CHAPTER 57: CHAPTER 57

The ride was silent. Triton’s mind was occupied with thoughts about his problem that the forger had promised to help him with.

He barely thought about the captured women and how they were being separated from their pack and families, all that he cared about was himself.

He took a deep breath and rode faster. The faster he got to Trevor, the faster he would also get what he wanted from the forger.

The night was already crawling towards them. The sun had begun to set, and they weren’t even close to the rogue fortress.

Sam slowed down on his horse and glanced towards Triton.

"We can ride through the night. We should stop and continue in the morning."

Triton took his words into consideration, even though he was bent on meeting Trevor that particular day. But seeing that the skies were still dark, and there was no sign of Trevor’s castle, he knew that it wouldn’t be possible.

They alighted from their horse and brought out their bags that they packed. After they set a fire to keep them warm through the night, Sam shifted into his wolf. The night was chilly, and the fur from his wolf would help him sleep better.

Triton squeezed his body and tried hard to shift into his wolf. His claws came out, but retracted almost immediately.

He breathed heavily as he tried several attempts which seemed futile. He gave up at the fifth try. Sam was already curled in his wolf form and sleeping.

Triton leaned closer to the fire to ease the cold. He sat on a rock and looked directly at the moon. His wolf stirred, but he still didn’t shift.

He inhaled deeply. This was a problem he had, but his wolf had never been so inactive until the last two weeks. He had to find a solution to his problem, and it was even worse that he was an alpha of Lycanthia. A leader couldn’t lead with a malfunctioning wolf.

Thinking of all these, he drifted into sleep.

He woke up to Sam taping him the next morning. Triton had never been a deep sleeper, maybe it was because of his fading werewolf senses that made him drift into such a deep sleep.

The sun rose faintly, but bright enough for them to navigate their way. They washed their faces with the water left and resumed their journey.

They rode without stopping, until they could see the bushes that led to the rogue king’s territory. They crossed the dense trees and the scattered houses in the rogue territory we’re now in view. They could see the topmost part of Trevor’s tower, and they quickly rode towards it.

"Triton! What brings you here?" Devon, who was the first to sight him, called out. Devon blocked the entrance, preventing them from having access. "You already caused a lot of trouble the last time, I doubt if Trevor wants to see you."

"We aren’t here to cause trouble. I just want to have a word with him and leave."

Devon gave them one last scrutinizing gaze before dismissing the curious rogues who were staring at the strangers.

"I hope the blight didn’t affect you." Devon said, and didn’t wait for their response before heading inside to get Trevor.

When he knocked on the door, Trevor didn’t answer at first. He was still naked in bed with Maria. Her body rested on his chest and they slept off together after the night’s encounter.

Devon had to knock a second time before they woke up.

"Hold on!" Trevor shouted and hurriedly put on his pants and shirt before reaching for the door.

He went outside and closed the door immediately because Maria was still naked on his bed.

"Triton is here. He says he wants to speak to you."

"And you let him in?" Trevor raised his voice while seething in anger. The last time Triton came here, it had resulted in a fight, and he wanted none of that to repeat itself.

"They said they are here for peace. If you don’t want to see them, I can tell them to leave."

"Them?" Triton asked with an arched brow. His mind had already raced as he wondered if Triton had come with the forger.

"Yes, Triton came with his beta."

"Hold on." Trevor said to Devon and went into the room to meet Maria.

She was awake, but still lying on the bed. Trevor sat on the bed and placed a kiss on her forehead.

"What happened? Are you strong enough to attend to duties?"

"It’s my brother. He’s here again. I have to see him. Just assure me you’d stay up here."

She nodded her head. "I will."

After that, Trevor followed Devon. He didn’t want the same incident of Triton claiming that Maria smelt like a woman he had sex with. That statement made Trevor extremely angered that day and it was what even led to the fight.

"What do you want? I’ve told you I’m not working for you anymore."

"You didn’t even bother to greet your brother. Is this how we’ve become enemies?" Triton spread out his hands for a hug, but Trevor simply shoved him back.

"I’m not here to fight. I just want to know why you’ve decided to abandon the deal. Your life is more important than the repentant man that you’re trying to be."

"I don’t want to capture more women for you. Do it yourself!" Trevor retorted.

Devon stood at a corner, ready for any fight that may break out between both of them.

"Trevor, I care about you. I want to see you live past the next full moon. Just ten more women and your curse is broken."

Trevor was still adamant. If there was anything holding him back, it was the fact that he had promised Maria that he wouldn’t do it again.

Then, he remembered the plan that he and Maria had.

"I’d do it." He lied. "But on one condition."

Triton’s face lit up. "What is it?"

"We must find out what the forger is planning."

Triton narrowed his eyes at Trevor’s statement. He was about to say something when that familiar smell clung in the air.

This time, he didn’t only recognize the smell, but she was there, walking towards them.

His jaw slacked slightly, and he called out her name. "Maria?"
