Chen Ying carefully examined it and concluded that this dog should be accurately described as a third-generation wolf.

A naturally propagated third-generation wolf, moreover, of Mongolian wolf lineage.

"Who brought this little guy here?" Chen Ying looked up and asked the person in charge, "This is a hybrid wolf-dog offspring, and you can see it has pretty good genes. If I'm not mistaken, this little guy is of Mongolian wolf bloodline."

Although its fur was quite dirty and messy, the "pointy snout, elongated facial features, protruding nose tip, sharp and upright ears" were obvious Mongolian wolf traits.

However, its demeanor and some habitual actions were very dog-like, and it did not reject being with other dogs, suggesting it had probably been living with dogs since birth.

"Found it; a couple of tourists picked it up near a roadside garbage bin, and it was just a pup..." The person in charge suddenly didn't know how to proceed—was it a wolf or a dog?

He paused and continued to brief Chen Ying, "The tourists found it on the prairie, surrounded by several stray dogs. When they discovered it, it was hiding in a dirt pit, shivering, looking like it was ill. Coincidentally, the tourists had a dog in their car too, and they couldn't bear to leave it, so they took it back and fed it some pet medicine. But their dog was very opposed to this little guy, so they had no choice but to bring it to us."

In hindsight, the tourist's dog probably rejected this little guy because of its wolf lineage.

Chen Ying hesitated and decided not to schedule surgery for the little guy. He directly called the local police canine unit, to see if they were interested in this dog. If they weren't interested, the Police Dog Base in Meng Province, or their Police Dog Base in Sichuan Province, would likely be interested.

The trainer who answered the phone was immediately excited.

Of course, they wanted a dog with good genes for police work, but their unit wasn't authorized to raise dogs, so they would have to report to their superiors if they were interested.

Chen Ying wasn't very familiar with wolf-dog breeding. Previously, when Duoduo and the female wolf's cubs were evaluated, they were selected by the Police Dog Training Base, but he didn't know the exact criteria, nor did he look into it.

However, upon seeing this puppy, he had a hunch that if they neutered it, they would regret it.

Five minutes later, the trainer called back, saying their colleague from the Police Dog Base would contact him shortly to arrange a time to come and assess the situation.

"Alright, I'll wait for them to get in touch."

After hanging up, Chen Ying instructed the person in charge to isolate the puppy and wait for the base personnel to assess it.

"This is really fortuitous." The person in charge was a Buddhist and recited a scripture before personally confining the puppy in a small cage in the isolation room.

Before the operation, Chen Ying received a call from the base; they were already on their way and would arrive in about an hour and a half. They also asked Chen Ying to send them the exact location.

Concerned that he might not be done with the surgery by then, Chen Ying sent them the location and the phone number of the person in charge, so they could get in touch directly.

After finishing the neutering surgeries for the other dogs and performing an excision on a female dog suspected of having pyometra, when he came out, he saw a police car parked at the office entrance.

Chen Ying took off his surgical gown and washed up before going to the office to meet with a few colleagues from the base.

"Dr. Chen, I'm Dongzi from the Police Dog Base. We've examined this puppy, and from its appearance and physical traits, it meets our selection criteria, but whether its obedience is suitable will require further observation. We've discussed with the person in charge, and we will take this puppy with us. Even if it doesn't work out, it will still live within our institution, and maybe its descendants will be suitable."

From the veterinarian's perspective, this puppy's overall condition was excellent. Especially with the keen sense of smell and hearing characteristic of the Mongolian wolf, it inherited the wolf gene from an unknown parent, with senses sharper than those of regular dogs.

As demonstrated when the base colleagues assessed, a slight noise from behind a wall caught the little guy's attention instantly.

Of course, this was just a preliminary check, and specific data would need careful measurement back at their station.

While they were talking, it was time for the second feeding of the day.

Two workers were dragging a cart full of dog food from the storeroom, ready to mix leftovers and feed the dogs.

At this moment, the puppy suddenly stood up, its eyes fixed on the dog food on the cart.

"Don't eat that now; when we get back, we'll give you your own special meal, so don't compete with your companions for their food."

Dongzi patted the puppy's head, but it shook its head, took two steps forward, nostrils twitching, and lips parted slightly, revealing four sharp canines.

When the worker placed the last bag of dog food onto the cart, the puppy dashed forward and started barking fiercely at the worker.

Dongzi's expression changed; this behavior wasn't exactly appropriate...

Chen Ying, however, felt the puppy wasn't trying to snatch the food but was instead trying to stop the worker from feeding it.

He walked over to the puppy, stopping the worker.

"Hold on a moment." Then he crouched down, looking into the puppy's eyes, "Did you notice something? Was he doing something wrong?"

Chen Ying pointed at the worker hauling dog food, and the puppy shook its head, "Woof, not that, can't eat it."

