Bizarre Realm
Chapter 69 - 13: Dimensional Jump
CHAPTER 69: CHAPTER 13: DIMENSIONAL JUMP
A week’s time passed quickly.
Shawn found that his work seemed to be somewhat different from that of other investigators.
Recently, there have been some supernatural events in Dorne City, but none of them were extremely serious or bizarre incidents.
Take the recent supernatural event investigated by Hank as an example. At Caesar University, a group of sophomores, driven by a bizarre whim, played spirit communication games during their night gatherings. Normally, these things are harmless. The real world is isolated from the Bizarre Realm and lacks the corresponding mystical knowledge, so the spirit summoning ceremony usually doesn’t take effect.
However, they actually stole Professor Frank’s notes. Frank is a history professor at Caesar University. Driven by bold curiosity, they followed the notes and used an old antique as a ritual medium, and astonishingly, they really managed to half-complete the ceremony, opening a slight gap to the Spirit Realm.
The end result was one dead, one insane, two mentally deranged, and the last one suffering from nightmares and hallucinations every day.
This matter was assigned to Hank for handling by the headquarters. Shawn originally wanted to help, but the higher-ups declined his application under the excuse that he needed recuperation.
Thus, Shawn became the most leisurely among the investigators again.
"Hank is investigating the spirit communication event; Keville is investigating the missing archaeologist event; Qin is investigating the sewer man-eating rat event."
"They didn’t let me get involved in anything."
"How am I supposed to level up like this?"
Shawn drew the curtains, got up, and brushed his teeth. He is currently very idle, going to the headquarters every morning to report, checking past records of investigators, or browsing mystical knowledge on bizarre creatures in the library. He would have a good lunch at the canteen, take a wander around the streets for digestion, and then hang around the University City area without any hurry, spending afternoons up to 5:30 pm in the library.
The evenings are quite free. Occasionally, he goes for a drink with Hank and William or strolls around the Wharf District in the wind.
He basically goes to bed around ten o’clock, digesting the knowledge from reading magic memory.
"This life is more leisurely than retirement."
Shawn currently doesn’t feel any malice directed towards him. Through observation over the past few days, it seems that the higher-ups of the Night Watchers are treating his Rationality Value as a kind of rare strategic resource to protect, not wanting Shawn to expend too much rationality on trivial supernatural events.
Put simply, unimportant bizarre events are left for other investigators to handle, while Shawn maintains a good mental state, ready to step in when a major crisis event occurs.
This might also have something to do with his ability to activate the No. 1 Sealed Object.
Since Shawn experienced ’auditory hallucinations’ some time ago, Benjamin presumably reported to the higher-ups of the Night Watchers, who are now focusing on Shawn’s mental state.
For Night Watch Headquarters, an investigator with such high sensitivity hasn’t appeared in decades.
People with high sensitivity experience a faster decline in rationality because they encounter more bizarre phenomena.
They don’t know Shawn lacks fear, so they pay special attention to his mental state. Rationality Value can’t be measured, and it’s only when specific signs of madness appear that something is noticed to be wrong.
So, under such circumstances, Shawn has become the most leisurely one.
"No way. I still need to train."
"I’ll continue applying for missions today."
If you don’t take the initiative, how can you accumulate experience?
He now feels like a special consultant at the Night Watch Headquarters, catered with good food and drink every day, having all sorts of requests met, and complete access to the secret archives. He has unrestricted access to review data on all recorded bizarre creatures.
It seems they’re grooming him to become a ’Legendary Investigator.’
Yesterday, the headquarters officially issued him a document, raising his salary by one grade, allowing him to apply for higher housing subsidies.
"The reward for my last mission should be coming soon as well."
After brushing his teeth, Shawn changed into a set of clothes. He had hired a laundress, who specifically serves tenants of this apartment building, charging a reasonable monthly fee, and works diligently.
It only costs 20 dinars a month, truly hard-earned money.
In the last bizarre event, Shawn contributed a lot, and the headquarters raised his salary by one level. His current salary is 3,300 dinars per month, roughly equivalent to a year’s salary for a regular worker in the Wharf District, about six times that of a white-collar worker. Other benefits have also slightly improved, including additional housing subsidies. Without accounting for reimbursements, he receives about 3,600 dinars per month.
Of course, investigators get additional reimbursements.
If he weren’t on the Wizard Path, this salary would allow Shawn to live a very affluent life.
Night Watch Headquarters.
Almost no ordinary people pass by here; those who do don’t notice this massive complex of buildings, likely due to some peculiar array that makes others automatically ignore everything here.
"Good morning, Sean." A clear, pleasant female voice reached him.
Shawn looked up and saw Daisy. Today, she wore a light blue floral long dress, appearing lively and adorable, like a whimsical girl-next-door.
However, after spending more time together, Shawn, like William, is a little afraid of her.
Just a little, not much.
"Good morning, Daisy." Shawn nodded lightly.
Daisy is an exchange student placed at the Night Watch Headquarters, often skipping classes at the university. Here, she occasionally checks in for a presence, and the higher-ups are hesitant to give her very dangerous tasks to avoid sparking diplomatic incidents.
