CHAPTER 569: CHAPTER 277: I DON’T BELIEVE IN EVIE LARKIN

"How about it? Want to bet?"

Nolan gritted his teeth: "Don’t you regret it."

"It should be you who shouldn’t regret," he said with a devilish smirk, walking aside to call Jane Quinlan on his phone.

The call connected quickly.

"How is it?"

"They’re still resuscitating her; I don’t know the details.

All I heard from Nolan was that she was unconscious when she was brought in."

Jane expressed her concern, "Miss Larkin isn’t going to die, right?"

"I think there’s hardly any chance of that happening."

Jane didn’t know why he was so certain.

But what if something really did happen to her?

"Kay Forrest, I am serious when I tell you, this is no joke.

We cannot only consider the positive aspects, so wherever you are, don’t be careless.

If something really happens to Miss Larkin, at least you won’t regret it."

Kay knew Jane was probably a bit scared tonight.

He assured, "Ok, stop worrying; believe me, everything is fine here, you should rest."

Jane wanted to say more, but felt that she shouldn’t intervene too much in such a situation.

This was an issue between Kay Forrest and Evie Larkin; better let them handle it themselves.

Now, what she could do was to fully trust him.

After hanging up, Kay walked up to Nolan: "I’m going to rest at the hotel across the hospital; if you need me after the surgery is done, give me a call."

Before Nolan could reply, Kay had already turned and left.

Nolan watched his departing figure.

This man, so wholeheartedly generous to those he loves, and yet so chillingly indifferent to others.

Evie is foolish to utterly and hopelessly love this man who isn’t meant for her.

Once in the hotel, Kay couldn’t sleep.

It wasn’t because Evie was still in resuscitation but because of an unfamiliarity.

Ever since he’d been with Jane, he had grown accustomed to sleeping while holding her soft body.

Now that she wasn’t by his side, he always felt like something was missing.

Barely having fallen asleep, his phone rang.

He sat up irritatedly, almost throwing the phone.

Upon answering, Nolan’s voice came through: "Evie’s surgery is over; she has passed the critical phase and has now been moved to a hospital room for rest.

In the VIP ward; come on over."

"If she’s fine, why should I go? Does one patient need two people up all night watching over her?

You stay with her; I’m going back."

Kay decisively hung up, got out of bed, dressed, and went home.

Nolan gritted his teeth at the hospital room door, thinking—Kay really is...

He sighed deeply before turning and pushing the door open to go inside.

Evie’s weak eyes looked at him, seemingly expecting something.

Nolan stepped forward and gave her a faint smile: "Kay Forrest just knew you were fine and went back first."

"Is that so." Her voice was feeble, also tinged with a hint of disappointment.

"He probably didn’t want to see me."

Nolan sat next to the bed: "You just woke up. Try to sleep a little more."

Evie’s eyes moistened as she closed them: "Nolan, you can go back too."

"I’ll stay with you."

"Don’t worry, I’ve been close to death once; I won’t do anything foolish anymore.

Anyway... whether I live or die doesn’t matter to anybody."

Nolan softly held her hand: "Kay was indeed here just now.

But I saw he seemed very tired, so I had him go rest at the hotel.

Plus, there are people who care about whether you live or die.

If something had happened to you, I would be upset.

Because you are my dearest friend."

Hearing this, Evie opened her eyes and looked at him: "Thank you, Nolan."

Nolan pursed his lips in a small smile: "Alright, don’t talk now. Rest for a while; I’ll watch over you."

Kay came back home in the middle of the night, and Jane had already fallen asleep.

He tiptoed into the room, undressed, and got into bed.

When he wrapped his arms around her waist, Jane reflexively struggled and bumped into him, shouting, "Who is it?"

"It’s me, it’s me."

Hearing his voice, Jane sighed in relief: "Why are you back already?"

"Evie’s okay; she has been resuscitated. Nolan is there with her now."

Jane turned on the bedside lamp: "You must be exhausted."

"Yeah, indeed. It’s really freezing outside.

Quick, hold me, and let’s warm up," he said.

He lay down holding Jane close.

