CHAPTER 84: CHAPTER 84 - BETRAYAL

They descended the narrow path between two mountain peaks, moving farther from the ledge as they searched for their fifth snow panther.

No one spoke, each focused on their surroundings.

Reaching a somewhat flat area again, Logan detected a large mana signature in the distance.

"Hold," he said quietly.

A snow panther was lying in wait behind the narrow path, planning to ambush anything that went through there.

"Fifth one," Livia muttered, glancing at Logan, then at Derek, who stood several feet behind them both.

"We can’t surround it this time," Logan said quietly, looking at the mountain peaks on both sides.

Livia gave a small nod, thinking about what to do next.

Just as she was about to speak, a soft splash sounded behind them.

A thick, mana-rich smell hit Logan’s nose.

He turned and touched his back, feeling something wet soaking into his combat suit.

Livia beside him flinched. "What—"

Then it hit them.

The scent spread through the air, spreading incredibly fast through the entire narrow passage.

A chill ran through Logan’s spine as he locked eyes with Derek, who stood there smirking with an empty vial in hand.

Derek took a few steps back, letting the remaining vial shatter on the ground. The remaining green liquid melted the snow where it spilled.

Livia also turned around, her eyes wide. "What did you just—"

Behind them, a loud roar echoed through the passage.

Then another, closer this time.

Logan spun around, a look of horror appearing on his face as he saw two panthers enter the passage with his mana sight.

Hearing another roar, he looked up, finding another panther up on one of the mountain peaks.

"Shit," Livia breathed, already drawing her rapier.

The panther jumped down from above them, landing behind them.

They were completely surrounded.

Distant roars echoed through the passage, causing Logan’s expression to darken from rage and disbelief.

"Derek!" he shouted.

But when he looked behind him again, the pass was empty outside of one large snow panther.

Derek was gone.

"I knew it," Logan cursed, drawing his glaive. "That fucker."

He never expected him to have the balls to act, especially with the recording device from the university floating above them.

Meanwhile, Livia’s eyes darted between the panthers on both sides.

"We can’t stay here," she muttered, gripping her rapier tighter.

Logan stepped closer to her as the panthers closed in. Another snow panther emerged from the mist, charging to reinforce the two behind them.

"We can’t fight them all at once," he said, concentrating as he activated his basic Flaming Body technique. "And more are coming here every second."

Livia glanced at the one panther behind them before deciding.

"We need to break through that one. And fast," she said. "No matter the cost, if we can run in that direction we might make it out."

Logan followed her gaze, glancing at the lone panther behind them.

"If we can get past it, the terrain opens up slightly despite the ledges."

Logan hesitated for a second. "And the others behind us?"

"They’ll follow us. But we have to move now before more of them come here."

Livia turned to Logan, her eyes determined.

"We’re going to take a hit to our body armor. Maybe worse. But we can’t die here."

Logan gave a small nod and channeled large amounts of mana into his body until his skin glowed orange and his veins lit up.

"I’ll go first," Logan said, his body radiating a temperature he’d never reached before.

"No wait," Livia said, conjuring a large light ball inside her palm. "I’ll blind it.’’

’’When it stumbles, we go."

A roar behind them forced them into motion.

Livia raised her hand, releasing a dazzling light beam toward the lone panther.

At the same time, Logan dashed forward, his body reaching speeds he’d never reached before.

The snow under his feet melted with each step.

Livia sprinted after him, struggling to keep up despite her Silver-tier physique.

The light beam hit the snow panther head-on as it lunged at them, causing it to stumble back.

"Now!" Livia shouted, dashing past the creature’s left side.

As the panther regained its vision, it saw Logan passing on its right side.

Roaring wildly, it smashed one of its paws down toward Logan.

Logan glanced sideways and kicked off the mountainside, jumping over the paw and landing behind the beast before leaping away with all his strength.

He caught up to Livia again, maintaining the same pace as her as they ran toward the narrow ledge area they’d been before.

Behind them, the panthers roared in fury, running after them like crazed animals.

Neither of them had time to look back, fully concentrated on following their path back.

"How the hell do we get rid of them?" Logan shouted, realizing he wouldn’t last long with his advanced Flaming Body technique on.

"I don’t know!" Livia called back, her eyes fixed ahead. "They are attracted to our smell or something!"

Logan’s eyes widened.

Their combat suits were soaked in the mana-rich scent.

"It’s fucking bait," he muttered. "That bastard soaked us in it."

This entire time, Derek had been playing it calm, handing him cores whenever he could to show trust while also keeping his original personality to not arouse suspicion.

Up ahead, he saw the end of the narrow path.

Before he could feel happy, he heard another growl.

Logan looked up to see another panther racing alongside them on the ridge.

"Above us on our right!" Logan shouted to Livia.

"Got it," Livia growled, ripping her veil that’d been hit by the liquid off.

She tossed the veil behind her, hoping it would attract the panther’s attention away.

Unfortunately, the panther above them wasn’t interested in the smell since the majority of it still covered their combat suits.

Livia cursed loudly, her eyes fixed ahead again.

"Turn right before the ledge!" she urged Logan, seeing the ledge to the snow panther’s breeding grounds approaching.

That’s when it happened.

The snow panther that had been following them from above jumped down with full force as they turned to the right.

It jumped down with its claws stretched forward and its mouth wide open.

Twisting midair from the poor jump, it still managed to clamp its jaws around Logan’s torso, while one claw caught Livia and dragged her along.

They all tumbled through the snow towards the ledge, the crazed panther clinging to them as they struck back with blow after blow.

"It’s fucking crazy!" Logan shouted, struggling to get out of its teeth but holding on thanks to his skin suit.

The panther completely ignored the pain, crazed by the smell as it rolled toward the ledge.

With its full momentum, it flew off the edge with them.

"Fuck!" Livia shouted, stabbing her rapier deep inside its paw as she looked at the several hundred feet they were falling.

Logan looked down as well, horror filling his eyes when he realized they were falling toward the frozen lake.
