CHAPTER 113: CHAPTER 113: MOTHER’S TRAIL

ARIA POV

I ripped the picture in half, my hands shaking with rage.

It showed me as a five-year-old, playing alone in the pack’s training yard. Someone had been watching me even then. Taking pictures. Planning. "Elder Malin knew," I whispered. "He knew everything from the beginning."

"Aria, you need to see this," Frost called from across the abandoned temple.

I looked up from the scattered photos. We’d been hiding in the old refuge for three days while I recovered from using too much power. The other freed wolves were sleeping, finally safe behind walls blessed by the Moon Goddess herself.

Frost held up a leather notebook that had been hidden in Vincent’s briefcase. "This belonged to your mother. Her real name is written inside."

I stumbled over, still weak from my fall in the forest. Frost opened the book to the first page.

Property of Elena Moonstar, Luna of the Northern Packs.

"Elena Moonstar," I breathed. Not Luna Selene like Vincent had said. "Why did he lie about her name?"

"Maybe he didn’t know her real identity," Jaxon offered. He’d barely left my side since I’d fallen. "Read more."

I turned the page with shaky fingers. My mother’s handwriting was neat and careful, nothing like my messy scrawl.

Day 1: I’ve found something terrible. The Male Alpha Council has been steadily eliminating female Alphas for generations. They’re afraid of losing power.

My blood ran cold. "What?"

Day 15: Met with Luna Sarah from the Eastern Packs today. She confirmed my suspicions. Any female born with Alpha strength is either killed as a child or forced into Omega submission through drugs and psychological torture.

"That’s horrible," Marcus said, reading over my shoulder.

Day 32: The Silver Curse isn’t a curse at all. It’s growth. Female wolves are becoming stronger, more connected to the Moon Goddess. The Council can’t allow this to continue.

I looked up at the others. "The Silver Curse is just natural female Alpha power?"

"Keep reading," Frost encouraged.

Day 45: I’m pregnant. If I have a girl, they’ll try to kill her. I need to find the other surviving female Alphas and build a network to protect our children.

Tears burned my eyes. My mother had known I was in danger before I was even born.

Day 67: Found Luna Maria in the Southern Territories. She’s been hiding her true strength for twenty years, pretending to be a weak Beta. She knows of six other female Alphas doing the same thing.

"Six others?" Lucien leaned forward. "Are they still alive?"

I flipped through more pages, my heart racing with each entry.

Day 89: The network is growing. We call ourselves the Moon Sisters. Thirteen female Alphas working in secret to protect the next generation of children.

Day 134: Elena gave birth today. A girl with silver eyes. I’ve never seen anything so beautiful or so dangerous. The Council will kill her if they find out what she is.

That was me. The girl she was writing about was me.

Day 156: I’ve made contact with a collector called Vincent. He says he can help me find a way to hide Elena’s power until she’s old enough to defend herself. I don’t trust him, but I’m running out of choices.

"So that’s how she ended up at Vincent’s facility," Kael realized.

Day 189: Vincent failed me. He works for the Council. They knew about the Moon Sisters all along. Elder Malin has been feeding them details about every female Alpha we’ve tried to save.

My hands clenched into fists. Elder Malin. Always Elder Malin.

Day 203: I’m stuck in Vincent’s underground prison. But I’ve hidden Elena where they’ll never find her. Made everyone believe she’s just an Omega child. It breaks my heart, but it’s the only way to keep her safe.

"She gave up everything to protect you," Frost said softly.

Day 210: This will probably be my last post. Elder Malin is coming tomorrow to finish what the Council started. But I’ve encoded notes throughout this journal. If Elena ever finds this, she’ll know the truth about who she really is and where to find her sisters.

I turned the page, but the rest of the book was filled with strange symbols and numbers. Code.

"How am I supposed to read this?" I asked desperately.

"Maybe Luna can help," a small voice said from the corner.

I spun around. A little girl, maybe eight years old, was peeking out from behind one of the building pillars. I hadn’t seen her before.

"Who are you?" I asked softly.

"I’m Maya," she said shyly. "I was in the cage next to yours at Vincent’s place. But I hid when the fighting started."

Marcus knelt down to her level. "You’ve been here the whole time? Why didn’t you say anything?"

"Because I’m scared," Maya admitted. "Vincent said my mother was a bad dog who abandoned me. But when I heard you talking about the Moon Sisters..."

