Apocalypse: Zombie King is the Female Lead's Younger Sister
Chapter 130: Fighting the Mutated Animals
CHAPTER 130: CHAPTER 130: FIGHTING THE MUTATED ANIMALS
The ability users around exchanged glances. Darren approached Mr. Wells, squinting his eyes through the small opening in the window.
He took a sharp breath. There were more mutated animals this time, as if they had returned with a vengeance for their previous loss. Monkeys, squirrels, birds...
When he turned around, he met others’ questioning eyes. The sight of densely packed rows of critters–jumping monkeys, crawling squirrels, and hundreds of flying birds made him quite troubled.
If the number of the mutated animals was already so many, then previously they were lucky not running into their nest. They have seen only the tip of the iceberg.
For a split second, he suddenly thought of Cassias, the lazy guy. That guy always had a solution, and often gave him hints about it... unfortunately, he wasn’t with them.
"What do you see, Mr. Valez?" Arnold asked with a solemn face.
Seeing Darren’s troubled face. His eyes were narrowed and his eyebrows knitted together, he knew that the situation outside must be dangerous.
"The number should have been doubled." Darren frowned.
They were somewhat lucky that they had gone inside the residents’ houses. Otherwise, their safety was hard to guarantee, even if they hid in the car. Those monkeys were quite cunning. They might break the car’s windows.
"Maybe just stay inside for a while." Mr. Wells finally said. His hopes were dashed as soon as he saw their expressions.
The previous number of mutated animals were easier to handle, but this one was bigger. Anyway, it seemed that the base had somehow miscalculated the danger level and sent too few ability users...
There was even a thought that the base might have given up on them, but he discarded that thought as soon as it appeared.
Ability users were quite precious. They wouldn’t have sent people otherwise.
Mr. Wells had lived in this neighbourhood for as long as he could remember. When the apocalypse happened, he didn’t leave, just like many others in this area.
They had been neighbors to each other for so many years, and were as close as families. However, now that there was this problem of mutated animals, maybe it was best if they took refuge at the base.
There had been a lot of casualties, and they couldn’t afford more people losing their lives.
"Tomorrow morning, most likely they would have left." Mr. Wells went back to sit in his chair. He was already old, and the way he walked was no longer as steady.
He heaved a sigh of relief after he sat down, letting out the breath he didn’t know he was holding.
Zerra already saw the situation outside when she spread her senses. It was indeed very terrifying. A lot of mutated animals were coming for them.
She shifted her gaze to Darren. Just as she was about to open her mouth, the loud, frantic knocking at the door shook their hearts, followed by incessant screeching.
There was a horde of mutated animals outside, crowding around the house and looking for a way inside.
They might have marked their scent.
Mr. Wells’ face became increasingly grave. Time passed very slowly; minutes felt like hours. The more they wait, the louder the howling and screeches outside. Some noise came from the roof.
At some point, they could almost imagine the house crumbling because of the pressure. Mr. Wells rubbed his temples, growing more weary and terrified.
Obviously, this time the mutated animals’ rage was much more devastating than usual that Mr. Wells lost his composure.
Zerra’s scalp also went numb when she saw the sight outside through her senses. All the mutated animals climbed onto the roof, jumping around as if they wanted to make the houses crumble.
The mutated animals didn’t target other houses, mostly only the ones with them inside–the ability users on the mission.
"We are going to face them." Darren finally opened his mouth.
Others snapped their heads at him, eyes wide in shock. Some had reluctance in their eyes, doubt, and fear.
"I am sorry, Mr. Wells. They brought more force with them this time because of our recklessness," He added.
It was true. If they hadn’t rushed head-on to exterminate the first wave of this horde of mutated animals, the escaping ones wouldn’t have called others to take revenge.
They were unaware that those animals would come back to take revenge.
Darren didn’t miss the look in everyone’s eyes, and he silently took it in.
"For those who want to join in exterminating the mutated animals, come with me. You can stay if you don’t want to." With that, he took out his gun and clutched his longsword tightly, walking toward the door.
Zerra bit her lip.
She had been trying to spot any high-intelligence mutated animals, but she couldn’t spot even one. They were all low-level.
Darren headed toward the door. He stopped a few steps away. "Any of you who decided to stay, close the door quickly. Kill any mutated animals that try to get inside."
He continued walking until he arrived at the door. Unsurprisingly, Nyra was the first one to follow him.
Zerra didn’t hesitate; she followed. Laziel too, and surprisingly Arnold and his people. She raised her eyebrows at them. Were they going to take charge of closing the door just like Darren suggested?
Darren opened the door, jumping out quickly. He hadn’t expected too many would follow him, however...
Even Arnold and his people joined, killing the screeching monkeys that tried to get inside Mr. Wells’ house before slamming the door shut.
Only Meira remained inside.
Zerra quickly stabbed the mutated animals jumping at her, killing a few with one stab. She ran around the fighting people, stuffing explosives into them.
"Throw it at the dense mutated animals! Watch your surroundings first!" Darren shouted a warning.
Loud noise from the explosions reverberated, killing any mutated animals within the explosion range. The animals let out painful howls and screeches. Some didn’t even get the chance as they exploded into pieces.
Their killing rate increased in an instant, giving them hope.
The ability users cheered. The others who were staying at the houses near Mr. Wells also had joined the fray upon seeing their comrades’ victory.
They began collecting the crystal cores from the mutated animals’ carcasses. They had agreed to split it according to everyone’s contribution.
However, it seemed they had celebrated too soon. A long howl reverberated from the direction of the forest. The sound got increasingly closer...
A brown wolf appeared in front of them, followed by more and more wolves.
