Harry Potter: Becoming a Study God
Chapter 395: Haley [2in1]
The warning magic in the corridor was triggered, and Wade knew that "he" was about to arrive.
He immediately stepped into the operating room. "Madam Pomfrey, I'm almost here."
Madam Pomfrey instantly understood. Looking at the wounds on the girl's body, she regretfully said, "Just a little bit more."
Although she said that, she decisively pulled open the window.
Wade glanced back. The girl's gruesome wounds looked almost the same as when he had first entered, but in reality, they were now only superficial injuries.
"No, this is just right."
The two of them mounted their brooms and flew out of the window one after the other. Wade cast a Disillusionment Charm and was preparing to observe from nearby, when suddenly, a loud crash erupted above his head.
A large piece of metal spun down, nearly hitting Wade as it fell.
Both of them broke out in a cold sweat from the shock. They exchanged glances and then turned their brooms upward.
On the rooftop, a plane had just taken off. On the ground, those who hadn't managed to board were in a frenzy—some were pleading desperately, while others were cursing furiously.
"I'm an important researcher! If you don't take me with you, Zeke, I swear you won't have a good ending when you return!"
A man shouted loudly. He seemed to have bells hanging on him, jingling incessantly, which caught Wade's attention.
The helicopter had already gained altitude, but the cabin door was not fully closed yet. Inside, several people were seated.
In the deafening roar of the rotor blades, the man's shouts probably sounded no louder than the buzzing of a mosquito—completely inaudible.
However, the man with a ponytail sitting by the cabin door saw the furious, hate-filled face below. After a brief moment of thought, he turned to say something to the person next to him.
A moment later, a pitch-black gun barrel extended from the cabin door, aiming straight down.
Wade quickly grabbed Madam Pomfrey, and the two of them dived sharply and took cover along the side of the building.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat...
A rapid burst of gunfire rang out, sending chunks of concrete flying. The barrage lasted for over ten seconds before it finally stopped.
Only when the sound of the helicopter receded did Wade and Madam Pomfrey cautiously fly upwards along the exterior wall.
Against such a high-rate-of-fire, powerful weapon, Wade had no confidence that a Shield Charm would hold up—or if it could, for how many shots.
Reaching the rooftop, they found that most of the people who had been below the helicopter were now dead. The few still alive were barely clinging on.
Even though Madam Pomfrey had a healer's heart, she did not act out of kindness to save anyone this time. Instead, she simply frowned at the departing helicopter.
Even the most isolated wizards had at least heard of Muggle transportation like this.
They knew that an airplane could be ten times faster than a flying broomstick. Its massive and heavy steel structure made most spells ineffective. Moreover, if the distance was too great, the power of spells would diminish significantly.
Only a few wizards, like Grindelwald, could bring an entire city to its knees with their magic. Madam Pomfrey was certainly not one of them.
—Even though a helicopter is relatively slower, catching up to it is nearly impossible.
Madam Pomfrey thought so, and the ponytailed man, Zeke, and Veronica, who were on the plane, thought the same.
They had a much deeper understanding of what wizards were capable of compared to ordinary people.
Seeing that the plane had taken off smoothly, Zeke finally let out a sigh of relief. Looking at the soldiers collapsing on the island like ants, he turned to Veronica and said:
"Good thing we escaped in time. The wizards that showed up this time were like monsters. I have no idea what kind of person Apton ended up provoking."
Deceiving others starts with deceiving oneself—at this moment, he had already convinced himself that the man with glasses, Apton, was a traitor.
Veronica forced a smile but asked anxiously, "Why didn't we bring Dominic? You know his research is highly valued. Leaving him behind will be difficult to explain to the higher-ups."
"Do I even need to spell it out?" Zeke tugged at his collar and said helplessly, "The helicopter only has so much space. If we brought him, we couldn't take the research materials. If we took the materials, we couldn't take him. We had to sacrifice one."
"Oh…"
—Is there really not enough space on the helicopter?
Veronica hesitated for a moment, glanced around at the packed aircraft, and nodded in agreement.
If Dominic hadn't been sacrificed, the one left behind might have been her.
Yet, right beside them, there was actually an empty seat—one that both of them subconsciously ignored.
That seat was originally reserved for Dominic, but at this moment, it was occupied by an invisible person.
