Animeverse Kitchen: My Culinary Journey Begins with Glowing Food!
Chapter 55: Jashin-chan Coil!
Jashin-chan woke up exceptionally early today. At three in the morning, sleep had completely abandoned her.
"Ugh… it's no use, I can't sleep!"
This is all my subject's fault!
After tossing and turning in her closet for a while, Jashin-chan rolled over and irritably grabbed her tablet. The screen lit up, illuminating her face. At Ryohei's request, she had contacted her friend from the Demon World, who was supposed to arrive today. But now, she was starting to regret it. Thinking about it, her life in the human world was just pathetic.
She gritted her teeth. She couldn't go back, and she couldn't beat Yurine. To make matters worse, since summoning Ryohei, her status in the household had even dropped by one.
"My life is so miserable! Waaaaah—!"
A wave of sorrow washed over her. Jashin-chan clutched her blanket, two wide rivers of tears streaming down her face.
Ryohei awoke to the morning light being blocked by the heavy curtains, the room still shrouded in a dim haze. As he opened his eyes, a translucent blue screen appeared before him.
[Infinite Gacha System]
[Host]: Ryohei Tanaka
[Ability Traits]: Glowing Cuisine (Gold), Japanese Fluency (White)
[Item Traits]: None
The sun has risen. A new week has begun.
You have received one opportunity to draw a trait. Would you like to begin?
Below the text was a glowing button that read [Draw Trait].
"Whoa—! I can draw a trait?" Ryohei's eyes shot open, instantly wide awake.
He had actually stayed up until midnight last night, waiting to draw his new trait, but the button had been grayed out. He had wondered if he had to wait a full seven days for it to load. Now, it seemed like the reset happened at sunrise. What happens on a cloudy day, then? he wondered, before pushing the thought aside and pressing the button.
The text on the screen vanished, the background turning black as countless points of light flew toward him. In the end, a single, bright white light filled the entire screen.
"..."
So today, I'm yesterday's Jashin-chan, he thought, a little disappointed to see the white color.
But then, the text and voice appeared:
[Congratulations! You have obtained the White-rank Item Trait: Stardew Valley Local Specialties Gift Basket!]
[Effect: Upon extraction, you will receive a gift basket of local specialties from Stardew Valley!]
"Huh?" This was unexpected. Ryohei had been a dedicated Stardew Valley farmer in his past life, so this was a pleasant surprise. "I can get items from a game…?"
Curious to see what was inside, he threw off his covers, went down to the first-floor living room, and extracted the item. Three large wooden crates, each about a meter long, appeared out of thin air.
He opened them one by one.
The first crate was filled with a variety of crops: peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, cauliflower, corn, potatoes, and pumpkins. They all looked to be of excellent quality. He couldn't tell if they were iridium-star, but they were definitely top-tier.
The second crate was a fruit-lover's dream, packed with strawberries, blueberries, grapes, cherries, peaches, apples, melons, and pineapples. His initial disappointment vanished. These two crates of fresh produce alone were amazing. The quality of this white-rank item was unexpectedly high.
He eagerly turned to the third crate. It was filled with artisan goods: eggs, a large jug of milk, dried cranberries, cheese, truffle oil, mayonnaise, and bottles of strawberry, apple, and honey wine.
It was a fantastic haul. But it also brought a new problem: there was way too much of it. They couldn't possibly use it all before some of it spoiled, even with Minos coming.
"What a happy problem to have," he sighed.
Just as he was wondering if he should send some of it to Yurine's family and her uncle, Jashin-chan came downstairs, humming a cheerful tune.
"Yo, good morning, Subject," she said, her mood clearly excellent. Then she noticed the new additions to the living room. "Where did all these fruits and vegetables come from? Did you guys go to the market already?" But the three large wooden crates seemed out of place. And it wasn't like Ryohei and Yurine to go shopping without asking her to help carry things.
"Nope. They're from my Golden Finger," Ryohei explained, one hand on his hip. "I get a new ability or some items every week. Did I not mention that?"
