Carlotta's Daily Report
Chapter 263 263: Southern Continent
Carlotta could completely understand the High Priestess's desire to go to Sky Island. Sky Island was renowned alongside the Tower of Babel, suspected to have connections with gods, and clearly held a wealth of information about them. If they went there, with their current strength, they would likely gain something valuable.
Yet, as Carlotta had said, Sky Island appeared far too randomly. No one knew when it might manifest, there were no discernible patterns.
After Carlotta explained the situation regarding Sky Island, the High Priestess couldn't help but sigh, feeling a bit troubled indeed.
The secret of the Forbidden Sea they had uncovered. The state of the Central Ruins they now understand. Only Sky Island remained a mystery. Perhaps there, valuable information awaits.
The High Priestess pondered and said, "Or... perhaps we could go see the southern continent of this world?"
The southern continent, a land Carlotta had long heard of but never set foot upon, lay far in the distant south.
Hearing this, Carlotta thought for a moment and replied, "The southern continent... Hmm, maybe we really should go take a look."
On the northern continent, the gods had left behind various arrangements and contingencies. It made no sense for the southern continent to have nothing of the sort.
She recalled what she knew about the southern continent. It seemed to be divided into three major factions:
The human faction, the beastman faction, and the Demon King faction.
The human faction was nothing special, just ordinary humans, albeit living on a different continent.
As for the beastmen, Carlotta had encountered many during her time at the Bass Archipelago, and she held no favorable impression of them. Beastmen were extremely hostile towards humans, even treating them as food, literal man-eating monsters. In the southern continent, humans never ate beastmen; they simply couldn't stomach it.
The Demon King faction was composed of demons, a diverse group of beings. Currently, it was the strongest faction in the southern continent. Both the beastmen and the humans suffer losses whenever they face the Demon King faction.
Carlotta had crossed paths with the Demon King faction before. Back at the Bass Archipelago, when her identity had been exposed, the Demon King himself had personally intervened, attempting to seize the Stellar Workshop from her. Only because the High Priestess had been present at the scene and stopped the Demon King's actions had he ultimately left empty-handed.
"Then let's go see the southern continent."
Carlotta made her decision.
Neither she nor the High Priestess dared to approach the prisons of the Outer Gods on the moon or the sun, those entities still far surpass anything they can handle.
They intended to search whether the gods had left behind any useful contingencies that might aid them.
Once the decision was made, Carlotta brought out the New Moon, and everyone boarded the vessel, immediately setting off toward the southern continent.
The journey was quite long. Reaching the southern continent clearly required significant time. During the voyage, Carlotta and the others took the opportunity to rest and recuperate inside the New Moon's cabins.
Flying through the sky, the New Moon pierced through clouds and mists, treating the layers of clouds as oceans.
Occasionally, while resting, Carlotta looked up at the sea of clouds beyond the porthole, feeling utterly refreshed.
"When everything is finally over, I'm going to travel every day, and have fun every day."
Carlotta muttered.
"There will be such a day."
Amelia smiled gently.
The New Moon moved extremely fast. After several days, it had already crossed over to the southern continent, arriving above the Bass Archipelago.
During these days, the gathered intelligence had mostly been reports about Carlotta, mentioning where people were discussing her, how many textbooks had included her story, or where statues of her had been erected.
Under such circumstances, Carlotta's faith reserves continued to grow. She truly realized that among all the Transcendents paths, the Path of Faith was the one she advanced along the fastest. This was closely tied to her widely spread fame.
The faster her name spread, the more admired she received, the greater the faith she gathered, and thus, the stronger she became.
In this regard, the Path of Faith was likely the easiest to rapidly master. However, the prerequisite for such rapid advancement was something not everyone could achieve.
The Bass Archipelago remained as bustling as ever. After all, this place was known as the world's center, where people from both northern and southern continents gathered, bringing a prosperity rarely seen elsewhere.
Carlotta didn't linger here longer than necessary. She passed straight through the Bass Archipelago and arrived above the Misty Sea to the south.
The Misty Sea was perpetually shrouded in thick fog hovering over its waters. Within the mist lurked many dangers, sea monsters that thrive in foggy environments. Few who accidentally entered the mist ever returned.
Yet, over long ages, people from the southern continent had managed to identify a very few safe passages through the Misty Sea. With these routes, crossing the sea was no longer so perilous. As long as one stayed within the designated paths, safety could be assured.
Carlotta, piloting the New Moon toward the southern continent, had no intention of seeking out these safe passageways. Such routes were winding and indirect, not straight lines, and traveling they would take considerable time. She much preferred going straight through.
Besides, with her current strength, what did she have to fear from the monsters within the Misty Sea?
Monsters that were terrifying to ordinary people were barely pets to her.
"Whoosh!"
The New Moon shot forward rapidly, instantly diving into the Misty Sea. Beyond the portholes, only a gray haze remained visible, even the high altitudes were obscured by fog.
However, the New Moon possessed exceptional navigation capabilities. Even when nothing could be seen ahead, it advanced without the slightest hindrance.
Yet Carlotta hadn't expected that, even at such high altitudes, they would still come under attack.
A long, piercing cry echoed through the mist. Immediately afterward, a massive shadow approached the New Moon. As it drew near, a surge of freezing air erupted from it, quickly enveloping the vessel.
Despite the obscuring mist, the New Moon managed to capture the figure of their attacker, a whale capable of flying through the sky!
