He was somewhat surprised when the girl suddenly adopted a serious look and wagged a scolding finger in the angel’s direction.
"If you want to prove that you are nice to Arisato-san, you will have to answer my last question."
It took him a full second to process just how bold that statement was. Uriel laughed out loud.
"You are not as innocent as you appear, are you?" Asia smiled slightly, "You also ask many questions."
The former priestess gazed earnestly up at the speaker.
"This is the last one, I promise."
"Very well," the Archangel still appeared amused, "Ask away."
Asia nodded before taking a deep breath.
"Do you think I can pray to Him?" her tone wavered, "Even if I am a devil?"
If Uriel was surprised, he did not show it. Instead, the seraph just looked thoughtful.
"That is not my place to decide. If it is anyone’s, it will be Michael’s. Still, if it is any consolation, I would grant your wish if I were him. But I would still be wary, if I were you. God just might take note of your special status and choose to speak to you."
That seemed to gain Irina’s attention.
"Isn’t... Isn’t receiving a message from God a good thing?"
"It is," Uriel beamed, "But alas, mankind have always misinterpreted the things He has said. The last time God spoke with any seriousness to humans was with Abraham, and that was a very long time ago. God intended to praise the man for his faith. For some reason or the other, Abraham mistook that message as a demand to sacrifice his own son. God was very much aggrieved and spirited himself into a nearby ram to interrupt the sacrifice. Abraham mistook that message as well and killed the ram with God still inside it. As you can imagine, He was not a very pleased deity when He returned back to Heaven," the Archangel’s face brightened, "But now you know why shepherds are more interested in their rams than their women. Think of it as God’s revenge against the descendants of Abraham."
"I’m not listening," Xenovia had covered her ears with her hands, "I’m not listening. I’m not listening."
"I do not know if this is blasphemy or the truth," muttered Irina.
"Why can it not be both?" the seraph asked cheerfully, "Oftentimes the truth is disguised as blasphemy by those who do not want you to learn it. If you do not believe me, we have a resident expert on the very subject," a gauntleted hand rose and gestured to the corpulent form of Valper, who had been slowly inching himself towards the nearest stairway. The man froze when all attention focused on him, and rotated his head to stare at them in horror, "Come, heretic, tell us the meaning of blasphemy. Enlighten us since you are so good at it."
The hand clutched into a fist. Valper let out a yelp of pain and surprise as he was suddenly torn from the balcony, his body exploding out from the gallery in a shower of wooden splinters. The former priest was dragged forcibly in their direction, arms windmilling comically as he flew through the air. The following thud as he landed at their feet was accompanied by the sharp, painful cracks of bone breaking.
Uriel peered down at the twitching heap. The smile he wore did not seem nearly as pleasant as before.
"Hello, Valper. You did not think we would forget about you, did you?"
"Lord Uriel..." the man wheezed out, "Please... Spare my life... I beg you..."
The request was suitably ignored.
"But what to do with you?" a finger tapped against the chiseled cheek in exaggerated thought, "My first inclination was to burn you. But I sensed that someone else here was most keen for his own revenge."
Behind the angel, Kiba’s form stiffened. Valper shuddered and hugged his arms protectively around his body.
"Spare me... I beg of you..."
"That is what they all say before they die," the Archangel remarked offhandedly, "At least say something interesting before you suffer the same fate."
The former priest’s eyes bulged out. They rolled in their sockets from sheer terror.
"I did it for God," he whispered.
It was the wrong thing to say. All pretenses of kindness vanished from the angel’s face in an instant.
"You dare speak His name, mortal, after what you have done?"
The plated hand gestured and Valper’s form flew from where he lay into the Uriel’s waiting grasp. Armored fingers curled around the priest’s neck, digging in like claws.
"You dare exist in His domain after the sacrilege you have wrought?"
The man dangled helplessly in the air, short legs kicking futilely above the ground. In response, the lips that had once smiled so easily, so readily, curled upwards in a fearsome leer.
"You dare imply that it was His purpose you served with your twisted deeds?"
The grip had become iron, tightening like a noose. The victim remained where he was, and continued to choke.
"God did not make you kill those children. He did not make you experiment on them then discard them like they were nothing. He was not the one on your mind when you sought to sate your blasphemous thirst for knowledge."
