CHAPTER 758: CHAPTER 757: LET’S HAVE A CHILD (7)

Chuxia reflexively glared at Shi Che, knowing full well that Madam disapproved of excessive displays of affection. Yet when she glanced his way, she was met only by the soft glow in Shi Che’s eyes, which prompted an involuntary curve at the corner of her lips and a fleeting sweep of sweetness through her heart. Feeling Shi Che’s hand wrapping around her slender waist, though, she instinctively tugged at his hand and shifted slightly away from him.

But no sooner had she moved than Shi Che’s body followed, sticking to her like gum that couldn’t be shaken off.

Mrs. Shi watched Shi Che and Chuxia’s subtle interactions with a trace of discomfort in her heart. But Shi Che’s infatuation with Chuxia was laid bare before her, and there was nothing she could do about it even if she felt unsettled. As long as Shi Che and Chuxia got married and had a child quickly, securing an heir, she could overlook the rest.

"Ahem." Mrs. Shi could only cough lightly to signal the couple in front of her. With so many servants watching, they should at least be mindful of appearances.

Hearing Mrs. Shi’s cough, Chuxia quickly came back to her senses and couldn’t help but shoot Shi Che another look. He caught her gaze, simply lifting the corners of his mouth before stopping his advances and turning his dark eyes toward Mrs. Shi.

"Mom, I’m sorry, I’ve been so busy since I came back that I forgot to bring Chuxia over to see you."

Shi Che’s voice was as deep and unhurried as ever, but Mrs. Shi immediately heard the underlying dissatisfaction in his words. It was as if he was displeased that she had summoned Chuxia alone, as if afraid she might do something to Chuxia.

Suddenly, Mrs. Shi’s mind flashed through many scenes, details that she had missed before since she did not know of Shi Che’s love for Chuxia. But now, it seemed there were quite a few clues—for instance, during the past three years, Shi Che rarely returned to the old residence. Yet every time she summoned Chuxia to scold her, he always managed to return in time.

Mrs. Shi couldn’t help but feel a bitter taste in her heart, powerless to change the fact that her son was clearly signaling Chuxia’s importance to him, determined to protect her. Otherwise, why would he kiss Chuxia so openly in front of everyone as soon as he arrived?

"I just haven’t seen Chuxia for a while and wanted to catch up with her, that’s all."

Mrs. Shi replied, adjusting her mentality slightly with happiness. It had been more than a month since Shi Che had come back. She looked up at him with a smile, "Now that you’ve also returned, why don’t you stay for dinner?"

Stay for dinner?

Wouldn’t that mean waiting for the doctor to come over?

Chuxia’s heart tightened unconsciously, her gaze flickering, wanting to say something but feeling it inappropriate to speak up directly. She could only silently hope that Shi Che would decline.

Since they were sitting close together, Shi Che could feel the subtle trembling of Chuxia’s body. His dark eyes swept over Chuxia without a trace, unable to see the expression in her eyes as she looked down. Yet he could sense her reluctance to stay for dinner.

Shi Che lifted his gaze slightly to meet Mrs. Shi and parted his lips with understated grace, his voice smooth, "No need, I still have things to do later. When I’m free after a while, Chuxia and I will come over to see you again."

Just hearing Shi Che utter the words ’no need’ made Chuxia’s heart, which had been lodged in her throat, finally settle down, and she couldn’t help but think to herself how she and Shi Che really did have a secret understanding.

Her hand couldn’t help but reach under the table to take hold of Shi Che’s.