"Did she try to commit suicide because of the rumors?"

"Who knows, I didn’t ask.

I’m really tired now, let’s sleep, we can talk about the rest tomorrow."

"Mhm," she burrowed into his arms, and the two of them snuggled up to each other.

Kay Forrest quickly fell asleep while hugging her.

The next morning, Jane Quinlan got up early to make breakfast.

She even went to the market early to buy black chicken and simmered it for over two hours.

Kay was woken up by the aroma of the chicken soup.

He came to the kitchen door, groggy, and saw her bustling around with an apron on.

He stepped forward and embraced her.

"You’re awake."

"Baby, why are you up so early.

Mmm, what smells so good."

Jane Quinlan turned to look at him with a smile: "I was thinking, Miss Larkin went through a lot last night.

She’s an orphan, so I figured no one would bring her nourishing soup, so..."

"Oh? Chicken soup, eh." Kay let go of her and lifted the pot lid to smell: "It’s so fragrant, here, serve me a bowl, I went to bed too late last night, need to replenish a bit."

Jane Quinlan pouted: "Oh dear, look at that expression, I’m doing all this for you."

"Am I sending chicken soup to Evie Larkin?

Silly girl, even if there’s nothing wrong, it could lead to issues.

This soup, you can deliver it, but I can’t, it’s called avoiding suspicion."

"I’ve told you, I trust you."

"I trust myself too, but I don’t trust Evie Larkin."

He said while rubbing her head, "I’m going to wash up, and I’ll come out to have the soup in a bit."

Because of Kay’s caution, Jane felt warmth in her heart.

But she has a sharp tongue and a soft heart.

The soup was already made, might as well send it over in her name.

Jane served Kay a bowl; she very much respected his wife’s culinary skills.

After breakfast, Kay took her along to the hospital.

Jane wanted to go up and deliver the soup, she asked which ward it was in.

Kay honestly didn’t know: "You can call Nolan to ask."

"You don’t know?"

"I forgot."

Jane got out of the car, calling Nolan as she headed upstairs.

Nolan’s voice sounded tired: "Hello."

"Director Moore, which floor is Miss Larkin on?"

"VIP ward, bed 2, what’s up?"

"Nothing, I’ve brought some food for Miss Larkin."

After saying that, she hung up the phone.

She had stayed in this hospital’s VIP ward before, so she knew where it was.

After going upstairs, Jane took a deep breath before knocking on the door.

"Come in."

The voice was Dylan Moore’s.

While holding the thermal container, as Jane entered, Nolan’s gaze turned to focus on the box in her hands.

Evie Larkin’s gaze, however, passed over Jane and looked behind her.

Seeing that there was no one behind her, Evie appeared somewhat disappointed.

"Miss Larkin, how are you feeling?"

Evie nodded: "Pretty good."

"I went out this morning to buy a black chicken and made you some nourishing soup."

She walked to the table and poured a bowl of the soup, leaving the rest with Nolan.

"Director Moore, you stayed up all night too, I’ve prepared a bowl for you as well, to replenish."

Nolan was taken aback, not expecting her to do this.

They had just argued the night before.

"Thank you."

Jane pursed her lips.

Nolan fed Evie first, and after tasting it, Evie said gratefully: "The taste is really good, Miss Quinlan, you’re so capable, thank you for thinking of me at this time."

"It’s nothing, I’m glad you like it." She glanced at Evie’s wrist but said nothing.

The room went a bit quiet, Evie guiltily said: "Miss Quinlan, about yesterday, I’m truly sorry, I didn’t expect that the past would still be mentioned in gossip."

Jane smiled faintly: "Miss Larkin, don’t say that.

I know, everyone has been talking behind your back about you and Kay, and you must be the one who is suffering the most.

And besides, the affair with Kay happened so long ago, I won’t be angry with you.

Nothing is more important than your own life, please never do something foolish again.

To give up your own life over others’ idle gossip, that’s really foolish."

Evie nodded: "I won’t do it again," she hesitated for a moment then asked: "Miss Quinlan, I hope you don’t find this rude, but Kay... didn’t come?"