Snape sat there expressionlessly. The corner of his cloak lifted slightly, as if trying to poke at Veronica's gemstone ring, but Snape quickly pressed it down.
Veronica couldn't see any of this, so she simply said, "You're right. But with such heavy losses this time, even if it was Apton's fault, you and I will surely be punished as well."
"Nothing we can do about it. Those big shots sitting in their offices never understand the struggles of those of us on the front lines." Zeke complained while pulling out his phone.
"I'll contact someone first. At worst, I'll just be exiled to another deserted island."
Snape glanced over and saw that Zeke was calling someone named Hugo.
…
The helicopter flew higher and farther. Madam Pomfrey patted Wade on the shoulder. "Stop looking. They won't escape. The Ministry of Magic will definitely track these people down."
"Mm…"
Wade responded, but he didn't take his eyes off the aircraft.
He remembered once seeing a helicopter broken in half. Judging by its position, it might just be…
Boom!!!
The aircraft in the sky exploded into a ball of fire. The fuselage split into two pieces, spiraling down from high altitude.
Madam Pomfrey snapped her head around and stared at the sky in shock.
At almost the same moment, a loud "Pop!" erupted beside them. Both quickly cast the Shield Charm and the Barrier Charm, only to see that the sudden intruder was none other than Snape.
His body swayed, unable to keep his balance, and he collapsed to the ground.
"Merlin's beard, Severus! What happened to you?"
Madam Pomfrey hurriedly supported him, asking anxiously.
Snape's upper body was intact, but his lower legs were covered in blood, with exposed bones and torn flesh, as well as severe burns.
Madam Pomfrey immediately began emergency treatment, summoning several potion bottles from her medical kit.
"I was just on that plane…" Snape said through gritted teeth.
Madam Pomfrey's hand trembled, and half a bottle of potion spilled onto Snape's leg, making him shudder from the pain.
"You made that plane explode?!" she asked in horror.
"No." Snape endured the pain and said, "I originally planned to track those people, but while they were reporting over the phone, the person on the other end suddenly said, 'Goodbye,' and then… the plane just exploded…"
He paused, looked at Wade, and somewhat awkwardly gave a rare compliment:
"The cloak is quite impressive."
If not for that cloak, Snape might have been caught in the sudden explosion with no chance to Apparate to safety.
Madam Pomfrey finally let out a sigh of relief.
Then, she poured the remaining half-bottle of potion onto Snape's other leg, making the Potions Master's face twitch in pain.
Next, she handed him a potion for burns. As soon as she uncorked it, a pungent and bizarre smell assaulted their senses.
Snape had no choice but to pinch his nose and drink it down, while Wade stood nearby, struggling to hold back laughter.
After all, Snape himself is the biggest supplier of potions to the school's hospital wing. Ever since Maze games became popular, the number of injured students had skyrocketed.
In response, Snape had deliberately made the already awful-tasting potions even worse, causing students to constantly complain.
And now, the boomerang had come right back at him.
"Wade." Madam Pomfrey handed him a potion. "The girl downstairs still needs some final treatment. I was planning to check on her later, but now…"
"I understand." Wade took the potion. "I'll take care of it."
The deep cuts on Snape's legs had healed rapidly, but the burns were proving to be more troublesome.
Just as Wade was about to leave, Snape called him back—
"Wait. Take the cloak with you."
The metal cloak uncurled itself from Snape's body, drifted down gracefully, and—almost as if showing off—spun around Wade once before settling on his shoulders.
The cloak was also scorched and covered in black ash, with traces of blood on its edges.
Wade pointed his wand at it, and as soon as the cloak became clean and pristine again, he draped it over his shoulders, mounted his broom, and flew back the same way he came.
As he approached, he heard his own voice.
Wade waited patiently outside the window for a moment. Only after "himself" left the room did he climb back in through the window.
The two guardian magical dolls at the bedside looked at him in shock, then turned to glance at the doorway, clearly confused.
"Shh—"
Wade raised a finger to his lips, motioning for them to stay silent, and walked over to the bed.
Earlier, he had poured a healing potion over the wounds, but since it had been modified for Muggle physiology, he had also reduced the dosage to match the girl's weakened state.
As a result, Haley's recovery was not progressing well, and fresh blood was still seeping through her wounds.
Wade sighed.
