Chapter 1865: Chapter 881: Case Details – Find a Solution_2
Right now, Hu San adamantly claims that he is just an honest restaurant owner, although he may be a bit playful. Besides, even though Sun Xiaowei has a criminal record, he has borrowed money several times before and repaid it gradually. He’s not the type to default, which is why the money was lent to him. Unexpectedly, he borrowed a bit more this time and wants to dodge repayment.
The so-called borrowing more, in fact, is just two or three thousand yuan. The restaurant is not in a bustling area, and those who usually hang around here are just locals with idle time, most without serious occupations. They don’t have the means to gamble big—someone like Sun Xiaowei, who has ‘skills’ to get money, is already considered quite affluent.
Interrogation has reached a stalemate here.
Both insist they are telling the truth, and although Hu San is childless, he has a wife. She firmly asserts that her husband isn’t that kind of person; aside from being a bit playful, he wouldn’t instruct anyone to steal feed—besides, what would he do with stolen feed anyway?
But this doesn’t mean they have no way to deal with these two. After an entire night of fruitless interrogation, at dawn, the investigators dispersed to begin uncovering these two individuals’ backgrounds.
There’s no need to discuss Sun Xiaowei’s background; people at the police station are familiar with him. They know this guy is a repeat offender, where his family lives, and that his criminal methods are quite seasoned. But no matter how seasoned, with a criminal record, finding him is easy. He’s the type who sticks to familiar areas, even after committing crimes, having fun nearby, making him very easy to catch.
Mainly the focus is on investigating Hu San. Every time Sun Xiaowei gets caught, he persistently confesses for leniency. In his words, his meals are free once inside, and a good performance means just a few months—after all, the theft amounts are small. Collaborate a bit for reform, return any leftover money from indulgences, and the sentence won’t be long.
This time, he insists that Hu San prompted him to do it, and vows that Hu San will be thoroughly investigated.
Hu San isn’t a local, a fact that draws the investigators’ attention. On the surface, both are well-identified; Hu San hails from a small southern locality, a remote village.
His wife was someone he met while out doing business, who seems decent.
Even calls to the village committee confirmed the existence of such a person.
…
By now, Yan Fei in America has received the news.
After the initial excitement of engaging in misdeeds with Yan Fei, Xu Xiaoyan moved on to ‘rational thinking’—considering how the opposing side would react to Yan Fei’s actions, whether it would stop them from proposing, and so forth.
The conclusion was that it was impossible.
Evidently, their business isn’t just limited to this ranch. Faced with such a huge issue now, what would be the normal course of action? Certainly, calming the public while putting forth proposals to distract them.
Distracting attention is not only common in casual chat but frequently utilized by media as well—like when something tragic occurs in a place, and its impact is too negative; timely delivery of another news to direct the online populace towards newer concerns gradually diminishes the original issue.
In America, those involved in media and politics are familiar with this tactic, such as when a bribe scandal involving a senator occurs in a state, and the populace pays keen attention. If the matter lingers too long, it could not only undermine the credibility of those in power but also impact subsequent election votes.
So, when such situations arise, quickly find some incident to publicize extensively, to divert the populace’s focus to another matter, naturally stopping the persistent fermentation of the matter they wish away from public attention.
Now that a mysterious disappearance event has occurred, throw something like a UFO into the mix, spreading some vague yet true messages. Bewilder first, then seize the chance to enhance the impact of another event—after all, for the populace, they are easily fooled. Many rush to comment on surface phenomena, inadvertently becoming agents pushing the occurrence forward, they don’t even think through it.
Like now, the news of Chinese beef ‘invading’ America, local ranchers worrying about the future and other events, is a great topic. Or they could simultaneously promote others, like low-priced goods from a country stifling local businesses, or certain foreign populations snatching local job opportunities at low wages, these are prime topics easy to steer public opinion.
After considering so much, Xu Xiaoyan was at a loss: “Yan Xiaofei, then what do you think we should do? If this really happens, it turns out that what we’ve done gives them more reason to speak about our beef, wouldn’t it have been better not to do anything?”
After mulling over the words, Yan Fei still couldn’t find the right approach to express his thoughts without shocking the girl. Finally pushing himself, cautiously he asked, “What if that person cracks under the pressure and commits suicide?”
“Ah?” The girl’s lips parted slightly, utterly surprised. “You want him to ‘be suicidal’? But there’ll be a death involved then?”
“Killing one to save hundreds!” Yan Fei immediately started weaving falsehoods. “Think about it, if his proposal succeeds, how much less beef we’ll sell? With a decline in beef sales, fewer cattle will be raised in our countryside and county, resulting in less income. Consider the situation in nearby towns, similar to how it was in ours before, where people fearing illness wouldn’t see a doctor because of lack of funds!”
“If there’s money, who would willingly endure sickness at home? Who would choose to buy An Naijin for a severe fever and go home to sweat it out under blankets? Who would get caught in dire sickness and simply go home early to wait for death?”
Using An Naijin to sweat through a fever under blankets was a common practice in the villages before. Even students did this frequently; Xu Xiaoyan knew of similar instances. There were people going home to await death from serious diseases too, given that health insurance wasn’t common yet.
Xu Xiaoyan found Yan Fei’s reasoning somewhat sensible, yet deep down felt that something wasn’t right. It took a while for her to realize that Yan Xiaofei’s plan to have someone ‘suicidal’ involved a human life!
Having always been taught to be a good girl, Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t against supporting Yan Xiaofei, but felt uneasy about him doing such a thing.
Then after thinking about it, she suggested: “How about capturing the person to work at our ranch, let them herd cattle for us?”
Yan Fei was a bit taken aback.
In his view, being caught and made to toil for life wasn’t much different from dying.
But Xu Xiaoyan thought differently; she felt that in a world akin to the realm of dinosaurs, those laborers lived quite well, being fed well and appearing cheerful when they greeted others. It was clearly a harmonious big ranch.
Moreover, with beautiful landscapes, rivers, and seaside, fresh air, pure nature free of pollution, no mundane fame conflicts, nor issues entangled within social relationships. It was evidently a haven for hermits too!
If someone is absolutely fooling themselves, it’s likely because they convinced themselves that since Yan Xiaofei had sent someone away initially, their mindset changed and they started self-justifying, wanting to create the perfect excuse for Yan Xiaofei. Thinking so much, she inadvertently ended up deceiving herself!
She knowingly or unknowingly disregarded a problem, while the laborers appeared to be living well, their lives lacked security. Plus, they were destined to remain within that ranch for life, with the furthest venture being working at a gold mine to view different scenery.
However, Yan Fei deemed it unfeasible: “That guy’s involved in the ranch too; if someone goes missing again after the ranch’s incident, it’ll arouse suspicion!”
Then Xu Xiaoyan furrowed her brow in prolonged thought, suddenly turning her head with an angry demeanor: “I don’t care, do whatever you want! I’m going to find a place to sleep, you go ahead with whatever you want.”
After walking a few steps, she muttered under her breath again: “Just solve things properly.”
Having been familiar with his wife for some time now, Yan Fei could discern if she’s truly upset. Delighted in his heart, realizing that the woman had tacitly accepted his idea.
But the moment joy washed over him, a phone call came, revealing that someone had done bad deeds at his Sancha River ranch.
Instantly, his mood turned sour, knowing even if he were to fly back it’d take a day, so he decided to swiftly handle matters at hand—anyway, he’d return within two days, and that would be the time to address it.
