Conquest Game: The Aloof Husband is Dangerous!
Chapter 74: No Way!
CHAPTER 74: CHAPTER 74: NO WAY!
It really is true, I have to admit.
From her angle, she could see his profile perfectly—sharp features, a finely chiseled face as if carved with a knife. No wonder people call him the nation’s heartthrob...
In terms of looks, he’s definitely worth the title.
Throughout the meeting, Laura Quincy found her eyes occasionally drifting towards someone, which made her a bit annoyed. She took a deep breath and forced herself to focus on listening to the translation.
After the meeting, Laura thought about leaving the fifty-ninth floor quickly. This place was not for her!
Asher Thorne saw her rushing and hurriedly called out, "Why are you in such a hurry? I have something to discuss with you, come to my office."
Laura Quincy: "..."
Alright! She could only follow Young Master Thorne to his office.
During the process, she bumped into Jasper Hawthorne, but she looked straight ahead, as if she didn’t see him.
Jasper Hawthorne glanced at Laura’s back, thought for a moment, and headed to his uncle’s office.
Jason Hawthorne had just settled in when he heard a knock on the door and spoke in a deep voice, "Come in."
Jasper Hawthorne pushed the door open and entered.
"President Hawthorne, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you."
The familiar voice made Jason look up. His father had permitted Jasper to gain experience in the company, and he didn’t oppose it. The External Affairs Department wasn’t a critical position, and the deputy manager was someone whom he trusted, so Jasper couldn’t stir much trouble.
Since his brother’s intentions were clear, he naturally had to give him a taste of something sweet.
"Oh? What’s the matter?"
"Can you transfer Laura Quincy to become my secretary?"
"No."
Jason Hawthorne refused without a second thought. He would never agree to this reason.
Jasper immediately countered, "Why not? She’s just a junior translator. The third group can function without her; she’s not that essential. Why won’t you let her go, uncle?"
Jason tapped his fingers on the desktop, "Firstly, Laura is already a member of the third group. She’s handled many important projects and is one of the talents that the translation department focuses on training; secondly, whether she’s important or not has nothing to do with you. Did you ask her opinion about being your secretary?"
Jasper was momentarily speechless, "Uncle, you should know Laura is my ex-girlfriend. In the company, she’s the only one I’m familiar with. I’m asking this because I want to quickly get familiar with the company’s business. I hope you’ll reconsider."
Jason didn’t expect him to be so persistent, "Since you call me uncle, I have to criticize you even more. This is a company. It’s only your third day at work, and you’re already in my office, demanding to transfer your ex-girlfriend to be your secretary. What would your current girlfriend think if she knew?"
He paused, "Also, would your father agree if he finds out?"
Jasper didn’t expect his uncle to bring up his father to pressure him, and his courage dissipated instantly, "I understand."
Jason gave him a bland look, "Since you’re working at the company, do your job well."
Jasper’s attitude changed immediately, "Thank you, uncle, for your guidance. I’ll take my leave now."
Jason nodded.
Jasper turned to leave, but inside he was filled with resentment. He only blamed himself for having no power or influence now. If he were in his uncle’s position, wouldn’t the entire Aegis Group be at his command?
Just thinking of that day made every cell in his body boil with excitement...
After he left, Jason strolled to the window, lit a cigarette, his lips curling into a mysterious smile.
It seems Jasper hadn’t completely given up on Laura...
He’s asking for trouble, playing with fire!
Around 7:40 in the evening.
Laura Quincy and Nina Pierce finally arrived at the entrance of The Serenity Hotel. It’s one of Aethelburg’s five-star hotels, where even having a meal is rather expensive, let alone booking a large room that accommodates four tables.
Once inside the lobby, an attentive server approached to ask if they had made a reservation. Hearing they were headed to the Phoenix Flight Hall, they quickly led the two ladies upstairs.
Even from afar down the corridor, they could hear the chatter of men and women coming from the room. Most of the voices were familiar since everyone’s voices typically settled during high school and didn’t change much.
Laura and Nina had just reached the entrance when they heard a guy inside jeering, "Here come two more beauties!"
Laura scanned the room. It was packed, roughly thirty people or so, with quite a few guys and girls.
Some faces were very familiar, while others seemed a bit strange...
The class president, Jean Schultz, shouted with his loud voice, "Laura Quincy and Nina Pierce were the flowers of our class! Not only are they beautiful, but they also had great grades. I heard both got into prestigious universities after the college entrance exams. Now one works in translation, and the other is a doctor, true overachievers!"
