Apocalypse: Last Traveler
Chapter 55: Goodwill and Malice
CHAPTER 55: CHAPTER 55: GOODWILL AND MALICE
At this moment, Lu Xi’an really wished he had a loudspeaker like Luo Ping, even if it wasn’t installed on the car roof, just holding it to his mouth would save his voice.
Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei waited for a while, but there was no response from the gas station.
Both of them knew they couldn’t wait any longer; to ensure they got fuel, they had to go into this gas station no matter what.
They could only assume that the people in the gas station accepted their proposal, and while being on guard, drove the car inside.
"Gou, first check their location."
Before putting the car in gear and stepping on the gas, Lu Xi’an ordered Gou to go out and take a look.
After the drone circled the gas station, the light in Gou’s eyes pointed towards the direction of the station house, and Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei understood that the people were hiding in the station house.
The station house was on the inner side of the fuel pump, so Lu Xi’an drove over and parked at the outer side of the pumps, letting them slightly block the view from the station house.
Although this gas station was occupied by people, there would still be no electricity.
The apocalypse has been ongoing for decades; is there any power station that can still operate?
If there was a power station still running, wouldn’t there be some signs of civilization recovery in this world? Sharp Brother Luo Ping wouldn’t be in such a hurry, right?
"The electric box is over there."
Yao Wei pointed slightly towards the side of the station house with her gun muzzle and said.
Lu Xi’an directly sent Gou over to connect the power, and the two of them stayed in the car, not rushing to get out, to see what happened after the power was connected.
They both noticed a slight crack in the station house door opening, with someone sneaking a peek outside.
So their guns had a clear target; if anything went wrong, they would shoot towards the station house door.
"Buzz—"
The old gas pump revved up again, emitting a groaning sound under strain.
But no matter what, this gas pump was still usable.
The reading on the gas pump screen, displayed after the groan, proved this.
Their roles were clear; Lu Xi’an turned off the car, while Yao Wei got out with her gun, cautiously manipulating the gas pump.
Just as Yao Wei inserted the fuel nozzle into the car’s gas tank, the station house door suddenly moved, and a small figure quickly darted out.
Yao Wei hurriedly aimed her gun, and Lu Xi’an also raised his micro gun.
But upon closer inspection, they were surprised to find that it was a child who looked only three or four years old that came out of the station house.
The child’s hair was messy like a bird’s nest, lips cracked, and cheeks covered with fine streaks of blood. Even though it had warmed up, he was wrapped tightly and looked filthy.
Seeing him stumble and nearly fall, Lu Xi’an was certain this kid wasn’t a Neo-Human.
Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei didn’t fire rashly, only cautiously keeping their fingers on the trigger.
They didn’t aim the guns at the child, continuing to watch the station house door, now opened by the child.
A person with a haggard appearance quickly chased out, picked up the child, and nodded and bowed repeatedly to Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei, taking the child back inside.
From the looks of it, the people in the station house didn’t seem to have ill intentions.
"Creak—"
The station house door was closed again, quiet inside as if the earlier incident was just an accident.
The stance of the people in the station house indicated their attitude, silently waiting for Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei to leave.
"Buzz—"
The gas pump continued to laboriously operate, filling the car’s tank with gasoline.
After that, Yao Wei took out a fuel can from the car and filled it.
Having done all this, there were still no movements from the station house.
Thus, Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei felt moderately relieved. Yao Wei put the fuel can back into the car, and after Lu Xi’an called Gou back, they prepared to continue their journey.
But just then, the station house door opened again with a "creak."
Yao Wei immediately leaned out of the car, aiming the gun, while Lu Xi’an quickly started the car, ready to put it in gear and accelerate.
Yet there was no attack from the door, just that elderly man cautiously coming out again.
The man held two bottles of mineral water, seeing Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei from afar, he hurriedly squeezed out a flattering smile, revealing his yellow, broken teeth, looking harmless.
He placed the mineral water bottles on the ground, said flattering words twice: "Drink, drink." After speaking, he retreated back into the station house.
Lu Xi’an and Yao Wei exchanged a glance, somewhat puzzled.
They were about to leave, so this gesture seemed unnecessary...
But then, the voice of the previous man came out from inside the station house: "You two are impressive people, encountering us without dealing a fatal blow; we are deeply grateful.
"These two bottles of water are our gift, specially offered to thank you both for sparing us. Please take them."
Lu Xi’an was slightly silent, asked Yao Wei: "Are we really this lucky? All the way from Jiang Yu passing through, with Luo Ping and now this gas station, always encountering good people?"
Yao Wei shook her head, saying: "Don’t trust easily."
Indeed, in this world, surviving means not trusting others easily.
Throughout his journey, the only decent people he met were Yao Wei and Luo Ping.
Yao Wei was only because of the appearance of the hyena, by chance, did they lower their guard and barriers; otherwise, if anything went wrong, they might have pointed guns at each other.
The rest, who wouldn’t fight upon meeting?
The post-apocalyptic harshness, hearts are not pure; in this world now, where is there so much goodwill?
Moreover, Lu Xi’an, traveling from north to south, hadn’t encountered many people, and only when reaching Mozhou City did he see the first group aside from himself.
He knew in this regard, Yao Wei had much more experience than himself, so he would definitely consider Yao Wei’s advice.
"Gou, go check if there’s a problem with the water?"
Lu Xi’an issued an order to the mechanical dog.
The mechanical dog received Lu Xi’an’s new command and immediately jumped off the car, rolling the wheels on its four legs heading towards the mineral water.
Yao Wei took on the task of covering the mechanical dog, while Lu Xi’an looked at the mechanical dog, feeling: "If only they were good people.
"If they were, we could introduce them to Luo Ping as comrades.
"Then the broadcast from our Reconstruction Faction would have served a purpose."
Yao Wei didn’t speak, just kept a steady watch on the station house door.
Meanwhile, Lu Xi’an’s gaze remained on Gou.
Gou had already reached the side of the mineral water bottles, staring intensely at them with its mechanical eyes. Lu Xi’an knew it was scanning the water quality.
Then, he saw Gou turn around, its mechanical eyes flashing twice in his direction.
