CHAPTER 498: DON VINO (4)

Abi sat back in the chair as soon as the call ended.

"Is it really going to be okay?" Abram asked worriedly, as he was still not rest assured just yet. What were they going to do if this fell through? What would happen to their baby?

The man they had spoken to had valid concerns, but they could not afford to think of the risk. Sometimes, it was better to take such risk, but was this the time?

Something else was bugging Abi, and it only took a quick moment for it to sink in.

It had not yet occurred to her how the man had called her until this moment.

’Did he call me by that name? That fool!’

Abi cursed him in her mind, wishing she could get rid of him entirely. At that moment, she had a clearer mind, knowing that the transaction was about to go through, and it was then that another realization struck.

"FUCK!"

There was a rule of thumb between her and her associates. Abi never knew that she would be the one to break it.

Inside a surveillance van parked a few miles away, one of the detectives shot up from his seat.

"Don Vino!" he whispered, before slamming a triumphant hand against the mini desk. "That’s it. That’s the code name. We got her!"

His partner grinned and also shot up to high-five him, except he jumped too high, and his head hit the van’s ceiling.

"Ouch! Ouch!"

He rubbed his head, but the grin never left his face. The other one shook his head, and stretched. One thing that they would all come to agree on was that, they had never expected it to be Abi in that household!

This was one of three squads scattered at vantage points and rotating for this monitoring. They had started with including different people, but somewhere along the line, they had just focused on the Mush household. This detective could not believe that they had the privilege of hitting the jackpot.

These few officers involved in the various stakeouts, were the only ones who had stuck with Leon and had therefore been relegated to the back like he was. In fact, to their colleagues, these detectives were perceived as being idle. The cramped space inside the van burst with a jubilant energy that could not be easily stifled.

He pressed a small button,

"Were you able to trace the call?"

"YES!!!!! She used an unsecure line! I can’t believe that... also that mysterious guy who came in this morning is a genius! I don’t know what he did, but he had their location triangulated in just a few seconds!"

"Haha! She is a mother after all! I started doubting it was her when she did not make any move after the raid.... But this!!!! OMG!"

The intercom lit up with chatter as everyone scrambled to follow up on the person who had been on the other side of the line.

"I’m glad that we do not have to go through the old chief!"

"Didn’t you hear the other calls? He had been working with this Don person, and that was why we never had any chance at all! I can’t believe that he would do that to his team! He’s going down hard!"

"Yh, he is... let me report this to Leon.... I mean, Chief Leon... heheheehe ... we have the confirmation ..."

"Let the tactical team on standby go in... You’ve done a good job!"

"Yes Sir!"

Back in the Mush mansion’s courtyard, a maid on her knees cleaning the tiled floor paused as the transmission reached her hidden earpiece. Her hand trembled slightly, but she didn’t stop scrubbing. Her eyes glistened with restrained emotion. After months of pretending, months of menial labour and playing dumb, this was the moment they had worked toward.

She dipped the cloth back in the bucket, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

It was over.

Or at least ... it had just begun.

She itched to jump for joy, but her cover needed to stay in place for a while. Knowing that was her cue, she stood up, leaving the half-finished cleaning task and entered a small room, changing swiftly. The Mush family thought that this was the only mistake they had made, but they would probably never know that this had started several months back.

In the study, Abi shot up in her chair and looked down at the landline with er mouth gaping.

"What is it, dear?"

Abram had yet to catch on as he was still worried,

"I used the unsecure line! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! What is wrong with me?! How could I commit such a novice mistake?!"

"But- It’s only one time; I am sure that it will not cause an-"

Abi understood what Abram was saying, but she could not shake off that feeling. If any of her subordinates had done this, it would have warranted immediate death from her orders. They could not afford any mistakes in their line of work. She knew the consequences of being rushed, but Abi had failed to control herself. Nothing had happened yet, but it was her instincts, sharpened from years of survival and betrayal, that flared like a struck match.

"Listen to that!"

"What?" Abram asked, frowning. He just wanted them to get moving, but-

"Just... silence."

Abram: "..."

’What is wrong with the silence?’ He thought,

"Something is wrong!"

