ACT 6: CHAPTER 33: 《FALLEN ANGEL, LUCIFER》

Lunaire and I went into《Cocytus》.

I rode Urzottle, racing across the floor, while Lunaire flew alongside us.

As expected from someone who had lived in the 《Cocytus》 for so long, Lunaire's choice of path was accurate.

We descended floor by floor in record-breaking time.

We defeated the monsters blocking our path in no time.

Even so, we never managed to catch up with the demons who had apparently descended into 《Cocytus》 ahead of us.

When Lunaire and I finally reached the 99th underground floor, three days had already passed since our intrusion.

「In the end, we’ve come all the way to the deepest floor. I wonder if everything is okay on the surface.」

「As time passes, the other members of ‘the 《Invisible Hand of God》' who went to retrieve the strategic pieces should come to support us as well. There's Pomera, Philia… and also Noble, so I'm sure the surface will be fine.」

Lunaire replied as she directed her gaze ahead of us.

「… Let's focus on our opponent for the time being.」

Ahead of us was the staircase leading to the 100th underground floor.

Unlike the previous floors of 《Cocytus》, this staircase was made of transparent crystal.

And beneath the transparent crystal, an endless void stretched out as far as my eyes could see.

The said demon should've been waiting beyond this point.

After descending the stairs, we proceeded straight along the crystal passage.

The giant throne I had seen when I was here before caught my eye.

However, the one sitting there, raising a large skull staff, was not Satan, the guardian of 《Cocytus》.

Sitting in place of Satan was a seven-meter giant man.

His skin was gray, with large curved horns on his head, and massive wings spread out from his back.

Chains dangled from various parts of his body, and large shackles were attached to both of his wrists.

However, the chains were broken in several places, and it seemed that his restraints were no longer functioning properly.

He resembled Satan, but compared to Satan, his form was more humanoid and overall too slender.

The man grinned when he spotted us.

「So you finally made it to this place. You're that otherworlder, Kanata, and Lunaire, the lich, huh? You took so long that I was starting to wonder what I'd do if Locklore got destroyed before you arrived.」

「… Who are you?」

「I am the great Lucifer. Does it make sense if I say I'm the fool who was in charge of this place before? I went too far and ended up sealed away in another dimension, but thanks to the whims of the higher being, I've been released like this. Hahaha! Looks like you've really messed things up, huh?」

The demon man… Lucifer introduced himself before laughing cheerfully.

As expected, he was the second higher-being's assassin following Luniman.

「If you were targeting us, you could have simply attacked us directly. For someone like you, the forces of 《Cocytus》 wouldn’t pose much of a challenge. So why exactly did you go out of your way to take over 《Cocytus》?」

「The esteemed higher being has decided to bring an end to this world, Locklore. And it's all because of you, Kanata Kanbara. My final role is to stir things up a bit before the curtain falls. Pretty cruel, isn’t it? Don’t you think so, Kanata?」

Lucifer shrugged his shoulders when he asked that question.

「Well, the reason I accepted the contract with that damn higher being I despise so much… Is because I wanted to tear Locklore apart in the flashiest way possible. I wonder why, though… There's just something about things people have painstakingly built up, that makes me want to completely ruin them.」

Lucifer's expression was oozing with malice.

His demeanor made it painfully clear that there was no point in talking to him.

「Kahahahaha! No matter how things turn out, you people of Locklore are nothing more than playthings in the little game of the overseers!」

「……The higher being must be seriously short on manpower. First Luniman, and now they send someone like you.」

「What, so you've already met that creepy guy? And beat him down on top of that… Hah! After acting all high and mighty, he ended up dying like a pathetic wretch. In the end, he was just a mere human.」

Lucifer stood up slowly from the throne and struck the floor with the butt of his staff.

Then, he bared his fangs and displayed a cruel smile.

「Alright then, let’s get this started! I'll show you that to this archdemon Lucifer, you’re nothing more than mere specks of dust!」

Lucifer spread his wings as he soared into the air.

I tightened my grip on the handle of my sword.

He certainly had the ability to back up his arrogance.

His level was simply way too high.

「Be careful, Lunaire. His level is over 8000」

I felt an overwhelming pressure emanating from Lucifer.

「Wow. It’s been a long time since I’ve faced someone with a higher level than mine. Even my level is only a little over 7000. That said, I have no intention of losing against such an uncouth man.」

My level was right under 5,000… And Lunaire's level was a little over 7,000.

It might seem a bit unreliable against Lucifer whose level was a little over 8000, but there should still be a pretty good chance of victory.

「Hahaha! You’re all just my playthings! Don’t break too easily now! Wouldn’t want the higher being in the audience to lose interest after all!」

Said Lucifer as he raised his black staff high.

「Become cinder! Flame Magic, 25th Rank《Stella Bazooka》!」

A spot of black flames flickered into existence at the tip of Lucifer’s staff, then started to swell endlessly.

「You must be kidding me…」

I looked up at the ceiling, and the words naturally slipped from my mouth.

The black flames at the tip of the staff had rapidly transformed into a massive fireball, stretching over 100 meters in diameter.

「Do your best to survive! HEHEHEHEHEHE!」

Lucifer swung his staff down toward us. The massive black fireball came crashing down toward us.

「UR!」

「AOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!」

A split second before I could call out, Urzottle had already kicked off the ground and leaped into the air.

Lunaire also leaped in the opposite direction from me to evade the fireball.

The massive fireball, 《Stella Bazooka》 unleashed by Lucifer, crashed into the crystal platform.

The crystal platform where we stood a moment ago smashed apart along with the explosion.

「Such ridiculous power…!」

Urzottle, who had leaped into the air, was thrown off balance by the blast of the explosion.

「Gwuuu…」

Lucifer came flying straight at me.

I was prepared, but he was much faster than me.

「Hahaha! Aerial combat is my forte! Now die!」
