CHAPTER 554: CHAPTER 554: ARRANGING A MEETING

On the way to the ward, Elias Sherman briefly explained the situation of Lars Alden’s wife to Evelyn Clayton. Evelyn felt somewhat uncomfortable listening.

Once they reached the door of the ward, Elias stopped walking.

Evelyn also halted, looking inside through the window—

The light in the ward was somewhat dim, and the woman lying in bed seemed to be asleep.

But she didn’t sleep peacefully, her eyes tightly shut, her brows furrowed, beneath her pale, somewhat unnatural skin, almost translucent blue veins could be seen.

At a glance, it was evident that she was already a critically ill patient, relying solely on medication and chemotherapy to maintain the most basic of life functions.

Evelyn watched silently for a long time, then withdrew her gaze and softly asked Elias, "What did you mean earlier when you said her mind isn’t quite normal?"

"She’s rarely awake, most of the time she’s in a stupor. When she wakes up, she’s very quiet, but refuses to communicate with anyone. If she wakes up at night, she’ll just stare emptily, often shedding tears."

Elias spoke with a heavy voice, "A psychiatrist once saw her and said it’s a form of self-isolation."

Evelyn wasn’t sure how she felt.

Back when John Jacobs had kidnapped her, listening to the struggles in Lars Alden’s words, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of compassion.

Evelyn had not liked this soft-hearted aspect of herself before.

But now, she found it increasingly self-consistent, thinking that it’s not really a big deal.

Because, she never turned a blind eye to anyone’s suffering, never became what she despised most.

"So should she receive some psychological treatment?" Evelyn tentatively asked, "Or rather, if her emotional knot could be untied, she might come out of this closed state and improve?"

Upon hearing this, Elias turned serious, "At the time, the psychiatrist said, her state isn’t really considered mental illness in the traditional sense. To put it simply, it’s a form of emotional low, coupled with her already compromised physical condition. Dealing with both at the same time—ordinary psychological treatment would be useless for her."

Evelyn understood, "So, they say only the person who tied the knot can untie it. If we could resolve her emotional knot, she might get better, right?"

Elias looked steadily at Evelyn for a moment, "So, Miss Clayton, what do you think her emotional knot is?"

Evelyn responded without hesitation, "Her husband."

Seeing Elias’s thoughtful gaze, Evelyn slowly continued, "After knowing that Lars Alden was imprisoned for attempted kidnapping, she plunged into self-isolation. If it were just simply resenting her husband for leaving her with no support, I feel it wouldn’t be to this extent... There’s only one explanation, that is, she believes she brought misfortune upon Lars, causing him to end up in jail."

"What she loathes is herself, so she’s unwilling to communicate with others."

Elias nodded slowly, "That’s very possible..."

Evelyn exhaled gently, "So I think perhaps having her meet Lars would help a lot. Given her current state, if this self-isolation continues, it might also affect her treatment for leukemia."
