Chapter 708: Chapter 708: Did You Hide Him?
However, things went beyond Chi Yue’s expectations.
After the host finished the opening speech, it was Fu Rongyin’s turn to come on stage, but Fu Rongyin was nowhere to be found—only Zhan Youyou appeared on stage.
While Chi Yue was still puzzled, Mr. Qi beside her had already called someone to find out Fu Rongyin’s whereabouts.
Chi Yue looked toward Mr. Qi, who was looking back at her.
“Was it your doing?”
Chi Yue frowned, “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“Where have you hidden him?”
As Mr. Qi’s expression grew darker, Chi Yue finally realized something, “He’s missing?”
Mr. Qi was a formidable presence in his day, and his anger now was still intimidating.
“Did you hide him?”
Chi Yue tugged at the corner of her mouth, “I was right by your side the whole time. Do you really think I’m capable of such a bold act?”
Mr. Qi scoffed, “Just now, you were gone for a few minutes.”
Chi Yue chuckled, “If I could hide him in just those few minutes, then there would be no need for this engagement party. Old Qi, perhaps you should ask Miss Zhan who disappeared for quite a while just now.”
Something seemed to strike Mr. Qi as he spoke sternly, “She has been most eager for the engagement to proceed normally; it couldn’t possibly be her.”
“Then could it be possible that she suddenly had a change of heart? Perhaps she saw you brought me here and feared I would disrupt their engagement party, so she simply prevented Fu Rongyin from showing up.”
Mr. Qi finally looked her squarely in the eyes, “Girl, don’t try to confuse me. I may be old, but I can still discern right from wrong.”
Chi Yue: “Weren’t you suspecting me just a moment ago?”
Mr. Qi finally had nothing more to say, shifting his gaze to Zhan Youyou who was calmly handling the situation on stage.
Given her capabilities, Zhan Youyou was indeed impressive, the way she handled things was just to his liking, but after all, she was still too young and narrow-minded.
Chi Yue also watched Zhan Youyou, wondering how long she could hold on.
If she wasn’t mistaken, Zhan Youyou’s other hand was clenched into a fist, and from her place near the stage, she even saw that Zhan Youyou’s hand couldn’t stop trembling.
The next second, Zhan Youyou looked towards Chi Yue.
Chi Yue caught a fleeting glimpse of her anger, which quickly returned to calm.
Another half-hour passed, and Fu Rongyin was still nowhere to be seen.
By now, Zhan Youyou on the stage could no longer hold it together, while Chi Yue let out a deep breath of relief.
No matter where Fu Rongyin was or why he hadn’t shown up, as long as he didn’t get engaged, Chi Yue considered today’s silent showdown a victory for her.
Chi Yue recalled a summer they had spent together during a class reunion, where someone had troubled her.
Fu Rongyin was there too.
When he heard someone was making it difficult for her and despite typically not playing games, he joined in and tricked all the classmates.
That night, as he walked her home, she asked why he helped.
Then he cupped her face with his hands and said earnestly, “With me here, no matter what, I won’t let you lose.”
…
Brought back to the present, some elders of the Zhan Family had already taken the stage to apologize, and some people began to escort guests out.
Seeing this, Chi Yue got up and said goodbye to Mr. Qi.
Mr. Qi, eager to find Fu Rongyin, waved his hand and let her leave.
Chi Yue walked with the crowd to the roadside, and Nan Yuan’s phone call came through, his voice sounding anxious, “I’ve turned the place upside down and haven’t seen him. Did he not come today?”
Chi Yue walked to a secluded place and, lowering her voice, replied, “He came. I ran into him in the restroom.”
“I checked there, no one. Where are you now? I’ll come pick you up.”
Chi Yue gave a rough location and after waiting for a while, a car stopped in front of her.
As she told Fu Hanyan about the situation, she didn’t notice the person in the driver’s seat, and got into the car.
As the car drove away, Nan Yuan’s phone rang again.
Chi Yue was startled, glanced at the driver’s seat, and froze in place.
