CHAPTER 179: HENG JIN, THE TIMELY RAIN, HAS ARRIVED (REQUEST FOR MONTHLY TICKETS)
Ever since the parking garage was locked, Jing Shu felt that something was off. She regretted not installing bulletproof windows on her electric car, while her mind quickly ran through the list of still-living enemies. Hmm... a bit too many, but very few could pose a threat.
It’s more likely that someone locked the underground garage deliberately, to force us to take the upper route and ambush us.
Regardless, Jing Shu, acting cautiously, had the entire family lie down in the car and drove slowly. The most imminent threat at the moment was guns. The probability of Hand Grenades and bombs was low, as they were controlled items, yet she couldn’t exclude the possibility entirely.
Although her family felt Jing Shu was making a big fuss over nothing. After all, who would go out of their way to ambush someone when the law was so strict? And nowadays, almost no family even had a kitchen knife; how could they lay an ambush? Even if someone did have a gun, in such darkness and heavy rain, they’d be lucky to hit the car.
But the family still did as Jing Shu instructed; better safe than sorry. The car couldn’t stop moving forward just because of a speculation. Nor could she call Li Yuetian and say, "I suspect someone wants to kill me, so please send someone to protect me." It also wouldn’t do to simply not go home. For this reason, they took a big detour, but even Jing Shu saw no abnormalities.
It seems I was overthinking.
Just as they rounded the corner and were about to arrive home, all the nearby surveillance seemed normal. But at that moment, the car exploded with a BOOM, and the family’s screams immediately filled the vehicle.
Jing Shu’s heart pounded, yet at the same time, her eyes became unusually bright; the world seemed to slow down in that instant.
She saw something resembling a Hand Grenade hurtling towards her. Without the slightest hesitation, she arranged four rows of boulders in the Magic Cube Space and launched them instantly.
At such a critical moment, she had to send it flying back, whether it was a Hand Grenade or not. Hand Grenades were known to leave nothing alive within a 15-meter radius, and Jing Shu dared not gamble with her family’s lives.
In the instant of the explosion, Jing Shu knew her prediction was correct: it was indeed a Hand Grenade! In her previous life, she hadn’t seen a gun in ten years. But in this life, not only had she frequently encountered them, she’d now even been "honored" with a Hand Grenade attack. Just perfect.
Fortuitously, thanks to the quick reflexes she had honed by practicing with the Magic Cube Space, she managed to intercept the Hand Grenade mid-flight. It exploded before impact, preventing secondary damage to the already overturned car!
"Jing Shu, Jing Shu, don’t be rash! Let Dad go out with you, it’s dangerous out there!"
"Hurry and see what happened! I’m here!" Mrs. Jing’s voice rang out.
"I’m trapped and can’t get out; pull me out!" Mr. Jing struggled for a while but to no avail.
The family inside the car was still in shock. Jing Shu was the first to climb out. She ran towards the direction from which the Hand Grenade had come, summoning poison Bees from the Magic Cube Space. She sent them swiftly through the air, ready to launch her last batch of boulders at any second in case of a second Hand Grenade.
Unfortunately, Jing Shu only saw one person: a young man near a window, affected by the blast. He had an almost supernaturally handsome face but was now bleeding from all orifices, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"So, you saw them after all," Jing Shu murmured softly. He must have seen the sudden appearance of the boulders.
The man fell backward, straight as a board.
After climbing through the resident’s window, Jing Shu examined the man. She noticed a bowl-sized, unhealed scar on his shoulder blade, along with various other wounds. It seemed he wasn’t long for this world anyway; the shockwave from the blast must have been the final blow.
"Still thinking of dragging us down with you even at death’s door, huh?" Jing Shu snarled, adding dozens of stabs to vent her fury. With such a twisted mind, she was certain this person was Shangguan Jun.
At this moment, the fat chicken also flapped down from the car, rubbing against Jing Shu’s thigh. It seemed to sense its owner’s anger and, for once, obediently refrained from hastily devouring the corpse.
Jing Shu had been wondering how Shangguan Jun would return to find Wu You’ai, but she hadn’t expected him to come alone, using the tedious method of a stakeout.
When did he start targeting me? Did he know about the surveillance at my home, which is why he didn’t come closer and reveal his identity? It seems the scope of future surveillance will need to be expanded.
Jing Shu wiped the rainwater from her face. Her family hadn’t fully reacted yet, so she quickly retrieved the large boulders back into the Magic Cube Space. In this battle, she had lost more than a dozen of them. The boulders in the front rows had shattered into debris, and even those behind had cracks. These boulders are consumables, she mused. I need to acquire some blast-proof equipment if I get the chance.
If that Hand Grenade had exploded on the car, there was no doubt the entire family would have been wiped out. The mere thought was terrifying!
Jing Shu felt it was time for some introspection. She had always believed there was still a trace of social order left in the apocalypse. With guns and Hand Grenades, what danger couldn’t I handle?
This time it was just a Hand Grenade; what if next time it’s something even more powerful?
In her previous life, she was too poor for anyone to bother with her. But in this life, possessing the Magic Cube Space and its wealth of resources, she needed commensurate power to protect them.
First, she needed to enhance her own strength. This incident made Jing Shu realize that her ability to detect danger was insufficient.
Right now, she could command her poison Bees to attack people, but it was a one-sided interaction.
For example, she could only issue orders to the poison Bees and couldn’t receive any feedback from them; she didn’t even know if the Bees had successfully stung their target.
If she could control the poison Bees to scout the surroundings, they could inform her of anyone nearby and the lay of the land. Then, she could avoid many dangers, like today’s ambush.
The fat chicken had drunk the most Spiritual Spring water, yet Jing Shu could only faintly perceive its intentions. This indicated the issue wasn’t with the Spiritual Spring but with the Magic Cube Space’s low level. The Magic Cube’s First Form and Second Form exhibited completely different abilities. It was certain that each upgrade would increase its overall capabilities.
Jing Shu suddenly felt an urgent need to upgrade the Magic Cube Space. She had a premonition that an upgraded Magic Cube Space would be of great assistance. Perhaps it could even integrate with my own strength? Right now, I have all this physical strength, but it’s of little practical use. She planned to study this thoroughly once she returned home.
Before upgrading the Magic Cube Space, perhaps I could attach infrared pinhole cameras to the poison Bees for nighttime surveillance.
As Jing Shu finished clearing away the boulders, Mr. Jing rushed out. Seeing Jing Shu unharmed, he finally breathed a sigh of relief. "What happened? What was that explosion just now?"
"Someone buried explosives. Fortunately, the car tipped over at the right moment, and the blast went off course. The person responsible was already dead when I got there. Let’s get Grandpa and the others out of the car first, then we can discuss everything else," Jing Shu replied.
Thankfully, Grandpa and his wife had been drinking Spiritual Spring water for over a year and were still robust. After everyone was helped out of the vehicle, the family was relatively unscathed. The car, however, was in bad shape; it was uncertain if it could still be driven. Moreover, the heavy vehicle had flipped onto its side, and even Jing Shu’s considerable strength wasn’t enough to right it.
"Should we call Captain Li?" Mr. Jing asked.
Jing Shu shook her head. The scene is too strange. After Yang Yang’s suspicions last time, we can’t risk involving the police again.
Just then, her phone rang. Luckily, it was Heng Jin, calling to say he had arrived in Wu City!
