CHAPTER 486: CHAPTER 486 : THE FINAL WAR (9)

Like a wounded predator, Zhang Fengxi lunged, his fury a feral roar. The First Demon King, a cruel smile twisting his lips, met the charge head-on.

The Three Realm Spear and the Silver Yin Sword clashed against each other in a series of hits, sending bright sparks raining down onto the battling combatants. Zhang Fengxi fought valiantly, but every attack sapped his strength, making it increasingly difficult to even hold the spear.

Defeating the First Demon King seemed impossible at this point. All Zhang Fengxi could do was stall the fight as long as possible, giving Wu Shenxia, Jiang Muchen, Bai Ling, and Huang Taichen a chance to reverse the tide of the battle.

"Pathetic," the First Demon King commented with glee. "It feels like fighting a tiger cub. I almost feel sorry for you, Supreme General."

"Shut up," Zhang Fengxi hissed through ragged breaths as he sent another fireball wheezing past the First Demon King’s head. "You talk too much."

The First Demon King broke into a cackle.

"Indeed, indeed. Oh well. I thought that killing you directly would be too heartless, but it seems to be the best course of action. I am sure that you are dying to meet the Crown Prince again."

The demon dodged the Three Realm Spear before he slammed an elbow into Zhang Fengxi’s chest, knocking the air out of his lungs. His wicked blade sang a deadly song as he aimed to send the Supreme General plummeting to the Underworld in a single strike. But their clash was abruptly cut short.

But then, the world split open. A jagged tear ripped across the sky, unleashing a torrent of rain that slammed down on the combatants. In that split second, a bolt of lightning, a celestial executioner’s writ, arced down, targeting the very point where Zhang Fengxi and the Demon King clashed.

Flung skyward by the unexpected hit, Zhang Fengxi braced for impact. But instead of slamming onto the cold earth, he was snagged mid-fall by a pair of arms. Glancing down, he saw a magnificent flying dragon beneath him, its obsidian scales gleaming like polished mirrors under the flickering spears of lightning that streaked the sky.

Gasping for air, Zhang Fengxi turned around to meet the gaze of his savior. His eyes locked onto a pair of stunning almond-shaped eyes, their beauty both captivating and more than familiar.

It was the pair of eyes that Zhang Fengxi dreamed of for the past five years. He had seen a myriad of emotions passing through them; joy, grief, anger, disappointment, desperation.

"J... Jianbao?"

"No, Daddy, it’s me," the person replied. With a ferocious roar that split the sky, Lei Zhen lifted them both, soaring through the rain-soaked sky toward a safe spot.

Meanwhile, the downpour intensified, washing away the grime and horror of battle. Crimson bloomed across the battlefield, the blood of fallen warriors staining the earth into a macabre river.

"Ugh."

The unknown person lay Zhang Fengxi against a tree and wiped blood off his face.

Zhang Fengxi blinked at his savior several times before he mumbled, "Junjie...?"

"Yes, Daddy, it’s me," Xie Junjie replied.

"...."

Kneeling before him now was Xie Junjie, his form matured into adolescence, only a head shorter than his father. White robes with vibrant blue stripes adorned his body, while intricate markings decorated his cheeks and the backs of his hands.

The most striking feature, however, was the sigil of the dragon clan glowing brightly on his forehead.

"... How?"

"No time for explanations," Xie Junjie interjected sharply, cutting off his father mid-sentence. With urgency etched on his face, he materialized a sphere of crackling energy between his palms. In a swift motion, he pressed both hands against Zhang Fengxi’s chest.

A violent surge of power ripped through the Supreme General’s body. A torrent of black blood erupted from his throat, wracked by a series of coughs. Fear flickered in Xie Junjie’s eyes as he witnessed the expelled darkness. Without hesitation, he moved behind his father and channeled more spiritual power, purging the remaining taint from Zhang Fengxi’s system.

"Daddy, please be fine," Xie Junjie murmured with a trembling voice. "Please, please be fine..."

Although the karmic energy he absorbed allowed him to gain an older body temporarily, he had neither the strength nor the cultivation necessary to beat the First Demon King. In the end, all he could do was transmit all the energy he had to Zhang Fengxi.

Unfortunately, the battlefield remained a crucible of chaos. A demon screeched past, its jagged teeth bared in a predatory grin. With a monstrous blade raised high, it lunged towards Xie Junjie and the still-unconscious Supreme General.

A primal scream tore from Xie Junjie’s throat.

"NOOO!!!"

In a single, desperate motion, he ripped one hand from Zhang Fengxi’s back and unleashed a surge of energy. The demon, caught in the blast, was flung skyward like a ragdoll.

Another mouthful of blackish blood left Zhang Fengxi’s body, jolting him to consciousness.

"J... Junjie," he called out in a hoarse voice. "Enough."

"No," Xie Junjie insisted. "Only a little more. Daddy, please hold on..."

"No time," Zhang Fengxi rasped. "Junjie, you need to go... Leave here..."

He already lost Xie Jianyu too many times.

He could not lose any of their sons.

Otherwise, he would be too ashamed to face his wife in the afterlife.

His train of thoughts was interrupted when the First Demon King broke through several fighting demons and heavenly soldiers to reach them.

"Oh, how touching," The First Demon King, his bloody sword casually propped against his shoulder, offered a comment. "A son risking his life to rescue his father. Why don’t I send the both of you together into the afterlife?"

Zhang Fengxi’s eyes snapped open, unleashing a glare that sent a paralyzing chill rippling through the battlefield.

"Junjie, hold on to me," Zhang Fengxi slowly said.

Xie Junjie’s mouth fell open in confusion.

The Supreme General surged to his feet, a fierce determination hardening his features as he met his nemesis eye to eye.

"Watch me kill this bastard and avenge your mother."