Laura rolled her eyes at Jean, "Try saying a few less words; nobody would mistake you for a mute!"
Jean was famously lively in the class, mingling well with everyone and able to take a joke, so he was quite well-liked.
Being praised by the beauty, Jean Schultz just chuckled twice, then cheerfully pulled over a refined-looking guy and introduced, "The organizer of this reunion, Jonah Xavier. These two are Laura Quincy and Nina Pierce."
Laura finally took a closer look at him. He was much more composed than in his photos, with a clean and refined appearance, wearing silver metal-framed glasses that couldn’t hide his elegance.
"Hello."
"Long time no see."
They both spoke almost at the same time, but their words were different.
Laura didn’t have a strong impression of him, and since it had been many years, she politely said "hello," a standard greeting that couldn’t go wrong.
But Jonah Xavier’s words "long time no see" were filled with deeper meaning.
After all, they were high school classmates for years, so saying "long time no see" didn’t seem out of place. Soon, everyone was making small talk.
Jonah looked at Laura, "You’re in the translation career now?"
Laura nodded, "And you?"
Jonah’s voice was magnetic and elegant, "In the field of law."
Laura couldn’t help but look him over again, "Wow! Not bad! The law field is highly sought after now!"
Jonah lowered his eyes and smiled slightly, "It’s alright. Can I reach out to you for help with foreign documents that need translating in the future?"
At the end, he added, "Of course, with a payment."
Laura grinned, "Of course! We’re old classmates! I’ll give you a friendly price."
A hint of a smile flashed in Jonah’s eyes, "Alright!"
Before they could chat more, other girls came over to mingle with Jonah, "Counselor Xavier, can I come to you for help with legal issues in the future?"
Jonah smiled and nodded, "Of course."
"Counselor Xavier, which types of cases do you handle?"
"International litigation."
To his classmates’ inquiries, Jonah answered patiently, and his gentle demeanor was incredibly charming, causing many girls to see him through rose-tinted glasses.
Nina quietly pulled her friend aside, "Laura, I finally remembered! Remember I told you two nights ago that I’d heard of Jonah Xavier before? He’s a hugely famous lawyer, and he’s never lost a case! Plus, he co-founded a law firm with two partners, and several major companies are competing to hire him as a consultant!"
Laura rolled her eyes, "This stuff has already spread among our classmates, it’s no secret anymore."
Nina insisted, "I just remembered suddenly, do you remember the lawyer who helped you with your case before? I heard about Jonah from him, and our hospital recently had a case handled by him—those nurses talk about Counselor Xavier all the time, I didn’t pay attention back then, just realized it now."
Laura smirked, "So what? Are you interested in him now?"
Nina’s eyes darted, "I actually think Counselor Xavier might be more interested in you."
Laura pinched her friend’s arm with exasperation, "What are you saying? Counselor Xavier is gentle with every girl, look at his lips, they’re always slightly upturned."
Nina laughed mischievously, "Ha! You even noticed that! And you say you have no feelings for Counselor Xavier?"
Laura stumbled slightly, holding her forehead, "Any normal person would see that at a glance, okay?"
Nina pretended to look over at Counselor Xavier, "Where? I don’t see it. Clearly, you’re the one focusing on him closely."
Laura: "..."
She simply didn’t bother to argue, saying more would make it seem like she was covering something up.
Truth be told, she didn’t have any thoughts about Counselor Xavier at first, but after her friend mentioned him, she started paying a bit more attention to him.
During the meal, many girls insisted on sitting next to Jonah Xavier, making it so that his table was full of female classmates except for him.
Jean Schultz naturally wasn’t having it and personally arranged the seating. However, no matter what he did, no one was satisfied. In the end, amidst the pushing and shoving, Laura found herself seated next to Jonah Xavier...
A large group of girls strongly opposed, and Jean Schultz finally declared, "That’s final! If you keep fussing, how are we going to get dinner?"
With those words, many girls immediately quieted down.
But some still weren’t happy, so Jean had to add, "If you guys want some entertainment after dinner, stop causing a scene. Otherwise, we’ll just disband after eating."
His words were spot on, making everyone comply obediently with dinner, as continuing to fuss would indeed be unseemly.
Laura never thought she’d end up sitting next to Jonah Xavier, attracting envious and jealous gazes from many girls...
She really didn’t want to be in such a high-profile position!
Jonah seemed used to girls flocking to him. From college to now, he never lacked admirers. But ever since a college romance that went nowhere, he hadn’t found any girl who truly captured his heart.
This class reunion did bring him an unexpected surprise.
