CHAPTER 79: DARIO

Evelyn was silent, but she eventually relented, letting out a deep breath and wrapping her arms around Amber.

This might be good for her.

Every part of the deal she had with Zayne would be ending tomorrow. The last thing she really needed was sitting cooped up and curled under a duvet, bawling her eyes out and regretting things she could’ve done differently.

Whatever she had with him was over, and there was no coming from it.

————

Zayne rushed down from his car, his steps hurried as he rushed into the building.

He had been restless throughout at work and no matter how hard he tried to swallow it down, he couldn’t and had to eventually leave work.

Getting into the foyer, he was met by Agatha who held a packaged document.

"Sir?—"

"What is that?" he questioned.

She blinked and slowly approached him to hand the document over. "It was delivered to her a few minutes ago. The label on it says that it’s for you."

Zayne snatched it from her. He tore it open, taking out the papers and as he read through the content of it, his eyes began to flicker, a lump growing in his throat. At the very end of the paper, there was already a signature, one that belonged to Evelyn.

Wait, why was it already signed before being sent to—

Zayne snapped his gaze over to the second floor of his manor. "Are you fucking kidding me?"

Somehow he felt he already knew what was happening.

"Where is she?"

"Sir?" Agatha blinked.

"Where is she? Evelyn?"

She shook her head. "I don’t know, sir. I haven’t seen her since this morning. The last time I saw her was last night."

Zayne dashed off, towards the stairs, tossing the papers aside and not even bothering to use the elevator.

"Evelyn!"

No response.

"Evelyn!"

No response.

He stormed into the room and shoved the door open, but it was empty, with no sign of anyone in it. Even her scent was barely still noticeable.

Zayne’s throat bounced as he swallowed.

It couldn’t be. She couldn’t have really left him without a word.

He stalked into the room, towards the closet. And just as he’d expected, her clothes and everything were gone.

Evelyn was gone. She’d left him. Completely left him.

Fuck!

Fuck!

Fuck!

Grabbing his phone, he quickly dialed her number, but when it went through, no one answered. And the next time he tried, her phone was completely turned off as if she didn’t want to answer his call.

What the hell?

Was she planning to never talk to him again? Never seen him again? How could she just leave like that? They didn’t even get to talk.

Well then, he’ll just have to find her.

While he said he wouldn’t force her to marry him, Evelyn sure as hell wasn’t leaving him. He never said she could.

Turning around, Zayne left the room, rushing his way downstairs. As he made his way over to his car, he called Alessio.

[Zayne, I’m in a meeting. What are you calling me for—]

"I need to see you right now."

[Huh? I just told you that I’m in a—]

"I need to see you right now. Something is wrong, really wrong. So please, meet me at your place."

[Okay, but Dario is there though]

"Why is he at your place?"

[Because we have plans together later]

"Thirty minutes Alessio. I want to see you in thirty minutes, please. This is very important."

[Alright, alright, I’ll be there]

Hanging up, he got into his car, fixed his seatbelt, and drove off. Amidst the ride, he went on to dial someone else.

"Hello. Caesar."

[Zayne?]

"It’s me, yeah. Are you busy?"

[Uh...]

He could hear Adeline’s voice in the background.

["You’re sleeping on the couch. Don’t even dare come close to me!"

’But I said sorry...’

"I don’t care about your sorry"]

Zayne blinked. What the heck...could they be arguing about?

The sound of Caesar clearing his throat blared into the phone and he awkwardly chuckled.

"Is everything...okay?" Zayne asked.

[Yeah. I may have messed up a little bit. So what did you want?]

"I was asking if I could see you. This is important and I need to talk to you."

[Alright. I’ll be over. Where though?]

"Alessio’s place."

[It won’t take longer than an hour, will it? My wife will kill me. She’s extra annoyed today. And pregnant...]

Zayne almost wanted to cackle. It was funny how the man wasn’t afraid of anyone else but his wife.

"Yes, it won’t take more than an hour."

[Good, I’ll see you th—]

["CAESAR! Get over here! And I’m not joking with you!"]

Zayne shifted the phone far from his ear, amused.

[Okay, I’ve got to go, Zayne]

The call ended.

Having arrived at his destination, he steered the car over, pulling off the road to park in front of Alessio’s Manor.

He stepped down and approached the entrance where the security bowed to him. "Afternoon, Mr. Mancini."

Zayne nodded, making his way inside. He steered to the living room where he proceeded to sit on the sofa. And while he waited for Alessio, he kept trying to dial Evelyn and reach her.

He wasn’t even sure where to start looking first, because he had no idea where she could’ve gone.

Home? He doubted it and it would be a waste of time.

He needs to have Alessio track her location. He had to find—

"What are you doing here?"

Lifting his head, he was met with Dario, who’d paused at the sight. He looked away from him.

Dario frowned.

"Zayne?"

"Leave me alone, Dario. Please," Zayne muttered, annoyed. The more time beat by, the more paranoid he grew.

He never felt so much bile rise to his throat as it was doing in his very moment.

What if she were leaving the country? Though he doubted it. Evelyn couldn’t just leave like that.

But didn’t she leave his house out of the blue? Without saying a word to him. Was that why she’d gotten into bed with him last night?