She pulled a small charm from under her shirt. It was silver, shaped like a crescent moon with thirteen tiny stars around it.

"My mother gave me this before she died," Maya whispered. "She said it would help me find my family someday."

I stared at the pendant in shock. "Maya, what was your mother’s name?"

"Luna Maria. She was from the Southern Territories."

My heart nearly stopped. Luna Maria. One of the Moon Sisters my mother had written about.

"Your mother was part of my mother’s network," I said, kneeling beside her. "That makes us sisters."

Maya’s eyes went wide. "Really?"

"Really. And I bet you know how to read code, don’t you?"

Maya nodded eagerly. "Mama taught me before she died. She said I might need it someday."

I gave her the journal with shaking hands. "Can you read this?"

Maya studied the marks for a long moment. Then she began to talk.

"The Moon Sisters are spread across five territories. Each one guards a piece of the puzzle. To unlock the true power of the Silver Alphas, find the Stone of Luna in the Hidden Valley, the Crown of Selene in the Crystal Caves, and the Heart of Diana in the Sunken Temple."

"Three artifacts," Jaxon said. "Like pieces of a treasure."

"There’s more," Maya kept reading. "But beware. The Council has placed a guardian at each spot. Only a true daughter of the moon can pass their tests."

"What kind of tests?" I asked.

Maya’s face went pale as she read the next part. "To prove you are worthy, you must face your greatest fear, overcome your deepest shame, and sacrifice what you value most."

A chill ran down my spine. Those didn’t sound like tests. They sounded like pain.

"Is there anything else?" Frost asked.

Maya nodded, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The end message says: ’Trust no one completely. The betrayer walks among the women. One of the Moon Sisters serves the Council, and she will try to stop Elena when the time comes.’"

Silence fell over the temple. One of my mother’s friends was a traitor.

"How many Moon Sisters are still alive?" Marcus asked quietly.

Maya checked the notebook again. "According to this, seven survived the Council’s last sweep. They’re scattered across the territories, still hiding their true names."

Seven female Alphas. One of them a liar. And I had to find them all if I wanted to unlock the power needed to stop the Council for good.

"We need to split up," I decided. "Cover more ground, find these Moon Sisters faster."

"Absolutely not," Kael said strongly. "We’re not leaving you alone again."

"He’s right," Lucien agreed. "Elder Malin is still out there. So is Silas. You’re safer with us."

But even as they spoke, I felt something cold settle in my stomach. If one of the Moon Sisters was working for the Council, how could I trust anyone?

"Fine," I said. "We stay together. But we need to move fast. The longer we wait, the more time they have to—"

A howl echoed through the trees outside. Then another. And another.

We all froze.

"Those aren’t controlled wolves," Marcus said sadly. "Those are Council Enforcers."

"How did they find us?" Frost whispered. "This place is supposed to be protected."

Maya’s face had gone white as snow. She was looking at something behind me with pure terror in her eyes.

I turned around slowly.

Elder Malin stood in the temple doorway, smiling his terrible smile.

"Hello, children," he said kindly. "I do hope you’ve liked reading Elena’s journal. She was always such a great writer."

"The protection spells," I breathed. "How did you get through them?"

Elder Malin held up a silver pendant similar to Maya’s. "The Moon Sisters’ own jewelry. Clever, isn’t it? Elena thought she was building a network of allies, but she was really just making it easier for me to track down every female Alpha in existence."

My world crashed down around me. The Moon Sisters’ pendants weren’t security. They were tracking devices.

"You used my mother’s own network against her," I whispered.

"I used her love for you against her," Elder Malin amended. "Every Moon Sister she contacted, every safe house she established, every coded message she sent – all of it led me straight to more female Alphas to eliminate."

Maya was crying quietly, clutching her pendant.

"But you made one mistake, Elena," Elder Malin continued, speaking to my mother as if she were standing right there. "You assumed all thirteen Moon Sisters were loyal to your cause."

My blood turned to ice. "Thirteen? But Maya said there were only seven survivors."

Elder Malin’s smile widened. "Oh, there are thirteen survivors, my dear. Six who stayed loyal to your mother’s memory."

He paused dramatically.

"Six who serve the Council. And one who serves me personally."

One of the freed wolves behind me stepped forward. I turned to see who it was, and my heart broke into a million pieces.

Frost smiled Elder Malin’s same terrible smile.

"Hello, sister," she said softly. "I’ve been waiting so long to meet Elena Moonstar’s daughter."
