CHAPTER 28: ASKING ABOUT THE BIRTH PLACE OF BEAST TAMERS

"I am really curious."

Selena sat opposite Ray, her legs crossed.

The way she looked at him was like someone studying an interesting painting that drew them in. Clearly, she was curious about him, wanted to understand him, and was fascinated by his uniqueness.

"How did you get so many demonized wolves’ corpses and the interspatial ring?"

Ray could understand her curiosity.

If someone you saw as merely a hunter—a being better than a commoner but not as skilled as a beast tamer—managed to tackle challenges that entire parties of iron-rank beast tamers didn’t dare face, they would exceed your expectations, and your curiosity about them would naturally be piqued.

Selena was experiencing the same thing.

"I hunted," Ray replied to Selena honestly, but she thought he was being secretive.

However, by asking a sensitive question, she had already shown a touch of discourtesy, so she didn’t let her curiosity get the best of her again, maintaining a fake understanding smile on her face.

"Where’s Butler Jain? Why don’t I see him?" Ray asked, wanting to know what had become of the servant who overstepped his place and tried to control his master’s life.

"I followed your advice and dismissed him."

Selena had always found Butler Jain’s presence disturbing.

He was far too obsessed with her.

But he was the knight assigned to her by her family, so she had kept him around.

Ray’s warning, however, acted as a wake-up call that pushed her to take actions she should have taken long ago.

"You did a good thing," Ray said, giving her a thumbs up.

Selena smiled sweetly, finding his little gesture unexpectedly adorable.

"By the way, about that favor I mentioned last time—any news?"

Ray’s beast taming seal could grow endlessly, which meant he would never stop needing other people’s seals to feed it. The only difference now was that he was no longer desperate enough to risk his life for one.

Selena folded her hands neatly on the table, her expression calm yet apologetic as she spoke. "I’ve spread the word around town, but no one’s stepped forward yet."

"I can afford to wait," Ray said.

"Here’s something else I’m curious about. Do you know much about the Birthplace of Beast Tamers? If so, could you please tell me what you know?"

He spoke with the eagerness of someone starved for answers, his expression unconsciously mirroring that of a child seeing the world for the first time.

Selena blinked.

For a strange moment, it felt as though a golden retriever with big, hopeful eyes was staring at her, waiting for a treat.

*What a ridiculous comparison.*

Her cheeks warmed at the silly thought, and she quickly scolded herself for comparing a man to a dog.

She shook her head to banish the silly thought from her mind, then cleared her throat before speaking with dignity and pride befitting a woman of her status.

"I hail from a clan of pure-blooded nobles. My understanding of the Birthplace of Beast Tamers runs deeper than most. And since you’ve asked so nicely, I won’t refuse. I’ll tell you what I know."

Gratitude welled up in Ray’s chest.

"Thank you," he said sincerely.

Selena said, "No problem."

"Now let me tell you what I know."

"First of all, its true name is the Tower of Enlightenment."

"According to historical records, its entrances appeared all over the earth during the Dark Age. Those who enter the tower face trials, and if they overcome them, they are rewarded handsomely."

"Whether it be knowledge, rare items, power, wealth, beauty, or even an extended lifespan, the tower has everything to offer. You simply need to be strong enough to seize it."

"It’s widely believed the tower came into existence to help humans resist the demonic creatures that invaded our lands. That belief holds weight because of one fact: only humans can pass through the passages connecting the tower to our world. Demonic creatures are unable to enter."

"But here’s the truth few outside noble circles know. The Tower’s entrances exist in countless planets, some of which are facing the same trouble as us."

In the next half an hour, Selena said a lot, helping Ray gain crucial insight about the tower.

Selena was only able to share more on this topic because she wasn’t preoccupied with work.

Her store was crowded today, but the servants she had hired were well-trained. They knew how to deal with every type of customer without arousing dissatisfaction or bothering her.

Even if a Karen came to cause trouble for no particular reason, they would be able to diffuse the situation without needing her intervention!

"Thank you. Thanks to you a lot of my confusion have cleared up," Ray now regarded the birth place of beast tamers as a very crucial place to explore.

Before leaving, Selena gave him several books for free.

The titles were as follow.

1: Tale of the Dark Age

2: History of the Leon Kingdom

3: Beast Encyclopedia

4: A Treatise on Magic Herbs and Demonic Creatures

He went home and began reading them.

His home was located on the outskirts of town, a wide and pleasant place with multiple rooms and a courtyard.

The only thing it lacked was proper maintenance.

He planned to hire some servants to take care of it, as he didn’t want to waste his time doing menial work.

"All four books have interesting knowledge to share. I don’t think you can get them easily even if you are a beast tamer. Selena... She had truly done me a heavy handed favour."

Only after Ray finished reading them and gained a deeper understanding of the changes Earth had gone through since he was killed by the masked cultist in his previous life, did he truly realize the value of Selena’s gift, and he felt more indebted to her.

"I would’ve to repay her if there’s ever an opportunity."

Ray’s nature was simple, almost frighteningly so.

He believed in returning cruelty with cruelty. An eye for an eye may leave the whole world blind, but at least it ensured he would gain justice for himself.

At the same time, he believed in returning kindness with kindness. Since Selena had done him a favor, he resolved that if the opportunity ever came, he would make sure to repay her in full!
