Conquest Game: The Aloof Husband is Dangerous!
Chapter 64: Have You Made Progress with the Demon King?
CHAPTER 64: CHAPTER 64: HAVE YOU MADE PROGRESS WITH THE DEMON KING?
Stella Jennings chattered away at length.
Laura Quincy’s drowsiness instantly dissipated, "Team Leader Jennings, I..."
Stella coldly interrupted her, "Four days off for a cold and fever is enough, hurry to the company!"
With that, she hung up the phone.
Laura sat on the bed, staring blankly at her phone. What was happening?
She thought for a moment and immediately sent Stella a text message: Team Leader Jennings, I’m planning to resign.
The reply came quickly: Are you sure you want to be a deserter?
The word "deserter" sent a shiver through Laura. She was always one to move forward bravely, never to be a deserter in anything...
Two minutes later, she replied: Thank you, Team Leader Jennings. I’ll be at the company shortly.
She got up, washed, and dressed tidily.
Laura drove her little Fit urgently toward the company. Even if she was going to resign, she had to finish her current work.
If she was going to leave, she’d leave with dignity.
Not to be called a deserter.
If so, how could she face continuing in this profession?
She feared that her being a "deserter" would become known by everyone...
Stella never expected that her carelessness would keep her strongest rival, Laura. Had she known, she would have tried her best to drive Laura away. (But that’s a story for later.)
Laura’s first action upon arriving at the company was to deliver the summary report from her last business trip to Team Leader Jennings. Just as she was about to leave, she was stopped.
"I saw yesterday’s news too. Since your misunderstanding has been cleared up, don’t bother the CEO with this anymore. The reason I chose to keep you is because of your work ability. One should know contentment, not overreach, and not covet things that could never belong to them."
Stella’s words were full of warning.
Laura looked at her in disbelief, "Team Leader Jennings, I don’t know what you’re talking about."
Stella said meaningfully, "A smart woman should understand. I’m sure you’re not stupid."
Laura: "..."
Stella didn’t give her a chance to speak again, "You may leave now! The engineers from the Gaulia airline company will be here this afternoon, and you’re responsible for accompanying and hosting them."
Laura nodded, "Okay."
The translation work for this large Gaulia airline company had always been managed by her, so it made sense for her to be in charge of the reception.
After Laura left, Stella called the CEO’s office. The call was answered by Mason Cross, who, upon learning of Laura’s return, said nothing and promised to pass the information on to the BOSS.
Stella couldn’t help but ask, "Assistant Cross, does Jason have an interest in Laura?"
Mason was at a loss for words. How could he answer that?
He could only say tactfully, "Miss Jennings, how would I, as the Special Assistant, know about the BOSS’s personal matters? In fact, you should be the closest one to the BOSS."
This light-hearted answer pushed the topic back to Stella.
Stella bit her lip, knowing she shouldn’t have asked the question, then smoothed it over, "Assistant Cross, just pretend I didn’t ask that. Nothing happened."
Mason understood, "Of course! I didn’t hear anything."
After hanging up the phone, Stella furrowed her brow and thought: No matter which woman Jason is interested in, she must nip it in the bud!
As for Laura, though she was quite attractive, Stella had privately investigated; she lost her mother early, her family’s business had long been taken over by her stepfather, and even the home that should have been hers had become her father’s and her stepmother’s and stepsister’s...
With such a family background, she was not at all a worthy competitor!
Keeping her close would make it easier to monitor her.
A win-win solution!
Stella forgot, though, that sometimes the safest place is also the most dangerous one...
It was because she underestimated Laura, thinking she wasn’t a threat, that she stumbled.
After leaving Stella’s office, Laura was in a bad mood. When had she ever harassed The Demon King? Clearly, he was the one who always came to bother her!
Could it be that The Demon King said something to Stella?
How inexplicable!
She wished she could just focus on her work without any outside distractions!
Crystal Langley noticed her and promptly asked with concern, "Is your cold better?"
Laura nodded, "Yes, much better. What big things have happened these days?"
She knew that to catch up on gossip, she just needed to ask Crystal and the others.
Crystal grinned slyly, "Big events! Aren’t they all related to you!"
Laura Quincy was stunned for a second before realizing that Crystal Langley was also talking about the incident on Weibo yesterday.
She let out a bitter laugh, "I’m getting hit even while lying down! Honestly though, I was misunderstood from the start, so it’s only right to clear my name."
Crystal grinned as she leaned closer, "I’m just curious why the CEO suddenly clarified the issue? Between you two..."
She dared not speak openly and purposely kept it vague.
