CHAPTER 144: CH 144: THE PRECIOUS NECKLACE - PART 6
"A room for three, please."
Irielle smiled at the innkeeper as she ordered to book the rooms. The innkeeper gave her a deep, searching look with her tired eyes before she looked back to see Lysera and Kana behind her.
The innkeeper opened her mouth, likely to ask Lysera if she wanted more than one room or not, since her company did not look friendly (mainly Lysera), but then decided not to ask.
After all, she was not paid enough to care—just enough to do her job.
"A room for three? Sure, I can do that. Luckily, we have one room left. But due to the auction, it will cost you a little more. If you don’t want it, you can leave now."
The female innkeeper smiled her ’customer smile’ as she handled the paperwork.
Irielle kept smiling at the female, and her unnerving smile did not slip even once from her face. It made the female worker uncomfortable, and the ’customer smile’ on her face slipped.
"Sure, I will pay extra. Please hand me the keys."
Irielle spoke in a way that sent shivers down Kana’s spine. Suddenly, she no longer wanted to ask Irielle what she was going to do.
The innkeeper gave Irielle the keys, and Irielle handed them to Lysera and Kana.
"You both should head up. I just need to have a small talk with the innkeeper about our stay here. Don’t worry, it won’t take long."
Irielle’s expression clearly stated that she was going to do more than just ’talk’ with the innkeeper, but a part of Kana told her that it was of no use to try and interfere in this conversation.
Moreover, even Lysera placed a hand on Kana’s shoulder and steered her away. But not even a minute later, she pulled her hand back, almost as if she had been burned by this interaction.
"Lysera, what’s going on—?"
Kana asked with a confused expression. When she turned to look back at Lysera, she noticed that her expression was going through various phases. It seemed as if she was having a hard time controlling herself.
But in the end, Lysera decided not to speak up, and she gave Kana a slight smile instead.
"Don’t worry about it. I am fine. I just got startled because I thought I saw a spider on your shoulder."
That was a lie, and both Lysera and Kana knew it. There was no way someone like Lysera was afraid of a spider. But they both chose not to say anything—more so because it did not seem like Lysera wanted to speak about this topic.
’I would rather have Lysera speak to me about what is troubling her. But I also do not want to push her beyond her limits. For now, I should give her some space and see what happens.’
Kana sighed before she allowed Lysera to lead them to their room.
Irielle joined them almost an hour later, and she looked like a cat that had gotten the cream. Kana had a feeling it would be better not to ask her what happened, so she did not open her mouth.
Even Lysera looked at Irielle and decided that it would be better not to ask her what happened.
"What? Are you not going to ask what happened? Tsk, you both are so boring."
Irielle looked a little offended at the lack of interest Kana and Lysera showed in her. She pouted, and Kana finally decided to show her some attention.
"Are you alright, Irielle? Did the conversation go well with the inn worker?"
Kana asked with a slight smile, and the smile on Irielle’s face widened a lot.
"Yup! I had a nice conversation. In the end, I got the innkeeper to see eye-to-eye on the matter of the payment, and they promised to refund half of our money because they made a mistake."
Irielle looked proud when she spoke, and Kana had a feeling that it would be better not to ask her what happened.
Something about Irielle’s expression made her feel like things were going in a direction she did not expect.
"I see. That is... wonderful news. For now, come inside and rest. We will head out to look around the city more in a little while."
Kana called Irielle inside, and Irielle skipped as she walked over to her bed.
On the way there, she gave Lysera a look that made Lysera look away with an uncomfortable expression on her face. But by the time Kana paid attention, whatever tension that was between the pair was already gone.
They ate lunch in their room, and it was not long before Lysera needed to leave to report for duty.
Lysera looked at the clock in the room with a tired look on her face before she pushed herself off the bed to stand up.
"I should head out now. I need to let my team know that I have arrived here. They must be waiting to hear from me."
Lysera sounded unhappy to be leaving, but her duty was not something she could abandon.
Kana understood that, but the disappointment that washed over her made her bite her lip in annoyance and irritation. Still, she took a deep breath to not let her emotions show on her face.
"I see. I understand. Make sure you keep yourself safe and come back quickly. There is a lot I want to do with you."
Kana’s words made Lysera pause, and she looked back at Kana for a minute. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words escaped her mouth.
Lysera seemed to be debating whether she wanted to say something or not.
Irielle came over as well while Lysera was making this decision and decided to place her head on Kana’s shoulder and give Lysera a look.
That finally snapped Lysera out of the daze she was in, and she quickly turned her head away and started to walk out.
"I will try to come back as soon as possible with the news about the auction."
With those words, Lysera left the room.
