Dead at Heart
Inside 626
Samson saw those two men as well. His brows arched. However, he did not go up to them to offer his
greetings.
Instead, he leaned closer to Ariel’s ear and said, “Where are you going next? I’ve been here a few times, so I’m quite familiar with the ce. Should I show you the way?”
Ariel averted her gaze from the two men and responded politely, “That won’t be necessary. Commander Quinton will send someone to meet up with me. You should go ahead and take care of what you need to
do.”
She refused his help. Her tone was calm and polite as it usually was.
Samson didn’t insist on helping her with the directions. He passed an umbre to Ariel. “Take this with you. Should I give you a ride home once you’ve settled your work here?”
“You don’t have to wait for me.” Ariel didn’t exin much. She probably didn’t want to owe Samson yet
another favor.
Samson smiled and replied, “I’ll get going, then.”
After Samson left, Ariel stopped wondering about why Jayson was here today. She turned around and
headed off.
Jayson saw Ariel and Samson’s interaction. He had no idea what the two of them were discussing. He eventually averted his gaze and looked at Stanley. “You’ve heard about the material too?”
Stanley nodded. There was a look of approval in his eyes. “You’re truly wise and far–sighted, Mr. Larkin. By making that move a few years back, it resolved some of the technical difficulties we’re facing now.”
The Department of Defense would require the material for various purposes as well. It was exactly because the material was extremely valuable that the Merinian government had withheld information
regarding it for so long.
“You tter me. It’s a pleasure to be able to contribute to the development of our country’s research
sector. Also, it’s such a lovely coincidence to run into you while I’m here to discuss the details for the
partnership.”
Jayson walked alongside Stanley in long, confident strides. He remained humble yet dignified.
Stanley noticed those details from the way Jayson carried himself. Those were things he had hardly observed in other young people.
“Are you signing the contract today?”
Jayson shook his head. “We haven’t confirmed the partnership yet. There are still some details that we
need to discuss further.”
Stanley hoped they would be able to finalize things as soon as possible. He asked, “Are you going to meet Gary to discuss the details? I have some free time after this, so I cane with you as well.”
Jayson paused briefly before nodding. “Sure, of course.”
Stanley noticed Jayson was being a little hesitant. He smiled and asked, “What’s the matter? Are you perhaps unsatisfied with the conditions that have been offered to you so far?”
Jayson smiled faintly. “That’s not it. It’s just that… I have some other minor concerns. Partnering with the government is a crucial matter, and I wish that the process could be carried out smoothly. I hope we
won’t be hearing any unsavory rumors either.”
Those words halted Stanley in his tracks. “Oh? What kind of concerns are bothering you, Mr. Larkin? You can be frank with us. Gary and I will take them into consideration as well.”
Jayson turned his gaze toward Stanley. He had a calm look in his eyes. “Lately, Ms. Pryce has tried to approach me rather frequently. It hasn’t been that long since I announced to the public my rtionship
with Ariel.
“If rumors involving Ms. Pryce starts going around now, I’m afraid it may damage the image or reputation of all the parties involved. Also, I’m worried my wife may feel a bit upset if she hears those rumors.”
Stanley’s expression slowly turned grim as he listened to those words. He was silently seething.
He understood very well what Jayson was trying to tell him. Cecilia had been trying to get close to Jayson to the point that he felt was problematic.
Jayson’s expression remained unchanged. “I’m sure you’re aware the government views this partnership as a n of great significance. At the same time, I’m worried that we may encounter a situation during the partnership that could affect my wife as well. That’s why I’m feeling a bit troubled now.”
Stanley’s face darkened. Although Jayson’s tone was humble and polite, there was an underlying meaning behind his words.
Jayson would probably drop the talks for the partnership if Cecilia continued to cause him trouble. They couldn’t possibly let the partnership fall through, especially not when the government considered it as one of their top priorities at the moment.
Moreover, it turned out Cecilia was somehow involved in it. Stanley would naturally be held ountable for allowing something like that to happen.
“That’s very immature of Cecilia. Don’t worry, Mr. Larkin. I’ll talk to her and make sure she doesn’t act out of line anymore. We mustn’t let other issues impede the development of our country’s research sector. I’m sure you agree with that as well.”
Jayson chuckled softly. “You’re right. You’re a sensible and considerate man, Mr. Pryce. In that case, I
know I won’t have to worry much.”
