CHAPTER 38: CHAPTER 37: WU MING’S FIRST MISSION

"Sister Yang... you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?"

A few minutes later, He Zhan and others arrived on the scene, seeing Sister Yang chatting with Wu Liang while holding a string of pig feet. They realized they were too late.

Since Sister Yang was here, it meant the supernatural event had probably been taken care of by her.

What a wasted trip!

"Relax, relax, the performance still counts towards your team’s record. I’ll be staying at this kid’s house for a while, so remember to notify me if anything comes up." The woman said nonchalantly, patting her chest.

Wu Liang stood stunned beside her.

"Wait! When did I agree for you to stay at my house?" He was utterly miffed, not yet living off mooching himself, but now someone else was going to mooch off him.

This is outrageous...

"I’ll pay rent, a hundred a day."

"Welcome anytime!"

Watching the two clowns banter as if it were a play, He Zhan exchanged looks with the Awakened accompanying him, silently pulling out his phone for a glance.

A message from the top management of Chengyang City’s Paranormal Handling Department read —

"If you encounter Yang, make sure to steer clear. Her mental state has been a bit off lately, and it’ll probably be ten days before she returns to normal."

Boss! You’re late with the info!

Now two problem characters were staying together!

Bzzz—

Just while everyone was chatting, He Zhan’s phone rang again.

After taking the call, his expression instantly turned serious. He quickly responded, "Mm-hmm, okay, I’ll be right there!"

After hanging up, He Zhan turned to Wu Liang.

"Inform your brother that we need to rush to People’s Square immediately; there’s a supernatural event happening over there too. We need to hurry for a rendezvous."

"Uh, sure."

Wu Liang quickly ran over to Li Guoqiang, pretending to call and inform the non-existent "Wu Ming," but actually speaking firmly to Li Guoqiang:

"Li, People’s Square also has a supernatural event. Some Awakened are heading there soon. You should follow them. Since this side is finished, leave the remaining interview to me!"

"Alright!"

Li Guoqiang was thrilled to add another score to the day’s achievements.

Without hesitation, Wu Liang agreed to stay behind for the remaining tasks, and Li Guoqiang felt safer here since it was already dealt with.

He then followed He Zhan and others, getting into the police car heading to People’s Square.

Sister Yang planned to head home first to freeze the pig feet in the fridge, leaving Wu Liang with just the other police personnel at the slaughterhouse.

"Hoo~ Finally, they’re gone."

He sighed in relief, making an excuse to shoot some B-roll at the slaughterhouse, shaking off the police personnel to go in alone.

Then from the Ghost Compendium, he took out a puppet.

"Honored to live in this world for you. Need to die?"

The familiar dialogue surfaced, with the Puppet Ghost transforming into Wu Liang’s likeness.

"Stay here to finish the interview and search the slaughterhouse for the fierce ghost’s main body that Ms. Yang just dispelled. Find it, and it will be your snack."

Wu Liang had already experimented previously with the Teapot Ghost; even if a fierce ghost was banished and its body burst into fragments, his minions could still consume those fragments for enhancement.

Since they’re here, they can’t leave empty-handed.

Having the Puppet Ghost substitute for him and digested fierce ghost fragments was indeed a win-win!

"Snack? Sure, boss! Leave it to me, I’ve got this!" Puppet Ghost patted his chest, full of joy.

Hearing its promise, Wu Liang put on Mist Ghost’s sunglasses, transforming into "Wu Ming" and sped away.

This was Wu Ming’s first assignment!

He had to make a brilliant impression!

Little did Wu Liang know, as he took a step away, the Puppet Ghost hunched down like a dog, sniffing frantically, as if discerning the location of the fierce ghost’s fragment by smell.

A nearby law enforcement officer walked in just in time to see him in action.

Observing "Wu Liang" crawling and slithering on the blood-stained slaughterhouse floor, everyone was terrified, with only one thought in mind—

Is this kid mentally okay?

......

About ten minutes later, the real Wu Liang, using Mist Ghost’s ability to hide on a car roof, neared People’s Square, unaware of Puppet Ghost continuing to tarnish his image.

During the journey, Wu Liang was pondering the events at the slaughterhouse.

"Interesting, the previous hypothesis seems a bit off. Ms. Yang isn’t part of Team One?"

Her words hinted that she seldom dealt with supernatural dispellation, clearly ruling her out as Team One’s leader responsible for fierce ghost banishment.

More crucially, He Zhan, as Team Two’s leader, wasn’t angered but resigned to her behavior.

"Meaning, Ms. Yang’s status in the department is higher than Captain He? Why does she take such an interest in me?"

Though Wu Liang considered himself good-looking, he didn’t narcissistically think himself astonishingly handsome.

There must be a reason she’s approaching him!

"Yo, we’re here, off the car!"

With his hitch ride stopped by traffic police ahead, Wu Liang was notified of People’s Square’s supernatural event, causing temporary road closure, and hopped off.

Unperturbed, he traversed between officers and vehicles, everyone tended to their business as if he were invisible.

Within two minutes, Wu Liang spotted four people discussing outside the extensive People’s Square.

Some traces of blood marked the entrance, so the fierce ghosts must be wandering inside the square.

Adjusting his tone and recalling Wu Ming’s persona, Wu Liang strode confidently forward.

Swoosh—

A sudden mist appeared not far in front of He Zhan; everyone instinctively braced for it.

Seeing this, He Zhan immediately realized Wu Liang’s brother had arrived, stepped forward, smiling, "No need to panic. This is the new member I mentioned — Wu Ming."

Just as he finished speaking, Wu Liang dispersed all mist except on his face, nodding to the official Awakened, "Facing a supernatural threat, I’ll be quick. My name is Wu Ming, and my ability is releasing perception-blocking mist, effective against most fierce ghosts."

Upon hearing this, all eyes lit up.

Such mist was valuable!

Blocking fierce ghost perception meant safer investigation and search within supernatural influence areas!

Just as He Zhan and others were about to speak up, a fresh bloodstain appeared out of nowhere at the entrance—more public members had fallen victim inside.

He Zhan’s complexion changed seriously, saying, "No time to detail our abilities now. Priority is entry to assess victim situations."

Saying this, his right hand’s palm eye suddenly opened.

As before when accessing the fierce ghost-sealed TV station office building, everyone felt an opening tear.

With mutual acknowledgment, Cannon led the charge inside, followed closely by the Priest and Liuyun, leaving Wu Liang to enter last alongside He Zhan.

The square was largely an open space.

This supernatural event seemed bound for direct confrontation with fierce ghosts.

Every state heightened with tension.

Facing fierce ghosts was akin to online game raids against bosses; teamwork was paramount, a slight mistake could lead to casualties.

"Ah!"

Just as they entered, a scream echoed from behind them...