"Not that?" Chen Ying muttered, his gaze shifting to the dog food bags, "Can I open a bag to take a look?"

Uncertain, the worker looked at the person in charge.

"Go ahead; it's fine since we're opening them eventually anyway." The person in charge swiftly grabbed scissors to cut open the bag.

"Sir, we can't cut it open; it will spill, making it impossible to take away later."

The two workers were a bit unhappy; this would increase their workload.

"This is easy to handle. Don't you have a wheelbarrow? Just put the bags in here and cut them open. I'll help you push them over later."

Dongzi seemed to notice that the puppy wasn't begging for food and stepped out to speak for Chen Ying.

Seeing the comrades in uniforms come out, the two workers had no choice but to place the bag of dog food on the wheelbarrow, undo the stitching, and grab a handful of dog food to place in front of the puppy.

The puppy stepped back, refusing to eat, but kept barking, clearly agitated.

Chen Ying went over, picked up a piece to sniff it in front of his nose. It didn't smell good, likely filled with too much technology and harsh ingredients, but there wasn't any acrid smell.

When the puppy saw Chen Ying about to put the dog food into his mouth, it anxiously stood on its hind legs, slapped the piece of dog food away, and barked at him not to eat it.

There wasn't a special inspection facility in the village; to confirm if the dog food was problematic, it had to be sent to the city for testing.

Chen Ying frowned, pondered for a bit, and asked Dongzi if he could help collect some samples to send to the city for inspection, with the results sent directly to him.

Dongzi also wanted to know what the matter was and readily agreed, even asking colleagues to go to nearby restaurants to get some food sampling boxes to pack the dog food.

"Little guy, come here. Tap whichever bag you think is problematic."

Chen Ying patted the puppy's head and neck, asking it to determine if the food on the trailer outside was all problematic.

The puppy seriously sniffed each one, finding only one out of the remaining five bags on the trailer to be problematic.

Dongzi and his two colleagues kept samples from the problematic bag and the previously opened one, marking them on the sampling boxes.

Chen Ying opened the storeroom door again, asking the puppy to sniff around. This was a bit tough, as the storeroom was piled full, with narrow aisles and mixed items, making the smell inside quite unbearable.

After a round of searching, the puppy found three more bags. The rest couldn't be moved.

Dongzi and his team dragged out the three problematic bags, placed them together with the other two, and put them in a separate spot.

Altogether, there were five problematic sample boxes, plus two randomly opened bags that were fine.

"Then we'll go now. I'll send these over for inspection right away. Don't use those bags for now; use the ones from this side."

The person in charge looked grim. If he still couldn't understand the situation, he'd be a fool.

After Dongzi and the puppy left, the person in charge punched the table.

"Those bastards, this is murder!"

A dog's life is a life too. He didn't dare imagine the consequences if there really was an issue with the dog food.

Chen Ying also looked troubled. It was his unexpected discovery of the puppy's condition that allowed it to escape from being neutered, revealing the problem with the dog food.

But what if he hadn't come? Would the puppy have already been operated on, and the problematic dog food already consumed by stray dogs?

Perhaps they wouldn't all die, but faced with mass diarrhea and vomiting symptoms, should they be treated or not?

If treated, how could hundreds of dogs be managed? If not, should they just watch them wail to their deaths?

Chen Ying felt a tightness in his chest, a breath stuck, unable to go up or down, making him want to hit someone.

Due to the incident, Chen Ying didn't rush to leave. He rested at the person in charge's house overnight and received the inspection report from Dongzi the next day, followed immediately by a call from Dongzi.

"Dr. Chen, I've reported this matter to our superior. They contacted the police station, and someone will come to investigate soon. My superior and I will also come, and we should be there in about an hour. Don't get anxious if there's any issue, wait till we arrive."

Just a few minutes after hanging up, the police station sent someone over.

They wanted to take the problematic dog food and repeatedly asked if there were any other problematic dog foods to hand over.

"I'm not sure about this, after all, it wasn't us who found the issue. It was the police dog at the Police Dog Base that discovered the problem, and then samples were sent for testing. They'll be here soon. Why don't you wait a bit?"

The black-faced officer taking notes was angry, asking why they reported it to another unit instead of directly coming to them.

Chen Ying remained silent, and the person in charge slammed the table, shouting back directly.

"I'm not saying you shouldn't use police dogs, but consider the local police station too..."

Chen Ying directly dialed Dongzi's video call, pointing the camera at the officer, "Here, I've connected to the Police Dog Base comrade's phone, speak to him."

Turning again to the person in charge, "Brother, call the township head. We can't handle this, let the township send someone over."

Upon hearing Chen Ying's words, the black-faced officer's face turned even darker. Meanwhile, the other officer who came with him stood aside with a notebook and law enforcement recorder, staying silent.