The whale was pure white, its body covered with countless eyes, making it appear especially terrifying.
"The legendary Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale?"
Amelia made the identification.
Carlotta hadn't heard of such a creature before. After asking, Amelia explained.
The Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale was one of the greatest threats in the Misty Sea. Survivors who had narrowly escaped the Misty Sea all spoke of this terrifying being, a creature nearly on par with a Weaver in power.
To ordinary people, a Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale was terrifying beyond measure, on par with a Weaver. But to Carlotta now, such a monster was no longer so afraid.
The freezing breath spewed by the Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale was completely blocked by New Moon's built-in shield. It couldn't harm the ship at all, nor even cause the slightest tremor.
Then the New Moon struck back. Beams of light burst from its surroundings, instantly erupting into blinding flames, engulfing the massive Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale. Large holes were immediately blasted into its body, causing the whale to shriek in agonizing pain.
Hardly had the clash begun when the Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale realized it stood no chance against this hunk of steel. It turned, attempting to flee.
"You started this fight. Leaving so casually isn't quite appropriate, is it?"
Carlotta murmured softly.
New Moon now possessed terrifying combat power, on par with an Exalted.
The Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale, though ranked as a middle tier Weaver, was clearly no match at all against New Moon.
With just a simple dash, New Moon closed the distance, then unleashed a barrage of fire. One beam after another, each with different destructive effects, crisscrossed like a net, trapping the enormous whale within. In moments, its body was riddled with countless wounds.
In the sea of clouds, the Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale let out its final mournful cry, then helplessly plummeted from the sky. In only a short time under New Moon's assault, this once-infamous beast met its end here.
Carlotta guided New Moon to fly past the whale's corpse. Initially, she had thought of taking the body back as food, but after seeing the creature up close, she felt a wave of nausea. Its massive body was densely covered with eyes, far more than a hundred. Such a thing, she simply couldn't bring herself to eat.
Instead, she collected only materials useful for other purposes, then piloted New Moon away.
She had come in haste and left just as quickly, yet her brief appearance stirred immense chaos across the Misty Sea. The blood of the slain Hundred-Eyed Demon Whale spilled into the ocean, causing many monsters to flee in terror.
Although lacking intelligence, these creatures possessed instinct, and instinct told them to fear and hide.
For a long time to come, the Misty Sea will remain tranquil. But unless one ventured deep into the fog, those traveling along safe sea routes will never know.
The New Moon continued cutting across the Misty Sea, encountering no further trouble, passing smoothly through the fog.
When the New Moon finally emerged, Carlotta immediately saw blue skies, white clouds, and a continent not far in the distance through the porthole.
It was the Southern Continent. From afar, it had mountains and rivers, though its plains were more extensive than those of the Northern Continent.
"So the Southern Continent is this close to the Misty Sea?"
Carlotta muttered.
The fog of the Misty Sea didn't extend all the way to land, only the coastal waters remained clear.
Now hovering above the Southern Continent, the New Moon had activated its invisibility upon departure, so no one could perceive its presence.
Carlotta looked down. Vast cities sprawled beneath her, human settlements. It seemed the northern coastal regions of the Southern Continent all belonged to human territories.
"Let's go down and take a look."
Carlotta invited Amelia.
Amelia naturally had no objection.
Carlotta intended to learn more about the Southern Continent, a land entirely different from the North. Her understanding of this place was shallow, and the little knowledge she had from the Northern Continent clearly wasn't enough.
From the air, Carlotta could easily identify which city below was the most prosperous. Without hesitation, she steered toward it.
The most bustling city was clearly a coastal one in the north, an unsurprising fact. Coastal cities were usually richer and more vibrant due to easier transportation, saving immense labor and resources.
It didn't take long before Carlotta and Amelia landed in this city called Strala Port.
Within the sprawling city, buildings bore a distinct exotic style. The language spoken on the streets was unfamiliar, but both women knew many tongues. Their prior study of the Southern Continent's language allowed them to understand perfectly and communicate fluently, ensuring no locals would suspect them as foreigners.
On the streets, in shops, fruits, teas, and various tools all looked novel to Carlotta. Most of these things were unknown, absent in the Northern Continent.
Holding Amelia's hand, Carlotta strolled leisurely, buying all sorts of items. Unfamiliar fruits tasted strange yet sweet. Meat from unknown monsters, roasted until crisp and delicious. Even Southern Continent board games hold their own unique charm.
After wandering the city, Carlotta learned much about local customs and savored many regional delicacies.
The continent also had newspapers. Later, she took Amelia to a newsstand and bought several papers, undoubtedly the best way to gather information.
But after reading a few, Carlotta grew impatient. Most reports weren't truly significant, well, perhaps important to others, but to her, they were underwhelming.
She walked straight to the newsstand owner, a plump woman wearing glasses, and asked, "Ma'am, we've been at sea for quite some time and just returned. Has there been any major news this past year? Of course, I'll pay."
Carlotta smiled slightly, pulling out a generous sum of money.
She had killed several powerful beastmen, who carried human-currency. Even a tiny portion was more than sufficient.
Wherever you go, money makes things easy. The newsstand owner's face instantly lit up at the sight, then quickly began recounting the more notable events of late.
As the newsstand owner, she didn't need to consult newspapers. The most significant events? A quick recollection was enough.
