After Rebirth: The Alpha Ex-Husband Is Addicted to Me
Chapter 191: Full of Regret
CHAPTER 191: CHAPTER 191: FULL OF REGRET
Lucy told the Baker Clan elders these words without expecting them to believe her, but with the mindset of "better to believe it than not," they would at least harbor some suspicion towards Mason and wouldn’t relay her words to him.
The elder Mr. Baker’s eyes flared with anger, "Is it really true?"
"Mason Baker was hospitalized with a head injury because he made Flora Palmer’s friend ask her out, planning to meet her himself with ill intentions. On one hand, he already liked Flora, and on the other hand, he wanted Flora to vacate her position for Stellan. Unfortunately for him, Flora’s bodyguards were competent and thwarted his plan."
"I don’t believe Mason is such a person!" the elder Mrs. Baker was at a loss.
"I said, Grandma, don’t interrupt. Whether you believe it or not, he is that kind of person; you just haven’t seen his other side. If Grandma wants Dad to really fall into a prison sentence, you can tell him what I just said, and see how he reacts! Grandma truly favors Mason, even though he doesn’t carry the Baker Clan’s blood. Unlike me, as my dad’s only biological daughter, I can’t receive even a bit of your favor. This world is truly peculiar; there are people who are so biased towards males."
The elder Mr. Baker looked discontent, "It’s not entirely about favoring males, after all, he is a child we’ve watched grow up... whether or not he’s the type of person you say he is, we won’t tell him what you just said. Now, Lucy, can you tell Grandpa if there’s a way to save your dad?"
"Yes." Lucy replied, "I have evidence of Your Highness with Stellan Quinn. Imagine the impact if a prince with a wife were exposed for having an affair. Even though this evidence alone isn’t enough for him to spare Dad, I have no other hold over him, so I need to create more. That requires your help."
"Do tell," the elder Mr. Baker quickly said.
"I want you to tell Mason Baker that I have dirt on Your Highness. Say it with weight, and through this, you can verify his relationship with Your Highness."
The elder Mr. and Mrs. Baker exchanged glances and agreed.
"If my dad’s crimes are confirmed, the impact on the Baker Clan is needless to say, and given the Presidential Mansion’s approach, he would at the very least be sentenced to life imprisonment. This is a major issue, and I trust that Grandpa and Grandma understand the seriousness."
"What if we tell Mason what you said, and he’s not connected to Your Highness?" the elder Mrs. Baker asked.
"There’s no such possibility, Grandma. I will let you clearly see through this matter what kind of person your cherished grandson truly is."
...
Leaving the Prime Minister’s Mansion, the elderly couple in the car remained silent.
Halfway through, the elder Mr. Baker spoke, "Blood indeed runs deep. Lucy is truly Jackson’s flesh and blood. Initially, I had no favorable impression of her because she couldn’t tolerate Mason, but now I realize, as a daughter, she’s no worse than a son."
"Who knows if what she said is true."
"Aren’t you supposed to verify it? I feel it’s not baseless talk, not completely fabricated. If what she said is entirely true, this child is absolutely not simple. Regardless, for our son, you mustn’t speak recklessly to Mason."
"Of course I understand. Now it’s a critical moment for Jackson; I know what can and cannot be said."
Once home, Mason approached to greet them, "Grandpa, Grandma, how is Dad?"
"Your dad’s situation is not optimistic, but thankfully there’s Lucy."
Mason was surprised, "Her? What does that mean?"
The elder Mrs. Baker said, "Lucy said your dad’s predicament is because Your Highness is orchestrating from behind the scenes. She claims she has dirt on Your Highness and can definitely save your dad."
Mason was taken aback, "How does she know Your Highness is behind this?"
"She didn’t tell us that, just said she has significant dirt on Your Highness."
"She also didn’t say what kind of dirt?"
"Why would she tell us? We normally don’t have a good relationship with her." The elder Mrs. Baker sighed, "I hope your dad stays safe and overcomes this ordeal."
"He will, definitely." Mason’s expression was pained, "Grandpa, Grandma, although I don’t have much ability, I will try to find a way to save my dad no matter what."
The elder Mrs. Baker nodded, "It’s good that you have this intention. Let’s not stand here any longer; let’s talk inside."
They had just settled inside when Mason’s phone rang. He stood up to return to his room to answer it.
As he left, the elder Mrs. Baker followed.
It was a call from Stellan Quinn. The first thing Mason said upon picking up was, "My grandparents just returned and said Lucy knows Your Highness is the mastermind, and she claims to have dirt on Your Highness, but they don’t know what kind..."
The elder Mrs. Baker was about to go in and question him but was pulled back into the bedroom by Mr. Baker.
"Don’t stop me, I want to ask him why?!" Tears streamed down Mrs. Baker’s face, "I’ve cherished him so much, how can he treat us like this?"
"Now is not the time to expose him. If he’s exposed, he’ll assume Lucy and Stellan have no real evidence..." Mr. Baker exhaled deeply, "Don’t lose your composure, this is a major matter concerning our son. Bear with it."
Mrs. Baker beat her chest in anguish, "I feel like there’s a crack in my heart now. We’ve been so good to that child, always considering him in everything, yet he aligns with those framing his dad..."
"Someone else’s child remains someone else’s child," Mr. Baker said helplessly, "I used to hear people say genes are powerful; I was dismissive. His biological parents weren’t good people; can you expect him to have a conscience?"
Mrs. Baker was deeply saddened, shedding tears continuously. Her husband’s words felt like a slap across her face, triggering a wave of regret and sorrow over the past.
——
Just as Lucy anticipated, she received notice to enter the Presidential Mansion in the afternoon.
But she did not go.
If she enters the Presidential Mansion, can she still be free?
At least outside, Arthur Bennett has no rationale to act against her.
By evening, Arthur himself called her.
The intention was all too evident: to probe whether she truly held evidence against him.
But he was cautious enough not to reveal anything through his words.
He left an address for a teahouse in Northriver City, asking Lucy to go there.
Only then did Lucy accept the invitation.
She brought along several bodyguards.
Upon arriving at the teahouse, Arthur’s bodyguards were standing outside; naturally, her own couldn’t enter.
"You must be searched before entering, we kindly ask for your understanding." Arthur’s female bodyguard scanned her with a detector, finding nothing, as Lucy brought nothing with her, fully aware of Arthur’s caution in such a moment.