Jashin-chan froze, then went completely blank. Her eyes turned into little dots, and a trail of snot dripped from her nose. Then, the realization hit her, and she completely lost it.
"Wait, I thought your cheat skill was just 'Glowing Cuisine'?! When did it become 'a new ability or some items every week'?! You never told me that!" she shrieked, her voice a machine-gun burst of rage.
Jealousy contorted her face. Jealousy was making her cell walls separate. This is so unfair! We were both summoned here, why is there such a huge difference?!
Her mind was in turmoil. She looked at Ryohei, and a dark impulse took over.
"Damn it! Take this! Jashin-chan Coil!!"
In a flash, she shot across the room and, like a snake, wrapped her thick green tail around Ryohei's torso, constricting him.
"Hehe," she said, hanging off him with a wicked grin. "Feel my pain! The pain in my heart right now is 100 times stronger than this!" She wasn't squeezing hard enough to actually hurt him; she was just overwhelmed with envy and had to take it out on him somehow.
"..." It was uncomfortable, like being squeezed in a very tight hug. Ryohei just looked at the insanely jealous demon wrapped around him and, without a word, tilted his head back and yelled, "YURINE—!"
"Baka—! You're not fighting fair!" Jashin-chan instantly panicked, scrambling to cover his mouth. "Are you a sore loser?! This is between us, why are you calling for Yurine?!" she hissed. "And you're a grown man, aren't you ashamed of calling for help?!"
"Mmph-mmph!"
"What's that? You say you were just calling Yurine down to share the joyous news of all the free fruits and vegetables? And that's all?" Jashin-chan's survival instinct was in overdrive, her words dripping with unsubtle hints.
Ryohei just gave her a disgusted look. Of course.
"Oh! You should have just said so!" the scumbag snake said, releasing his mouth. She unwrapped herself from him, patted his arm, and even smoothed out the wrinkles on his clothes, her expression now perfectly innocent and sweet.
"What's with all the noise so early in the morning?" Yurine called out, coming down the stairs.
Ryohei immediately raised a finger and pointed at Jashin-chan. "She just tried to strangle me with her tail and told me to 'feel her pain'."
"Hey—! You're such a sore loser!" Jashin-chan shrieked, her fur (metaphorically) standing on end. "Are you a grade-schooler?! Tattling on me!"
Stare—!
Feeling the terrifying gaze on her back, Jashin-chan broke out in a cold sweat.
"Jashin-chan," Yurine said, walking over and stepping firmly on her tail. "It seems your tail is getting a little unruly."
"Ahhh—!" Jashin-chan cried out in pain. "It hurts! Get off!"
It was then that Yurine noticed the crates. "Where did these boxes and all this food come from?"
"It's from my Golden Finger," Ryohei explained.
"Ehh…" Yurine covered her mouth, her eyes wide as she looked at him.
Jashin-chan, tears in her eyes, tried desperately to push Yurine's foot off her tail, but it wouldn't budge.
"Yurine, you should take some of this home to your family later," Ryohei said as he began stocking the new, large refrigerator. "And some for your uncle, too, as thanks for letting us use the cart."
"My uncle, maybe. But my family…" Yurine trailed off, a little embarrassed. She hadn't figured out how to tell her parents she had a boyfriend yet. Showing up with gifts the next day seemed a bit much. Annoyed by Jashin-chan's continued struggling, she balled her fist and punched the demon in the gut, knocking the wind out of her.
She lifted her foot from the now-limp tail. "My family can wait… Ryohei-kun, you can just use these to make food to sell."
"Hmm, I don't plan on selling these, and it wouldn't be very convenient anyway," he said, shaking his head. Until his restaurant was open, he planned to continue with the stall; he didn't feel secure without cash on hand. "Besides," he added, "our current setup is for frying and baking, so it's not convenient to make a bunch of vegetable side dishes. And the fruit would have to be made into desserts, but the cart is already at full capacity."
"I was planning to eat most of this ourselves, and give the rest away. And the only people we can really give it to are your family and your uncle," he said frankly.
Yurine scratched her cheek, embarrassed. "Well… alright. I'll take a little bit home, then."