"Her healing is too slow… My potion-making skills are still so far behind Professor Snape's…"
Both could create potions effective for Muggles, but Snape had mastered the art of preserving rapid healing properties without causing harm to the body.
As Wade poured a new potion onto the wounds, they began to heal at a visibly accelerated rate.
He softly chanted a healing spell, moving his wand slowly over her body to further speed up the treatment.
Finally, the last wound faded away, leaving the girl's skin restored to its original smooth and unblemished state.
With a flick of his wand, the blanket lifted itself and gently covered Haley. The operating room was also magically cleansed, and the metallic scent of blood was whisked away by a small whirlwind, carrying it out through the window.
At that moment, an Obscurus had begun to rage out of control, making the entire building tremble, as if it could collapse at any moment.
Wade did not rush outside to face the Obscurus head-on, knowing that his own magical abilities were not strong enough to overpower it directly. Instead, he stood by the operating table, waiting for Haley to wake up. ʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇsᴛ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀᴛ NoveIFire.net
--Would this girl be able to calm the rampaging Mabel?
Truthfully, Wade wasn't sure. He doubted that even Dumbledore himself held much hope for this plan.
However, the fact that Mabel, even in her out-of-control state, had insisted on searching for Haley—despite the high chance that she might already be dead—showed that their bond was far from ordinary.
Even if their plan failed, it wouldn't matter.
At the very least, they saved a life.
And with the Hogwarts professors, Dumbledore's burden would be eased, making things far better than if they had been fighting alone.
Suddenly, Wade felt a strange surge of magic.
He rushed to the window and saw, in the distance, an entire street twisting unnaturally, as if a vortex had formed in midair.
With a loud "BANG", four or five wizards appeared on the street, clutching an old, rusty iron bucket.
As soon as they landed, they were stunned by the overwhelming black whirlwind raging before them. Realizing the situation, they frantically drew their wands, sending flashes of light toward the Obscurus.
More and more wizards began to appear—some holding a tattered boot, others a wide-brimmed hat, and even one clutching a chipped flowerpot—all suddenly emerging from different locations.
The churning black mist expanded wildly, enough to engulf an entire street, then shrink down, small enough to slip into a building like a wild dog.
It vanished and reappeared in an instant, moving as fast as lightning, never engaging the wizards in a direct fight, only darting around in chaotic escape.
As it fled, it continued to wreak havoc, smashing buildings on either side. Any soldiers or researchers who lay on the ground were mercilessly torn apart.
The street lay in ruins, and blasts shattered chunks of the black mist, but as long as its core remained intact, the Obscurus continued to rampage. It morphed into a monstrous form, lashing out at anything or anyone that Mabel resented.
Among the battling wizards, Wade even spotted Cornelius Fudge—the Minister of Magic.
He hadn't expected Fudge to show up in person.
Wade wasn't sure if Fudge had anticipated the disaster awaiting him, but all he saw was the Minister shouting at Dumbledore before pulling out his wand and joining the fight.
The wizards worked together and struggled to contain the Obscurus. Thin blue-white beams shot from their wands, devouring the raging entity, forcing it to contract from all directions.
Only by controlling the Obscurus and locating its core could they eliminate this dangerous being.
The black mist constantly shifted into monstrous forms, roaring in agony, with flickers of black and crimson light pulsing within. It looked both deadly and sinister, yet it couldn't break free.
Maybe Haley wasn't even necessary—perhaps the wizards could resolve this themselves.
But Wade knew that the reason Dumbledore had not taken down the Obscurus immediately, and had even allowed Wade to reverse time to find Haley, was because he pitied the tormented girl.
Suddenly, Wade heard a faint moan behind him.
He turned around and saw Haley, lying on the operating table and opening her eyes slowly in confusion.
She stared blankly and asked, "Where am I? Who are you?"
"I'm a friend of Rita Skeeter. Mabel and I came to find you," Wade said gently. "How are you feeling?"
"...I'm okay," Haley murmured.
She sat up groggily, rubbed her eyes, and looked around in bewilderment.
"I... I remember..."
She glanced at the surgical instruments nearby and shivered as fear flashed across her face.
But after touching her chest, she let out a sigh of relief.
"I think I had a nightmare," she said with a sheepish smile. She looked around the room, even bending down to peek under the bed, then whispered, "Where's Mabel?"
"She—"
Wade was carefully choosing his words, when suddenly—
A burst of gunfire echoed in the distance—
