CHAPTER 57: CHAPTER 57: FOG OF THE APOCALYPSE

"Scott, the two gentlemen and lady will stay at your place." Jake brought them to the small house after he helped Darren and others to settle in.

In contrast with the thin Jake, who resembled someone in his late thirties, Scott was still relatively young. He was still in his early twenties, yet his exhausted face made him look older than his actual age.

"We have two more rooms here." Scott smiled at them. "Let’s go inside."

Jake left them after he made sure that there were exactly two rooms available for them.

Oddly enough, the situation became a little awkward as soon as he was gone.

"I hope that you don’t mind with this room, Miss Zerra." Scott opened a room, and helped her to carry her backpack inside. They had introduced themselves to him earlier.

"Sorry for troubling you," she muttered.

He just waved his hand off. "It’s no trouble at all. I have been living alone ever since the world turned so strange..."

There was a flash of emotion in his eyes. Zerra fell silent. She guessed that there was a tragic story behind that emotion. Most likely, Scott had lost some of his family members.

"It was previously my mother’s room." He swept his gaze across the room with an inscrutable expression. Then, he let out a breath. "Anyway, it’s best not to talk about such a thing. You must have been tired, Miss Zerra. I wish you a fulfilling rest."

He handed her the key to the room before leaving.

She gazed at the key in her hand thoughtfully, feeling strange in her heart. After Scott mentioned his mother, he hurriedly left while rubbing his face, as if he didn’t want her to see his fragile state.

Undoubtedly, this rural residential area was strange, but they will have the time to find out...

Zerra yawned tiredly. She pulled the crossbar lock and locked the door from inside for extra security. Her gaze trained on the window outside, unsettled.

The fog has begun. It was considered the second round of the apocalypse. As soon as the fog dissipated, there would be more people who would awaken their power. Likewise, the danger increased.

Zombies wouldn’t be killed so easily anymore, and the survival of humanity truly entered its genuine phase. Things also would get harder for ordinary people.

Zerra frowned, and she looked at the door as though her gaze could penetrate the walls. Cassias had already known it would happen beforehand, right?

That explained why he slaughtered so many zombies for their crystal cores. She pondered a lot of things, but because she was too exhausted, she soon drifted off to sleep.

She woke up when she heard someone knocking on the door. From how relentless the person who did it was, she could already tell that the culprit was Laziel.

"Wake up, munchkin, stop sleeping like a pig!" Laziel called out to her. Then, another round of door knocking started.

Zerra’s patience was running thin. She stood up, walked toward the door, unlocked it, and opened the door.

Laziel opened his mouth. "Why do you take so lo–"

She smacked him with a pillow. Ignoring the stunned Laziel, she walked past him and headed to the bathroom. The bedroom wasn’t big, so it didn’t include a bathroom inside.

When she came out again, Laziel dragged her toward the living room. There was already Cassias there. She swept her gaze to him, who was drinking a glass of water, and withdrew her gaze.

"So, what do you all think?" Laziel asked after he dragged Zerra to sit.

Her mouth twitched. She subconsciously used her senses to find whether Scott was nearby.

He wasn’t at the house. Just as she was about to spread her senses further, she was blocked. No matter how much spiritual energy she channeled into her senses, the thickening fog outside served as a blockade.

"Do you think this place is strange?" Laziel asked again when he received no response. His gaze flitted alternately between Zerra and Cassias.

"Don’t jinx it." Zerra rolled her eyes.

"I am not." Laziel grunted. "I am just being vigilant."

Zerra took a glass from the tray on the table and turned to Laziel. "Water."

Laziel shot her a triumphant smile. He didn’t make it difficult for her like he usually did. After he filled the glass in her hand, he muttered arrogantly, "Look, you also don’t dare to drink the water that the owner provided."

She pursed her lips and snorted, not answering him. This annoying mouth of her elder brother would land him in trouble someday.

He only awakened water ability; unlike Cassias, who possessed mental power ability. Laziel couldn’t sense whether people were nearby or not.

"What’s with that look? Scared?" Laziel made fun of her.

Cassias turned his gaze toward her the moment he heard Laziel’s words. "He is not in the house."

"How do you know?" Zerra raised her eyebrows.

"He went out half an hour earlier. It’s unknown what he is doing outside," Cassias answered her, his face full of contemplation.

Since Cassias also couldn’t determine what Scott was doing outside, it meant that the fog also blocked his mental power ability.

The fog showed no sign of lessening at all since last night. If anything, the biting chill even began to penetrate the bones.

"What are you looking at?" Laziel asked and followed her line of sight. He also frowned with worry when he saw the fog. "What’s with this fog? It’s not a sign of disaster, is it?"

Zerra mentally answered: well, the fog is a disaster itself...

"We might have to stay here longer." Cassias told them. "The fog doesn’t look like it will go away soon."

Laziel scrunched his face, troubled. Zerra jolted, and she watched as Laziel opened his mouth again. Her hand was tempted to stuff it with something in fear he might say something recklessly again.

"Do we have enough supplies for the next few days?" He asked.

She inwardly heaved a sigh of relief. Luckily, he didn’t mention their space power or supplies in the trucks, although she was sure some people were already suspicious about the things inside.

At the same time, just as she guessed, Scott had returned inside. He walked into the living room with a strange grin.

"You don’t need to worry about food," He said while holding his butcher knife and drenched in blood.
