CHAPTER 345: CHAPTER 345: SURVIVORS REGISTRATION

Zhu Feng who had been running around all night to collect supplies and even engaged in a battle with zombies was on the verge of collapse when he was done.

Luckily, his wife understood this and had warmed some water for him to take a bath. When he came out of the bathroom, there was a hot meal of rice and stew with mushrooms on the table.

This was considered a luxury meal in the apocalypse. It had been ages since he ate so well and was grateful to the people in Building H for accommodating him and sharing the resources they found.

After eating a full meal, Zhu Feng went to bed. His two companions were the same and also went to rest as soon as they were done eating.

They slept until midday when they woke up to find their building a little quiet. It turned out that the people from the military and others from the government had come to register survivors.

So many people had perished due to the apocalypse that only about twenty percent of the population was left and probably only ten would be left after a few more disasters.

For this reason, the government decided to do a census and register the surviving humans.

At the supermarket near the community, there were several desks set up to cater to different people. There was a place designated for registering all the survivors, another one for registering those who want to go and join the construction workforce of the safe base, and another one registering those willing to go on missions to look for survivors in different places in exchange for supplies.

The two first queues were long but the third one only had a few people, most of whom were just there to ask about the conditions.

Nobody really wanted to risk their lives for strangers even if the reward given was valuable supplies.

Zhu Feng’s wife was registering on behalf of their family and even though she had not discussed with her husband about going to the safe base to work in construction so that they could get priority when it came to housing allocation later.

The soldier registering didn’t ask questions because it wasn’t compulsory for people to join the construction team.

After the registration, Zhu Feng’s wife and the wives of the other two men went home together. Even though they had not interacted a lot, they understood their mutual bond of the supplies brought back by their husbands.

These days, a few supplies could turn people into their friends or family enemies depending on what happens.

In Zhu Feng’s case, he had gained two friends.

Back home when Zhu Feng woke up, he ate whatever was placed on the table before getting to work.

He knew that even if he did nothing, the supplies he brought back were going to cause a lot of envy and jealousy among their neighbors.

He was also apprehensive about the gang that was going to rob people tonight. What if they couldn’t steal anything from that group of people in Building H and came for him instead?

He had a family to protect. Thus, he searched the house and found a few electricity cables and old solar batteries and solar panels.

He immediately got to work and mounted the solar panels in the balcony then connected the solar batteries to charge them.

He also created a circuit with wires and connected them to the door and windows. As long as he switched the circuit on, anyone who touches that door or window would have current passing through their bodies thus discouraging any theft.

After he was done setting up this in his house, he went to help Old Jiang and Old Su to do the same. He just instructed them not to switch the circuit on unless necessary.

After doing all this, Zhu Feng went back home and found his wife back from the registration venue.

She had also come back with a bag of supplies that included two kilograms of rice, a packet of noodles, a kilo of sugar, one liter of oil, and two liters of purified drinking water.

It turned out that whoever went for the registration received a ration of supplies from the government.

This should be one way that the government used to encourage citizens to register themselves.

"Honey, come, let me show you something. See this switch? If someone with ulterior motives shows up at our door, don’t open it no matter what they say or how much they threaten you.

You have to understand that now is the apocalypse. It wasn’t the time when people used to threaten not to do anything if you did as they said and they would really leave.

At this moment, if someone threatens you and no matter how much they reassure you that they won’t do anything. The first thing they will do if you open that door is kill you and the children.

So, no matter what, do not open the door. Instead, switch this on. It connects to a battery powered by solar and would shock anyone who touches our door or window.

Don’t be afraid to shock them because if you hesitate, our children would be the first to die.

When Mrs. Zhu, who was still hesitating, heard that her children would die, she nodded vigorously.

She would never let anything happen to her children. She would kill anyone who was a threat to her children before they even thought of harming her family.

The same conversation happened in the three households in the same building who had gotten some decent supplies the night before.

Even though the women didn’t know why the men had become extra cautious, they wouldn’t complain about getting extra protection.

Moreover, the apocalypse had made people more vigilant than before. They also knew that their husbands wouldn’t be doing all this for nothing.

Something was definitely up. Thus, they all made the same decision of staying indoors and not leaving the house for a couple of days.

They had everything they needed at home anyway.
