CHAPTER 166: THE ONE IN THE SHADOWS

Xie Daiyu understood what Ruan Chanchan was trying to tell him, and his face filled with embarrassment. He said in a low voice, "I am sorry; I got too excited."

"There is no need for you to apologise." Ruan Chanchan waved her hand and said to Xie Daiyu, "I told you this because I want you to go look for the materials for making linen while hunting." Ruan Chanchan knew that she could purchase linen stalks from the supermarket, but she wanted to keep that ace card to herself until someone tried to snatch her business in this world. There was no need to bring the big guns out yet.

"What do you want me to do? I will turn the entire forest upside down for you," Xie Daiyu promised eagerly. If not for the fact that he couldn’t leave right away, he would have gone to look for the material that Ruan Chanchan wanted him to search for.

She sighed and quickly said, "There is no need to turn the entire forest upside down; I just want you to look for plants that can make linen." She understood that the mer was getting overly excited and immediately spoke to him in a placating tone to ease his excitement.

"What kind of plant do you need?" Upon hearing Ruan Chanchan’s request, Xie Daiyu immediately asked.

"It won’t be that difficult to find them," said Ruan Chanchan as she tried to find some information in the novice pack that she had received as a reward. She knew a little about the linen plants in her own world, but Ruan Chanchan knew that the same couldn’t be found in the beast world. She took a glance at the overview, and once she saw the image of the linen plant that was printed on the information, she relayed the same information to Xie Daiyu. "You should look for a plant that has fronds with light bluish tips. The stalks of these plants won’t be too thick, and you can easily tear them into thread-like strips. The finer the better. So just look for a plant like them."

"A plant with fronds that have blue tips?" Xie Daiyu frowned, as he had never seen such a plant before.

"That’s right, only this plant can be used for making linen at the moment. As long as you can find this plant, we will be able to make linen," said Ruan Chanchan with a nod. Even the greatest wife couldn’t cook a meal without a pot of rice.

"I understand." Xie Daiyu’s eyes flashed with a hint of determination. This linen was the key to their tribe getting better and stronger; there was no way he was going to let this opportunity slide.

He didn’t dare to entrust this opportunity to someone else. It was better to lead the team on his own and keep an eye out for this plant on his own.

Ruan Chanchan looked at the excited and determined expression on the face of the mer beside her, and suddenly, she couldn’t help but think that the mer was really cute. In fact, the more she got to know him, the more she realised that the mer was getting cuter and cuter. She didn’t even know when she started finding him cute, but Xie Daiyu had succeeded in touching her heart.

She reached out and touched Xie Daiyu’s head. Her action was instinctive; thus, the second she touched him on the head—both of them paused. Xie Daiyu stiffened, and so did Ruan Chanchan. She pulled her hand away from the top of his head while Xie Daiyu lowered his head even further, a smile adorning his lips.

While the two of them were lost in their own world, they had no idea that there was someone who was eyeing this little sweet moment of theirs.

The next morning, Chief Xie moved all the edible mushrooms that could be eaten to the square and then announced to the tribe that this information was given to Ruan Chanchan by the beast goddess and that these things could be eaten. To prove her claim, she roasted the mushrooms and then ate them right in front of the entire tribe. As expected, nothing happened, and when the people of the tribe realised that these mushrooms could be eaten, they turned excited because more edible things meant more stock for winter.

In addition, Ruan Chanchan also taught how to make steamed eggs and omelettes to the tribesmen.

These things were really popular among the men, mers, as well as the babies. The young cubs really liked the taste of the steamed eggs and demanded more of it; seeing this, many of the mers were so happy that they nearly shed tears of joy. After all, they knew how hard it was for the babies to eat anything or even like the meals that were given to them.

"If you do not know which mushrooms to eat, then it’s better to let Ruan Chanchan double-check it for you. But do not eat poisonous mushrooms just because you find them edible. I have placed the edible mushrooms on the boulder in the middle of the square. If anyone eats any other mushroom other than the ones on the boulder, or unless identified by Ruan Chanchan, then you cannot blame Ruan Chanchan for what happens to you," warned Chief Xie. She swept her gaze at the supporters of the elders, as she knew that these people were the ones who were more than capable of hurting themselves for the sake of getting Ruan Chanchan into trouble.

While Chief Xie was looking at the helpers of the elders, she had no idea that she was looking at the wrong people. The person who was about to cause trouble for her was neither of them.

It was someone whom Chief Xie would never doubt, not even in her wildest dream. In fact, even if someone told her that it was him, she might not believe them!
