CHAPTER 301: CHAPTER 301: INVESTIGATING THE MILITARY BASE

Chu Miao handed the remaining talismans to Ye Xuan, who tucked them away into his space ring without a word.

With a nod of silent understanding, she activated the first talisman, and Ye Xuan followed suit.

A shimmer of energy enveloped them both, rendering them invisible to the naked eye.

Once she confirmed their concealment, Chu Miao reached for Ye Xuan’s hand. Her grip was firm but also gentle like the love she had developed for him. The next instant, they vanished, teleporting toward the military base.

Chu Miao wasn’t familiar with the layout of the base, so she had to rely on instinct and imagination to guide the teleportation.

It was just like a gamble, but fortune favored them.

It seemed that the Chu family ancestors were watching over them. They materialized directly in the heart of the base, right inside the conference room used for high-level and confidential meetings.

The room was empty. There were no guards, no officers, and no surveillance cameras. One could tell from this how important the room was for confidentiality.

This was also a stroke of luck for the two lovers but neither of them relaxed. They kept the invisibility talismans on and remained invisible.

Ye Xuan pulled out the communication device and sent a quick message to Yang Leo. Then he placed a call.

The line connected instantly, and Yang Leo’s voice came through from the other end very clearly. This showed that the signal was strong even at this distance and also confirmed that their communication device was still functional even deep within enemy territory.

"Let’s take a look around before we leave," Chu Miao whispered, her eyes scanning the room.

She wasn’t just curious about this place, she was suspicious and wanted to know if it was more than just a staging ground for attacks on their own soldiers.

She had not forgotten how the leaders had given a kill order on Gu Fan and the rest.

Ye Xuan nodded. "Alright then, let’s go explore the place."

He knew the old saying: Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be defeated.

This base hadn’t made any direct moves against his people yet, likely out of fear; fear of his reputation and of Chu Miao’s previous display of power.

But he was aware that fear was only temporary. Once the floodwaters receded and the military leaders saw an opening, they would strike without hesitation.

He couldn’t afford to be complacent with so many people depending on him.

Using the invisibility talismans, the two silently teleported to different sections of the base.

On the surface, everything seemed normal. Soldiers moved between buildings, some navigating through makeshift bridges and others used the boats tied to windows.

The flood had submerged everything below the seventh floor, turning the lower levels into a watery grave.

Most of the base’s infrastructure had been low-rise, so the majority was now underwater. The remaining tall buildings had been repurposed into cramped living quarters for the soldiers.

In one such dormitory, they appeared inside a twenty-square-meter room outfitted with bunk beds for ten soldiers. Chu Miao’s eyes widened in disbelief. Each soldier had barely two meters of personal space for sleeping, storing gear, and little else.

The conditions were harsh, almost inhumane.

She felt a pang of sympathy. These weren’t just faceless people, they were soldiers who had dedicated their lives to protecting the country, yet they had been enduring such hardship.

But she couldn’t help them. Not now at least. All she could do was hope the floodwaters would recede soon, allowing them to reclaim their previous living quarters.

They continued their silent exploration, teleporting from one area to another. Eventually, they arrived in the living quarters of one of the base’s leaders.

Looking at the immaculate living room, the contrast was stark.

They stood in a spacious living room, elegantly furnished and untouched by the chaos outside. There were plush chairs, polished floors, and a stocked bar.

Luxury in the midst of suffering.

Chu Miao’s expression darkened as she took in the lavish surroundings. The disparity between the soldiers’ cramped dormitories and this opulent suite was jarring.

Silk curtains hung beside reinforced glass windows, and a chandelier, real crystal, not imitation sparkled overhead. A thick rug muffled their footsteps as they moved deeper into the room.

Ye Xuan’s gaze was sharp, scanning for anything out of place.

The instincts he had cultivated through numerous dangerous missions kicked in and Chu Miao’s little general version of the ancient times came to life.

"Let’s check the study, maybe we will find something to work with later." Ye Xuan murmured beside Chu Miao’s ear.

"Okay." Chu Miao agreed immediately and their footsteps lightened as they looked around to find the study room.

The five invisibility talismans had long run out and they had stacked more on themselves.

They soon found a room at the end of the corridor which they assumed was the study and teleported inside.

The walls were lined with bookshelves, but most of the volumes were untouched, showing that they were just decorative rather than functional.

What caught Ye Xuan’s attention was the desk. Instead of the normal wooden desks many people used in their study rooms, this one was sleek and metallic.

What made it even more unique was that the drawers were locked with a biometric scanner.

Chu Miao stood beside it, placing her palm near the scanner. There was no response.

Then she thought of using her spiritual energy to mimic the print of the last person who had activated the scanner.

She gathered spiritual energy on her palm and placed her hand on the scanner.

With a soft click, the first drawer opened.

Inside were various files including a tablet, some flash drives, and a mobile phone.

Ye Xuan looked at the things inside the drawer and was about to pick up the tablet when Chu Miao stopped him.

"Even though we are not afraid of them, we have to be careful for the sake of others." She said while using her consciousness to take out a pair of gloves from her space ring.

She gave them to Ye Xuan who took them without question and put them on. He then picked up the tablet and began scrolling, his eyes narrowed.

"Here," Ye Xuan said, turning the screen toward Chu Miao.

The tablet displayed a series of classified reports, surveillance logs, intercepted communications, and strategic plans.

One folder was labeled Operation Eclipse. Inside were detailed maps of the territory of other military bases, troop movements, and a list of key targets.

This wasn’t what caught their attention but Ye Xuan’s name that was circled in red. So was Chu Miao’s.

"It looks like we’ve become a thorn on their side even before a direct clash." Chu Miao whispered, her voice tight with anger.

"And planning to strike, probably once the flood recedes," Ye Xuan added grimly. "How bold of them. But it’s good that we know their plans. This way, we can protect our people better.

When the flood water recedes, let’s hurry with setting up a protection array around our community.

That way, as long as the people didn’t wander off, nobody could find them." Chu Miao said with her fists clenched.

Ye Xuan nodded. "Let’s copy everything before going back."

The two then took out a hard drive and a cable and connected the two devices together before copying everything in the tablet.

Within two minutes, everything had been copied. He placed the tablet back in its original place to make sure that the owner of the study wouldn’t notice anything amiss before locking the drawer again.

The two then teleported out of the office, reappearing on the rooftop of one of the submerged buildings.

The wind was strong, carrying the scent of salt and decay. Chu Miao assumed that the flood water must have mixed with sea water.

The corpses that had been dumped in the water contributed to the awful smell. Below them, the base continued its operations, unaware that its secrets had just been stolen.

"Alright, since we have gained something useful, let’s go back home. I think with the data Yang Leo has, he can make more communication devices." Ye Xuan said while looking at the horizon, even though all he could see was water and crumbling buildings.

"Okay then. We can go back and have lunch then. If not for needing to keep our visit a secret and avoid alerting the enemy, I really wanted to carry those expensive wines in that leader’s house." Chu Miao was still seething with anger over the luxurious life of the leader while the ordinary soldiers lived like beggars.

"Don’t be too upset about it. We’ll take action when the time is right. Also, it is good to let the soldiers experience some hardships.

Once we provide support to them, they will appreciate it more." Ye Xuan commented as a way of comfort to his girlfriend who was angered by the leader.
