CHAPTER 172: CHAPTER 173: ONE PERSON SLEEPS HALF? (1)
Such a gentle tone, and he even said he wanted to treat them to a meal... Kris Cooper keenly sensed something unusual.
"A man?"
"Yes," Vera Wave instinctively answered, then looked up in surprise. "Why do you care?"
Just as I thought, it’s a man!
"Who?"
"Wait... isn’t this my personal privacy?"
"I’m your boyfriend; I have the right to inquire about your personal life."
"But..." Vera pouted. "Mr. President, I think... there’s something I need to explain to you. Last night... I... I wasn’t confessing to you."
"What?" Kris Cooper raised an eyebrow. "So... you’re planning to lead me on and then dump me?"
"I... I didn’t mean that."
"It had better be that way!"
Kris Cooper turned and pushed open his office door. Vera hurried in after him. Before she could speak, Kris Cooper spun back around, reached out to close the door behind her, then, raising his hands, he gripped her shoulders and pressed her against the door.
Thinking he was about to kiss her again, Vera quickly raised a hand to cover her mouth.
"Let’s get this straight first!"
Hearing the muffled sound of her voice from behind her palm, Kris Cooper’s lips curled into a smirk. He leaned in, bringing his face close to hers. Meeting his gaze, she felt her breath catch and her heart began to pound.
"You said you liked me, and you kissed me voluntarily... Then you say you don’t want to be lovers. So what did you have in mind... a bed partner?!"
"No!" Vera snapped back to her senses, bit her lip, and finally summoned her courage. "I don’t deny that I like you a little, but I don’t want a relationship right now. I don’t want to be betrayed again."
She had just experienced a failed relationship and truly didn’t have the courage to start over. The taste of betrayal was just too bitter to endure.
"I will not betray you."
"All men say that."
Harry Snowpine had said similar things, and he eventually found a new lover.
Her tone was laced with a heart-wrenching grievance. Looking at her crestfallen face, Kris Cooper frowned again, his heart already brimming with anger.
He wasn’t angry with her, but with that bastard Harry Snowpine.
Sneaking a glance at his expression and noticing his livid face, Vera shrank back slightly.
"Actually, I know you’re a good person, and you’re good to me... Can we just be friends first? Please don’t be angry. I promise, if I ever genuinely want to be in a relationship someday, you’ll be the first person I ask."
Her eyes, looking up at him, were clear and bright, holding a hint of hope. Gazing into them, the expression on his face gradually softened.
"Then you’d better keep your word!"
She nodded immediately. "I... I swear, if I, Vera Wave, ever look for a boyfriend in the future, Kris Cooper will be the first one I consider. If I go back on my word, then let me..."
"Stop! Don’t say any more. I believe you!" Kris Cooper cut off her self-deprecating vow. He took the laptop and documents from her, his other arm coming around to pat her gently on the back. "Go on, wash your hands and get ready to eat."
He knew she would be working overtime, so he had already ordered dinner. He’d called her up because he was worried she would go hungry if she stayed in her office alone.
Vera obediently went to wash her hands. Security had already delivered the dinner Kris Cooper ordered. When Vera came out of the restroom, Kris Cooper had already arranged the meal on the table.
Looking at the meal spread on the table, Vera Wave frowned slightly.
"How much was it?"
"This one’s on me," Kris Cooper said, patting the seat beside him. "Come sit."
With her most pressing concern resolved, Vera’s mood lightened considerably, and she visibly relaxed. Sitting down beside him, she smiled and said,
"Well, in that case... I won’t stand on ceremony!"
