CHAPTER 161: WHO ARE YOU CALLING A JINX?

"Enough!"

Sensing the situation escalating, Chief Xie stepped forward. Her eyes flashed with annoyance as she looked at Elder Lin and the rest of the elders. She knew that these women had lost their minds because of their greed and arrogance, but this was simply too outrageous!

Everyone turned to look at Chief Xie, whose expression was getting worse by the second. She stepped forward and said to the elders, "Who was the one who told you such a foolish thing? Who is the one spreading such nonsensical beliefs in the tribe? Come forward!" Her voice resonated in the ground violently, shaking the entire ground as well as the hearts of the clansmen. They all looked at one another and turned to look at Chief Xie with a worried look in their eyes. This was the first time they had seen Chief Xie so angry.

They had no idea what to do, now that the chief had lost her temper with them.

"Chief—"

"Do you even know what Ruan Chanchan has done for the tribe before making such accusations?" Chief Xie didn’t let Elder Lin continue as she took out the salt that Ruan Chanchan had prepared for her and placed the pouch containing the salt on the boulder that was sticking out in the middle of the ground. She said to Elder Lin, "Take a look and see what this is."

Suddenly, Elder Lin had a sense of foreboding. She knew that there was something amiss, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She pursed her lips and reached out to pick up the leather pouch; inside of it was a white crystalline powder which smelt like—

"Salt?"

"That’s right, salt," Chief Xie said grimly. "Ruan Chanchan is not possessed by an evil spirit. Instead, she is blessed by the beast goddess. The beast goddess knew that our tribe was in danger, and she blessed Ruan Chanchan with the knowledge of how to summon salt. She is out here putting herself in danger by offering her blood as a sacrifice to bring us this precious salt from the land of the gods, and you all are accusing her? Are you not afraid that the beast goddess would get angry with our tribe and revoke the blessing that she had given us?"

Chief Xie was truly angry this time around. This was not a small matter. Ruan Chanchan was not just a simple tribe member; she was the messiah sent to their tribe by the beast goddess. The beast goddess saw how difficult the situation of their tribe was and helped them by sending Ruan Chanchan. Who would have thought that the elders would offend Ruan Chanchan like this? What if the beast goddess got angry with their tribe for treating the messiah sent by her so rudely?

Elder Lin was dumbstruck. She raised one shaking finger and tasted the salt inside the leather pouch. The smooth and vivid taste made her swallow all the words that she wanted to say against Chief Xie. She wanted to refute Chief Xie’s claims of Ruan Chanchan being the messenger of the beast goddess, but how was she supposed to do that when the evidence was right in front of her?

"And that is not all!" Chief Xie knew that Ruan Chanchan didn’t want to attract too much attention to herself, but Chief Xie realised that if Ruan Chanchan wanted to live her life in peace, then she needed to take a stand for her. She took out the instant noodles and placed them next to the salt. "The beast goddess gave Ruan Chanchan this as well. Do you even know what kind of magical thing this is? You all just need to add hot water to it, and you will be able to eat the delicacy of the land of the gods!"

Ruan Chanchan: "..."

"Xiao Xi, will the gods be upset with me?" While she didn’t feel embarrassed when she was saying all those lies, Ruan Chanchan was now feeling embarrassed after hearing Chief Xie repeat those lies to the rest of the tribe. She didn’t know about Elder Lin, but she had a feeling that the beast goddess would start feeling upset with her for sure.

"There is no need for you to worry, darling. The gods don’t pay attention to such things; unless these lies change the trajectory of this world in a rather major way, no one will pay attention to them. What’s more, it was the beast goddess who suggested Xiao Xi become your partner. She will not intervene over this small matter," replied Xiao Xi. Only then did Ruan Chanchan feel a bit better.

At least she was not in danger of spontaneously combusting. She had once been burnt alive, and the feeling was not good. She would rather not suffer from the same pain all over again.

Elder Lin looked at the instant noodles and muttered, "Impossible." She didn’t want to believe that such a thing was even possible, but how was she supposed to refuse the truth when the evidence was right in front of her? She had never seen these instant noodles before in her life. And from the confused looks on the faces of the other elders, she was certain that they had never seen it either.

"Say it." Chief Xie spoke with her hands behind her back. She narrowed her eyes and stated, "Go ahead and tell me that the evil spirit that is possessing Ruan Chanchan’s body wants to feed us and fatten us all up before chopping us all to pieces. A rather long and troublesome process, but of course, if it’s you... It’s possible."

As soon as Chief Xie finished speaking, Elder Lin’s face turned ashen. She wanted to retort but had no words to say anything; in the end she could only spit on the ground and return to her cave in disgrace. Thoroughly humiliated, she was so thoroughly humiliated that she had no face to see anyone.
