Su Junxian in surprise.
"Your grandmother found someone to impersonate your sister? Why?"
"I’m curious as well. Please, tell us more specifics."
Throughout their conversation, Su Junxian remained gentle and polite. His voice, magnetic and warm, unconsciously drew listeners into his rhythm.
"She rarely contacted us," Su Qinnuan continued. "After I was the only one left, she stopped appearing in person and only contacted me by phone. A few days ago, she told me it was time to act. The very next day, reporters were swarming my doorstep."
"That made me realize I’ve always been under her surveillance. After seeing him tonight," Su Qinnuan gestured towards Su Junhui, "I had a bad feeling they weren’t satisfied with my performance this time. She probably doesn’t want me anymore."
