CHAPTER 138: CHAPTER 138 VERA WAVE’S BOTTOM LINE (3) EXTRA
Stepping out of the private elevator downstairs, Vera Wave felt an instant chill as the wind blew through her damp clothes.
"ACHOO!"
Unable to control the sneeze, Vera tightened her coat, turned up her collar, and quickened her pace onto the main street. Without a second thought about saving money, she hailed a taxi back to the Hepingli Community.
She had barely settled into the car when her phone rang. The screen displayed an unfamiliar number, and she answered the call, puzzled.
"Hello?!"
A warm, deep male voice spoke from the other end. "Vera, it’s me, Nathan Leafcastle. We arranged to visit Grandma together yesterday, didn’t we? When are you free?"
"I..." Vera glanced at her watch. "I’m on my way now."
"Alright, I’ll head to where we met yesterday and wait for you there. I’m nearby. I’m driving right now, so I have to hang up. See you in a bit."
He didn’t even give her a chance to speak before he ended the call.
Vera frowned slightly as she listened to the dial tone. She really didn’t want him to see her in this disheveled state!
This guy, just like Kris Cooper, loved to control others and decide everything.
"Sir!" Vera sat up straighter. "Could you please drive a bit faster?"
Her only option now was to hurry home, change, and then come back out. That way, she could avoid Nathan seeing her in such a sorry state.
The taxi driver, noticing her distress, kindly responded, "Alright, miss. I’ll do my best."
"Thank you," Vera said gratefully, hugging her arms tighter around herself.
The taxi drove all the way to the Hepingli Community. As she got out, Vera deliberately took out a hundred-dollar bill and handed it over.
"Please, keep the change. I accidentally got the seat a little wet. This should cover a car wash, right?"
"No need!" The taxi driver insisted, handing back the change. "My daughter is about your age and studies out of town too. It’s not easy for young women like you living alone. Hurry up and change your clothes before you catch a cold."
"Thank you, Uncle."
Vera’s eyes welled up. She took the money, stepped out of the car, gave him another bow, and then hurried into the residential complex.
"Vera!"
Just as she reached the entrance to the complex, she heard someone call her name.
Vera turned. She saw Nathan Leafcastle approaching her from beside the main gate. His sharp brows furrowed when he noticed her drenched pant leg and the soaked half of her sleeve.
"How did you end up like this?"
"Oh... I accidentally slipped and fell," Vera said, quickly making up an excuse. "You... ACHOO..."
Quickly undoing his suit buttons, Nathan took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
"No... really, I’m fine..."
Vera started to refuse, but he had already pulled the jacket snugly around her. In a tone like that of a concerned father or older brother, he said, "Hurry back, take a hot shower, and change your clothes. Don’t catch a cold!"
Vera smiled at him gratefully. "Then... would you come in with me?"
"Sure, let’s go!"
They walked into the residential complex together. Vera’s fingers, stiff with cold, hadn’t warmed up yet, and she fumbled with the keys to open the door.
"Make yourself at home..."
Nathan, his brow furrowed with concern, just said, "Don’t worry about me. Go get changed quickly."
"Alright, please have a seat then!"
Vera went into her room, closed the door, and began to change out of her wet clothes.
Nathan stood in the living room, his gaze sweeping around. As he took in the simple, worn-out room, his sharp brows furrowed even more deeply.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
A knock sounded at the door.
Nathan walked over and opened the door.
Outside stood Kris Cooper, his suit still bearing the dust of his trip from Singapore. The moment his eyes met Nathan’s, the smile on Kris’s face froze.
