HxH : Saiki Kusuo’s Ordinary Days in the Zoldyck Family
Chapter 31 31: Trip to the World Tree (3)
[That helps a lot.]
"It was my master's decision, sorry for the trouble. Do you have any ability to climb the tree?"
[None at all. Zero. I'm just a normal person, so please use your ability to carry me up.]
Saiki Kusuo held out his hand. Since someone reliable was offering help, he wasn't going to pretend to try.
Kite: [A normal person? Ging wouldn't care this much about just anyone. This boy must be special. I need to stay alert.]
"Alright, I'll carry you. Please relax, and trust me—I won't drop you," Kite said politely.
He was way too polite—no need to be this formal. Still, this guy might end up looking after his younger brother later. But that was a thought for another time.
Saiki Kusuo was very good at relaxing. The moment Kite picked him up, he could feel just how relaxed Saiki was. That kind of trust caught him off guard and moved him a little.
But Saiki Kusuo was only doing it because he knew even a slight move from him could go out of control and possibly get Kite killed. So he had to stay calm. Completely calm.
Seeing Saiki Kusuo already had someone to help him, Hisoka used his ability and jumped up first. Chrollo wasn't going to fall behind either—now that he knew there was treasure, of course he wanted to see for himself.
Twenty minutes later, all three of the younger powerhouses had made it to the top!
Kite was the slowest since he carried Saiki Kusuo, and when they reached the top, he was still surprised at how fast the other two had climbed.
At the top was a huge bird's nest. A large bird perched on the edge, watching the three as they arrived.
"Don't worry. Birds on the World Tree won't attack people. It's only watching us because we've stepped into its nest. As long as we don't do anything stupid, we'll be fine," Kite explained.
Saiki Kusuo made it to the top and saw the treasure already laid out on the ground. Hisoka and Chrollo were crouched nearby, inspecting it like thugs.
"So, which one is the treasure you're here for? You came with a goal, didn't you?" Chrollo guessed. They hadn't known each other long, but he could tell that Saiki Kusuo wasn't someone who usually wanted anything. And since he was the one who gave the clue to this treasure, it made sense for him to pick first. After that, maybe Chrollo could get a piece for himself.
But which item was it? Without touching them, Saiki Kusuo couldn't tell. Ging hadn't given him any hints. Should he touch each item one by one? Or maybe Kite knew something?
Saiki Kusuo looked at Kite.
"I don't know what it is," Kite said right away, raising his hands. "But I do know there's one thing here you absolutely must not touch."
Saiki Kusuo: That's probably the one I need.
Hisoka: "Can't touch it? Makes me want to touch it even more, hehe."
Chrollo: "Interesting. Which one is it?" He wanted to know, but carefully.
Kite scanned the pile, his mind already picturing what it looked like.
Saiki Kusuo used telepathy to find out—it was a wristband. A black wristband. So black it looked like it could swallow light. It looked like it was made of stone, with some strange, barely noticeable patterns on it.
Because of how plain and dark it looked, it was hard to spot, but Saiki Kusuo had sharp eyes. He saw the edge of it right away, crouched down, and grabbed it.
There were two other people here who might want it too. No way was he going to let them fight him for it.
The wristband—on it goes!
Without hesitation.
The moment Saiki Kusuo put on the wristband, he suddenly felt the powers inside him, which had stayed calm for so long, start going wild—like a lit bomb right before it explodes, everything was surging!
This isn't right. Was this a trap!?
His face changed. He tried to take off the wristband, but flames caused by his powers going out of control were already rising beneath his feet.
No, no, calm down!
Luckily, his powers were still under control. The flames only burned part of the nest below him before everything froze and vanished again.
The flash of fire and ice came and went. But the nest under his feet was gone, and he lost his footing, falling straight down from 1,700 meters in the air!
"Saiki?!" Chrollo was the first to react. Some kind of chain shot out from his hand. Hisoka stretched out his Bungee Gum. Kite's clown was still drawing a card.
No one else jumped after him—1,700 meters was no joke.
But none of the chains or Hisoka's gum reached Saiki Kusuo.
His powers had already gone out of control. Even though he tried his best to hold it back, anything within three meters of him was instantly melting into nothing from the raw force!
Saiki Kusuo quickly realized the real danger wasn't falling—it was that when his powers kept spiraling out of control, even trees four meters away would get hit and snap! If that happened, Chrollo, Hisoka, and Kite would fall too!
If the main characters of Hunter x Hunter died like that, wouldn't that make him a massive criminal!?
Teleport! Go somewhere safe! Somewhere absolutely no one else would be!
—Somewhere in the Dark Continent that Nanika had taken him before!
He vanished mid-air, teleporting. The other three saw it clearly.
"This is bad... If il-chan finds out the pink kid fell 1,700 meters…" Even Hisoka looked a little uneasy.
"He should be fine. He probably teleported somewhere safe, but not nearby." Chrollo scanned the area from above. Everything looked normal. There were no crashing sounds.
What triggers Saiki Kusuo's teleport? If he could teleport from that far away, why didn't he just teleport up here earlier? Was it because of me, or Hisoka? Chrollo started thinking deeply.
"I told him not to touch it, so why would he…" Only Kite looked completely lost.
"What's that wristband really do?" Chrollo asked.
"It works differently for everyone. No one knows what will happen after putting it on. But to put it simply, it forces all your powers to go out of control, no exceptions. Someone like Dr. Saiki just vanished—first time seeing that. Is teleport one of his powers? I hope he's safe... and I really hope he takes it off soon…" Kite looked uneasy, like he'd caused some huge disaster.
…
At the same time, somewhere in the Dark Continent, a massive explosion happened. Strange-colored land and giant beasts—none of them survived within the blast zone.
After a short chaotic burst of power, Saiki Kusuo finally came to. He looked up and saw a pair of bloody legs still standing in front of him. The blood was just starting to pour out.
...He'd killed it.
Yare yare, sorry about that, mystery monster.
But things weren't over after just one explosion. Saiki Kusuo stayed completely still. He could feel it—if he moved even a little, a giant canyon might split open beside him, or a hole might tear through the sky if he just looked up.
He had no idea how to fix this. But then, something amazing happened.
