CHAPTER 37: THE INVIGILATOR’S TERRIFYING POWERS!

"Come out, Fresh River Lord," Kaki commanded.

A ray of pale blue light burst from his forehead and struck the ground. In an instant, it transformed into a fishman no larger than a baby.

The fishman had an oversized head, giving it a comical yet oddly endearing appearance.

Its belly was smooth and white. The rest of its body was blue and covered in scales.

Its short limbs ended in webbed fingers tipped with small, sharp claws that looked fit for both swimming and climbing.

Two fin-like protrusions extended from the sides of its oversized head, while a sleek tail extended from its back.

Its eyes were its most striking feature. Its glossy and marble-like eyes were big, round, and expressive.

This was the Fresh River Lord, a Bronze Rank Spirit-type demonic creature.

Despite its playful, childlike appearance, its powers were profound. It possessed the rare ability to accurately predict things that had happened.

"Why have you summoned me, Master? Is it investigation time?" It asked.

Kaki gave a steady nod.

"Finally, something fun to do! Woohoo!" The Fresh River Lord’s glossy black eyes gleamed with excitement, its tail flicking back and forth as its childlike voice bubbled with glee.

"Is Tristan D. Grey, a grand knight of White Sparrow, and his team dead?" Kaki questioned.

"Yes!" the Fresh River Lord answered loudly, blue rays flashing in its eyes.

Kaki posed another question.

"What killed them?"

The Fresh River Lord closed its eyes, divining about the fate of the Town’s Guards killed by Ray.

Visions flashed in its mind.

It saw Tristan being chopped apart.

It also saw a ray of white flashing past him before he was chopped apart.

It managed to make out what it was before its eyes and head hurt so much that it had to stop divining about their fate.

"Tristan was cleaved apart by a... flying sword," the Fresh River Lord said, tears welling in its large black eyes, its pitiful expression tugging at the heart.

Kaki reached out, wiped its tears, and patted its head gently before continuing with simpler questions.

Answering such questions wouldn’t strain it severely.

"What about Kane White of the White Sparrow Town? Is he alive?"

The Fresh River Lord crossed its tiny arms, its glossy eyes flashing red as it divined about Kane’s fate.

"Negative."

Kaki turned toward Nisha and Ashclaw and reported the results of his investigation.

"Kane and the town’s guards fought fiercely. Tristan’s team was caught in friendly fire and annihilated. After that, Kane slew Tristan, though at the cost of his own life. That means Kane wasn’t as weak as you assumed, Ashclaw. He was either already a Bronze Rank Tamer or possessed a trump card strong enough to deal with one."

Both Nisha and Ashclaw silently accepted this as the truth.

Ashclaw broke the silence. "Lord Invigilator, can you please check if Ray is alive?"

Kaki inclined his head slightly, his eyes sharp.

"I don’t mind doing you this favor."

Kaki had received a lot of benefits from Ashclaw since he was assigned to the White Sparrow Town by the investigation Bureau.

Now that the time to cough some of it back has come, he didn’t hesitate to fulfill Ashclaw’s request.

"What’s his full name and birthplace? For my Fresh River Lord to accurately divine a person’s fate, it needs these things. If it only use his name, it might end up divining about someone else with the same name, and who knows how many people in this world are named Ray," Kaki explained.

"It’s Ray Reyja Rahas of the White Sparrow Town," Ashclaw answered promptly.

Kaki turned to his tamed creature.

"Fresh River Lord, please divine if he is alive or dead."

The Fresh River Lord’s eyes turned red for a moment as it divined Ray Reyja Rahas’s fate.

"He is dead," it replied simply.

Its prediction was 100% accurate.

Ray Reyja Rahas had, in truth, perished days ago. Moments before the beast tamer trial held in White Sparrow this year started, he had succumbed to the poison that had been secretly administered to him under Ashclaw’s orders.

The person who now walked the world in his place was someone else entirely.

Ray Raya Rengar & Ray Reyja Rahas...

... They were two different beings.

Since the Fresh River Lord had been asked specifically about Ray Reyja Rahas, it naturally revealed the fate of that man alone.

"You did a very good job today! Here, have this," Kaki handed over a bundle of demonic cores to the Fresh River Lord.

Kaki was an orphan with no special background.

He had to sell himself into slavery just to survive when he was a young child.

A few years ago, he managed to buy back his freedom by using almost all of the wealth he had accumulated while working as a slave for his former master.

After buying back his freedom, he participated in the beast tamer trial to try out his luck and got lucky, awakening as a beast tamer.

In three short years, he managed to get inside the investigation bureau and become a low rank invigilator.

His rapid success was all thanks to his tamed creature.

Its ability made it invaluable to Kaki, who relied on it as the cornerstone of his investigative work.

Without the Fresh River Lord, he wouldn’t have succeeded in advancing his career as fast as he did and enjoy the privileges that came with that. So, he treated it very good like his own flesh and blood.

Each time it would help him solve a case, he would reward it with its favourite treat.

Weee!

To the Fresh River Lord, demonic cores were as irresistible as candies to a child. Its eyes sparkled with delight, squealing happily, as it was rewarded with its favourite snack. It snatched the cores from Kaki’s hand before tossing them into its mouth.

Crack! Crack!

The small, sharp crunches of demonic cores breaking between its teeth echoed out as it chewed with its mouth closed.

Even high temperature flames couldn’t melt them, but they shattered like fragile glass as it bit them.

Its teeth were far sharper than a well honed blade!

"Is the investigation over?" The Fresh River Lord asked after it finished eating the cores it had been given.

Kaki gave a single firm nod.

In the next moment, the Fresh River Lord, who felt tired and wanted to rest, dissolved into a ray of pale blue light, shooting back into Kaki’s forehead and settling quietly within his Niwan Palace.