Laura maintained an innocent expression, "Truth will always come to light eventually! What’s so strange about that?"
Seeing her calm demeanor, Crystal found it difficult to press further.
From this incident, Laura realized she would be misunderstood for a while...
But the innocent will prove their innocence. She indeed had no ambiguous relationship with The Demon King, and it was impossible to dig any valuable gossip out of her.
In one ear, out the other!
In the afternoon.
Laura accompanied Vice President Yates to welcome the engineers from Gaulia, and the whole process went smoothly. They agreed to visit the new factory tomorrow and then have the heads of both parties sign the contract on the third day.
After three days of accompanying and translating from morning till night, Laura’s recently recovered health was still struggling a bit. It was much more tiring than sitting in an office.
Running around with a group of men in high heels, how could it not be exhausting!
Finally, the contract signing on the third day brought a sigh of relief to Laura. After tonight, her task would be successfully completed.
The celebrations were scheduled on a luxury cruise, and since there was an open-air party that evening, formal attire was required.
With a face full of reluctance, Laura realized she should keep a couple of evening dresses ready in her wardrobe for such events in the future.
Pressed for time, she quickly rented a nude pink knee-length dress.
During the evening, as the translator, Laura had to stick with Mr. George and Engineer Owen.
She was irritated to discover that Mr. George was quite touchy-feely, using the opportunity of toasting to grope her from time to time, which disgusted her.
But in the presence of Vice President Yates, she had no choice but to endure.
At that moment, she found herself missing The Demon King. If he were here, he probably wouldn’t let this happen, right?
"Vice President Yates, Mr. George, Mr. Owen, I’m going to the restroom for a moment."
Laura found an excuse to leave. Dealing with a handsy man like him, if you can’t refuse directly, you have to handle it wisely.
After she left, Mr. George continued staring at her graceful retreating figure with lecherous eyes.
Angelo York had long known that Mr. George was fond of women. It seemed he was interested in Laura. Although the company had cases of translators accompanying clients before, this Laura...
He still needed to consult with the CEO.
While he was hesitating, Stella Jennings suddenly came over with a wine glass. It seemed she had been secretly observing the situation for some time.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Stella pulled Angelo aside, "Is Mr. George interested in Laura?"
Angelo could only nod, "Yes, but... such matters require the consent of the parties involved. We can’t force it, considering the company’s policies."
Stella nodded, "Of course. What I mean is, if we want the contract to go smoothly, Laura might need to pretend to entertain Mr. George. It’s just pretending, not for real, you get what I mean?"
Angelo was still a bit hesitant, but considering that Stella was the CEO’s chosen fiancée, he couldn’t say much. Perhaps this was the CEO’s intention.
"Alright, I’ll persuade her."
"Make sure to get Mr. George drunk later. I’ll handle the initial round."
With that, Stella strutted in her high heels towards the lecherous Mr. George. She’d been deliberately building her tolerance for alcohol these years just to stand beside Jason Hawthorne and be his supportive work partner.
Mr. George, being fond of beautiful women, didn’t refuse Stella’s offer to drink.
A few drinks later, his face was already flushed.
At this point, Laura returned and seeing Stella drinking with Mr. George gave her a sense of foreboding. Did that mean she’d have to drink too?
Stella noticed her return and cheerfully advised, "Laura, take good care of Mr. George. I have some matters to attend to. I’ll head over first."
With that, she left.
The nearby server swiftly and astutely poured a glass of wine for Laura. Being pushed into such a situation, she had no choice but to take it, feeling utterly miserable inside.
After three glasses, Laura felt a burning sensation in her stomach. She had to find an excuse to go to the restroom, but Mr. George blocked her way, "Miss Quincy, are you not keen on drinking with me? Why are you trying to leave after just three glasses?"
Laura had to patiently explain, "Mr. George, I might have eaten something bad today and my stomach feels uneasy. To put it simply, I have an upset stomach. Everyone understands nature calls, right? Surely, a man of your stature can understand that?"
She spoke with composure, making sure her words were heard by the surrounding people, giving Mr. George a little check.
Mr. George glanced at her, his expression sour, but could only let her go for now, thinking that no matter what, he wouldn’t let her off tonight!
After leaving the restroom, Laura didn’t immediately return to the banquet hall. Instead, she went to the balcony to catch her breath, contemplating how to deal with Mr. George later.
Over the years, she had encountered similar lecherous men like Mr. George at work. With no help, she could only rely on her own quick wits.
During college, she and her roommate, and close friend Yasmine Thorne had even worked part-time at a nightclub selling drinks, as it was a quick cash job that paid daily. They merely needed to protect themselves from being harassed by customers.
