Flirted Wrong, Married Right
Chapter 523: I Was Careful
CHAPTER 523: CHAPTER 523: I WAS CAREFUL
"What’s going on?"
Evelyn Clayton’s expression suddenly became solemn. She got up, locked the door, and entered the office lounge.
Phillip Owens’s voice was deep, "Lars Alden’s wife is unattended, and it’s always been our police sending people to care for her. This morning, our sent caregiver noticed someone injected Ricadione into Lars Alden’s wife’s nutrient solution... It’s originally a medication for treating skin diseases, but excessive intake by some cancer patients can cause a drop in blood pressure and cardiac arrest, leading to death."
Evelyn Clayton shivered slightly, "So, is she okay?"
"We’ve already arranged a hospital transfer," Phillip Owens sighed lightly, "We’ve also sent people to investigate who did it, but we have no results yet. Now, we can’t rule out that someone is trying to murder."
Hearing this, Evelyn Clayton’s fingers curled slightly.
Someone wants to kill Lars Alden’s family, which means perhaps the person behind it is already wary.
So, how much does that person know now?
This feeling of the enemy lurking in the shadows is uncomfortable. Evelyn Clayton took a deep breath and said, "Officer Owens, if I suggest transferring Lars Alden’s family to my side, would it be possible?"
Phillip Owens was silent for three seconds, "It’s hard to say, but I can try for you."
"Thank you," Evelyn Clayton said slowly, "If there’s any trouble, please contact me anytime. If it involves money issues, feel free to reach out to me."
Phillip Owens agreed straightforwardly. Before hanging up the phone, he suddenly said, "Evelyn Clayton, if the hospital transfer is successful, I don’t want any problems happening with Lars Alden’s family at your place, understand?"
Evelyn Clayton understood his concern and said solemnly, "Officer Owens, rest assured, I swear by my deceased father and mother, there will be absolutely no issues."
After hanging up the phone, just as Evelyn Clayton came out of the lounge, someone knocked on the office door.
She went forward to open the door and saw Rhys Jacobs, "What’s wrong?"
Rhys Jacobs hesitated, "Director Clayton, Director Grant from Harvestide Holdings is here..."
Evelyn Clayton was slightly stunned, reacting after a moment, she headed out, "Where is he?"
"In the reception room."
Upon arriving at the reception room, she saw James Grant standing up from the sofa, looking at her with a smile.
"Why are you here today?" Evelyn Clayton closed the reception room door and, just as she approached, James Grant grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms.
The man’s embrace was warm and broad, and James Grant’s smiling voice came from above her head, "I just wanted to see you. I happened to know Yara Reagan isn’t here, so I thought why not seize this time to meet you, wouldn’t it be a pity otherwise?"
Just having answered Phillip Owens’s call, Evelyn Clayton was somewhat unable to gather her energy facing James Grant.
But she restrained the fatigue in her eyes and showed a faint smile just moments before James Grant glanced her way, "Yara might come back soon."
"Then will you leave with me?" James Grant’s eyes were filled with laughter, seemingly with unspeakable affection. That gentleness was something Evelyn Clayton had never seen before.
Her throat felt tight, a moment of stagnation flashing through her eyes.
Evelyn Clayton looked away subtly, glancing at a three-tiered wooden lunch box on the table, "Did you bring food?"
"You’ve lost a lot of weight recently, so I thought maybe you haven’t been eating well," James Grant didn’t ponder Evelyn Clayton’s momentary discomfort, pulling her to sit down, "I specifically got someone to make this, it’s all dishes you love."
Chapter 414
When the lunch box was opened, it contained stir-fried spinach, corn and shrimp, braised pork, and Evelyn Clayton’s favorite potato chicken stew.
They were all homemade dishes, but delicately prepared, and the temperature was just right.
James Grant rolled up his sleeves to serve soup for Evelyn Clayton. She watched his every move, not knowing why, her heart felt like a knife cutting her.
She had never seen James Grant like this before, patient, gentle, full of care for her.
"West Lake beef soup, your favorite." James Grant placed the soup bowl in front of Evelyn Clayton, his long eyes curving slightly, full of smiles.
Evelyn Clayton didn’t move for a moment, calming the unspeakable weight and pressure inside her, her fingers curled slightly in her palm.
James Grant finally noticed Evelyn Clayton’s discomfort, his smile paused, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing," Evelyn Clayton’s lips slightly parted, "When you came, did you make sure no one was following you?"
James Grant laughed, "Afraid our underground romance will be discovered?"
He ruffled Evelyn Clayton’s hair, "Don’t worry, I was careful, no one followed me."
Evelyn Clayton picked up the bowl and sipped the beef soup.
She gradually calmed her emotions, making herself appear without any signs of abnormality.
After finishing the soup and during the meal, Evelyn Clayton seemingly casually said, "The day after tomorrow is the release of Gam’s new clothes. Afterwards, there’s something I might need you to help with."
James Grant couldn’t be happier if Evelyn Clayton needed him for something, he asked warmly, "What is it? Tell me."
Evelyn Clayton chewed slowly and prepared herself mentally, "Do you remember the driver who kidnapped me with John Jacobs before?"
Unexpectedly, Evelyn Clayton brought this up suddenly, James Grant was slightly stunned, then nodded as he understood, "I remember."
"At that time, the driver didn’t really intend to kidnap me, he was forced into it. If it weren’t for him, I might not have been able to untie the ropes; it was his momentary kindness that gave me a chance..."
Evelyn Clayton put down her chopsticks and looked steadily at James Grant, "He told me he had a bedridden wife with cancer who needed money for treatment, which forced him to join John Jacobs in the crime. I promised him I would help take care of his wife."
James Grant frowned slightly instinctively, "You taking care of her? But he didn’t really save you, even without the fire, perhaps he still wouldn’t choose to release you."
"I know. But he’s quite pitiable, and I promised him, so I want to help him as much as I can." Evelyn Clayton slightly raised an eyebrow, "Actually, I don’t need you to do much, I just hope you can help transfer his wife here. Do you know of any hospitals with better privacy protection that could accommodate her?"
James Grant’s expression showed disagreement, but due to Evelyn Clayton’s earnestness, he hesitated for a moment without speaking.
"I hope you can understand me," Evelyn Clayton said seriously, "Don’t refuse me, nor disclose this matter, alright?"
With these words, James Grant seemed to yield a bit.
"Alright," James Grant seemed rather helpless, "How could I refuse you?"
Evelyn Clayton smiled slightly, leaned in, and kissed James Grant on the lips.
James Grant’s eyes deepened a bit, he held the back of her head and kissed deeply.
As their lips and teeth intertwined, Evelyn Clayton slightly opened her eyes and looked at James Grant, who seemed engrossed in the moment, her long lashes trembled slightly, unsure what she felt inside.
