CHAPTER 233: CHAPTER 234 THE LEGENDARY MERMAID LINE (2)
She stretched out her hand and opened the box. Inside the round box was a necklace—a silver one. At the end of the chain was a delicate little cage.
An irregularly shaped gemstone was enclosed in the cage. Its material was unknown, but under the soft night light, it shone with a multicolored luster.
"How unique." Vera Wave held the necklace, lifting the pendant into the air. "This is the first time I’ve ever seen such a design."
"Its name is ’Lost Treasure’." Kris Cooper watched the girl before him. He reached out, unclasped the necklace, and placed it around her neck, then adjusted the pendant. Gazing at her face, his voice was gentle and affectionate. "A treasure found after so much difficulty must be locked away safely. It can never be lost again."
Vera Wave lowered her gaze to the pendant resting on her chest. She quickly tugged the blanket up to cover it.
The man, however, had already slipped out of bed and left the bedroom. When he returned a moment later, he was carrying a small, exquisite cake with a lit candle on it.
He sat on the bed beside her and spoke softly.
"Happy birthday, Vera."
Happy birthday?
Vera Wave looked at the cake in his hand, then her gaze returned to his face.
But tomorrow is the 1st.
"Today is the 30th!"
"It’s already past midnight."
Kris Cooper gazed at her dotingly as he said this.
He hadn’t slept, waiting for this very moment. He wanted to be the first to wish her a happy birthday as soon as it was past midnight, just as he had promised.
Looking at the cake in his hand, Vera Wave recalled the box he’d carried earlier. She realized then that it must have contained the cake; he’d wrapped it so carefully to keep it a secret from her.
If he hadn’t mentioned it, she would have almost forgotten it was her birthday. A wave of warmth spread through her heart as she thought about how meticulously he had prepared and how he had deliberately waited until midnight to be the first to wish her a happy birthday.
"Thank you, Kris."
Kris Cooper stroked her small face. "Still calling me Kris? Weren’t you calling me ’Husband’ quite smoothly just a little while ago?"
She pursed her lips, giving him a playful smile.
She clasped her hands together, closed her eyes, and made a solemn wish over the cake. Then, she opened her eyes and blew out the candles in one breath.
Kris Cooper placed the cake on the table, then speared a strawberry with a fork and offered it to her lips.
"Your teeth aren’t the best, so you shouldn’t eat sweets at night. Just have this strawberry. The cake can be your breakfast tomorrow!"
"How do you know my teeth aren’t good?"
"You love sweets so much, of course your teeth wouldn’t be perfect!"
He chuckled, a little evasively, and brought the strawberry to her lips.
She opened her mouth and bit into the strawberry, then looked at him with pleading eyes.
"Then can I... just have a tiny taste of the cake?"
Having loved sweets since childhood, her teeth weren’t indeed in the best condition. She was usually very careful with them, terrified of another toothache.
Getting up, Kris Cooper cut a small piece of cake and handed it to her.
"You can only have this one small piece!"
"Okay, okay!"
She immediately took it without ceremony and dug in with relish.
Kris Cooper then went into the bathroom. He returned with mouthwash and an empty paper cup. After she finished eating and wiped her mouth, he handed them to her so she could rinse.
After clearing away the cake and the other items, Kris Cooper finally returned to bed.
As soon as he slipped under the covers, Vera Wave’s warm body snuggled up to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and planted a smacking kiss on his cheek.
"Thank you, Husband!"