She shouted, not bothering to hide her panic anymore,

"Full security lockdown. Now!" She shouted into the air, but nothing happened.

It was as if Abi knew that this would happen. She opened her drawer and brought out a pretty little gun - the deadliest that ever existed, but one that could pass for a toy.

"What’s wrong, dear?"

"ABRAM!"

Abi was usually in charge of such affairs, and he usually took the back seat, but Abram also understood, especially with Abi’s mounting exasperation. Reaching into a hidden side panel, he also brought out a similar gun. Abi’s wits had gotten them out of more than they cared, so he knew when to obey.

Abi’s heels clicked down the marble floor as she reached for the hidden drawer behind her bookshelf for the secondary activation of the lockdown. Just as her fingers closed around a small black box, her entire world shattered -

BOOM!

The main gates exploded inward with a thunderous crack, resounding through the entire mansion. It was too late! Black-clad officers similar to those who had raided the island poured through, shouting commands in clipped, brutal tones. Windows shattered. Sirens erupted.

"Hands where we can see them!"

"Narcotics Bureau! On the ground, now!"

The courtyard erupted in chaos. Maids dropped to the ground with hands behind their heads, trembling and afraid, as agents swept through the mansion. It turned out that the basement of the Mush mansion was a huge narcotics lab. Guards were cuffed, dragged and dragged out.

Abi froze, lips parting in shock as she backed away from the bookshelf, gun still in hand.

"Ma’am, drop it!" shouted one of the lead agents, his gun trained on her. It had taken them mere seconds from the main gate to her office, indicating that there was a mole in the house. Their pathways were too complex for outsiders to easily find it.

She met the officer’s eyes with cold fury, realizing now that she had been outplayed. Her empire, so carefully curated, was crumbling right before her all because of ne silly mistake. She clenched her jaw - and dropped the gun. This was a fight that Abi knew she would not win. Her mind was already too much of a mess thinking of her daughter. The old her, would have gotten out unscathed. She had not earned the name Don Vino for no reason.

"Watch out!"

Someone screamed as Abram, who had conveniently hidden, shot at the main officer, but missed. He, however, sustained a gunshot injury to his arm when another officer shot simultaneously.

He dropped the gun and shouted but was restrained immediately!

Abi’s eyes widened as she saw the one who had shot Abram – the maid she had employed only months prior! It was her!

This was the same one she had met a few moments before the call that had done her over with!

Both Abi and Abram watched her in resentment as they were cuffed and whisked away, amidst the sudden swarm of media.

Outside, the air reeked of chemicals as the lab was cleared and evidence bagged. And amidst the noise, the undercover maid stood silently, watching the queen fall.

It was such a fulfilling day for her that she couldn’t help but grin wildly. Her lithe figure slipped away through a quiet side path, which was usually reserved for the workers and therefore did not have that much activity then. She welcomed the sound of silence when the door closed behind her. She quickly exited onto a path, leading out of the estate.

Upon reaching the shade of a weathered tree, she retrieved a worn burner phone. With shaking fingers, she dialled a number long memorized but rarely used. The call connected after two rings.

For a moment, she also said nothing, suddenly feeling overwhelmed from all that had gone on.

Then, her voice, low and steady, cut through the dusk.

"Don’t worry... it’s done. You’ve been avenged."

Another pause.... A longer one this time.

Her breath hitched slightly before she continued, knowing full well that the other party was listening. Her voice was quieter this time ...

"I know you couldn’t help it... this new path, this darkness they dragged you under. But with my line of work..."

A bitter sigh escaped her.

"I can’t help you anymore, Doll .... I like your new name, though.... It suits you. Live well and take advantage of the second chance given...."

Then came the reply from a clear, soft young woman,

"I know, sister...."

"You know? You never called me that before...."

The two women laughed gently,

"I know... but since this is goodbye, I might as well let me remember this warmth!"

There was another slight pause"

"Thank you."

"You take care, Doll!"

The maid-detective quickly ended the call, snapped the small phone in half, and tossed each piece far away in opposite directions.

"Let’s head back into the chaos!"
