CHAPTER 113: CHAPTER 113: CARRYING YOU UNTIL OUR HAIR TURNS WHITE

Even though Ruby Sullivan’s mind was a bit dazed, and she seemed a bit off, she was quite clear on certain matters in her heart. Even if he didn’t say it, she knew he didn’t want to marry her.

He was so handsome, with such beautiful legs, capable, and came from a good family. There were so many fair-skinned and beautiful heiresses who wanted to marry him. If it weren’t for the business crisis and his grandmother’s orders, he would never marry a woman like her.

She understood why he wouldn’t sleep with her, but the more she understood, the sadder it made her.

Ruby Sullivan thought of many things from the past, her nose started to tingle, and she felt like crying, and then she heard him say, "I’ve never regretted anything, including marrying you the first time."

After Ethan Sterling said this, he felt the weight on his heart lift, and he felt a lot more at ease, as if carrying Ruby wasn’t so difficult anymore.

He only came to understand this recently.

In his youthful arrogance, he was conceited and very shallow in his thinking. Not sharing a bed with her was partly due to inexplicable disdain but also as a way to show defiance to his grandmother. He always hoped to control The Sterling Group as soon as possible to escape his grandmother’s control. He didn’t realize that his impatience would almost lead The Sterling Group to ruin. Thus, when he reluctantly married Ruby Sullivan, he felt not only that she was unmatched for himself in looks but also humiliated.

Seeing her every day reminded him of his incompetence, but as he grew older, he gradually let go of these feelings. Only those truly incompetent will blame their own incompetence on others.

He enjoyed her care, the elaborate meals she prepared daily, and even deliberately accepted Rhonda Sullivan’s kindness to get close to her, all to disgust Ruby at the time. Looking back now, it all seemed childish and ridiculous.

Back then, he clearly preferred her cooking so much that he was unwilling to eat outside food. Even though he was close to Rhonda, from time to time, he worried that the silly, chubby girl would be bullied.

It wasn’t until she suddenly disappeared that he realized how significant a part she played in his life.

He didn’t know if he loved her, but he couldn’t accept her leaving a divorce agreement behind without saying a word and disappearing.

He swore he would find her no matter what.

But he was also desperately trying to forget her, questioning what right she had to occupy his memory...

Ethan Sterling adjusted her upwards, took a breath, and continued walking forward.

"After you left, I missed you a lot. I missed your cooking, how you laid out my clothes on the sofa every day, and even the tie you picked for me." He smiled, "I was sulking for a while and didn’t wear a tie for two months."

Ruby Sullivan was dumbfounded, "Really?"

"Of course it’s true." Ethan Sterling smiled, feeling the warm liquid running down his neck, knowing she was crying, so he stopped talking and quietly walked forward.

He was exhausted, but he didn’t want her to get down, as if by walking continuously, they could journey from youth to old age together.

But it wasn’t long before he realized the little person on his back was breathing much more deeply. He tried shaking his back, but Ruby Sullivan didn’t make a sound, confirming she had fallen asleep and was sleeping soundly.

Ethan Sterling’s forehead was already covered in sweat. He painstakingly took out his phone to call Howard, asking him to come quickly to pick them up.

Howard saw from afar the sight of his boss carrying the boss’s wife on the roadside and thought he was seeing things. Though he always believed his boss had a magical charm, he never imagined the boss would be so easily tamed.

Ethan Sterling saw him staring with wide eyes as he got out of the car, and glared at him displeased, "What’s with that look?"

Howard took a deep breath, quickly pressed his lips together to hold back a laugh, averted his gaze, and opened the back door, "Um, Mr. Sterling, do you need help?" He wanted to help transfer Ruby Sullivan down first.

"No need." Ethan Sterling directly walked over and put her into the car, then got into the front passenger seat himself.

The moment he sat in the car, he felt an indescribable happiness.

Ethan Sterling rubbed his waist and stretched, "Get me a personal trainer tomorrow."

"Yes, Mr. Sterling."

Ethan Sterling thought for a moment and added, "Do you think I should suggest Ruby Sullivan lose some weight?" He really felt she was a bit heavy. Aren’t girls supposed to be as light as feathers?

Howard glanced at him, confirmed the boss wasn’t joking, and said seriously, "I think Wenny is already very slim."

Ethan Sterling pursed his lips, frowned, still reluctant to accept the truth, "Really?" Could it be that he himself was just that weak?

Howard deliberated for a moment and said, "Actually, with women, they may not look like they have much weight, but they’re quite heavy. Mr. Sterling, you’re in good shape, some training will do."

"Hmm." Ethan Sterling felt Howard might have more insight on women than him, and nodded in agreement.

After napping in the car, Ruby Sullivan felt much more awake. As she took a shower, she slowly began recalling her own mischievous actions, and at the thought of sharing a bed with Ethan Sterling later, she felt her scalp prickling.

However, she also sensed her mind wasn’t very clear, perhaps she had a dream, and she hadn’t differentiated properly. A man like Ethan Sterling might show off affection by kissing her cheek when there’s an audience, but would never indulge her whims when no one’s watching.

The more Ruby Sullivan thought about it, the more she convinced herself she must have dreamt it, which eased her mind considerably.

When she tiptoed back to the room, Ethan Sterling was sitting at the window drinking red wine. From their time together, she already knew he only drank red wine to help sleep when he was sleepless, but it had been a while since she had seen him drink.

Her mind was a jumbled mess, not knowing what to say, intending to sneak into bed quietly without disturbing him, not expecting Ethan Sterling to suddenly tilt his head and smile at her.

Ruby Sullivan, feeling guilty, instinctively stood up straight, "Um, going to sleep?"

Ethan Sterling nodded, then finished his glass of wine, got into bed before her, and seeing her still standing foolishly, asked puzzled, "Aren’t you going to sleep?"

"Sleep, sleep." Ruby Sullivan responded repeatedly, quickly climbing into bed, her mind filled with doubts whether she should ask him if she really had a dream or if it actually happened.

"You seem to like lying with your back to me." Ethan Sterling lay on his side, looking at the back of her head, smiling slightly, though there seemed to be some discontent in his words.

Ruby Sullivan was a bit nervous, "Scientists say sleeping face to face leads to a localized increase in carbon dioxide concentration, prolonged exposure could lead to hypoxia-induced dementia."

Ethan Sterling burst out laughing, turning her shoulder to have her lie on her back like him, "Then let’s just stay like this." After saying this, he held her hand, adding, "I’m starting to work out tomorrow, next time, I should be able to carry you further."

He sensed the hand he was holding stiffen, feeling a little proud inside.
