CHAPTER 284: CHAPTER 285: WHO IS IT REALLY? (3)
While the two of them were delivering the items to the photography studio, Irene Spencer was getting up from her chair, ready to head to the changing room.
As Anabel Wilton saw Vera Wave and Merlin Bradley walk in, she came over quickly, snatching her purse from Vera’s arms.
"Such slowpokes!" she grumbled. Opening her purse, she checked its contents and only after confirming her wallet, cell phone, and other important items were still inside did she place it on the table. "All right, Ms. Spencer is going to change her clothes now, so hurry up and get out of here."
When Merlin Bradley saw Anabel Wilton rummaging through her purse and checking her wallet, she frowned. Is she treating us like common thieves? "Hey, what do you mean by that? Are you calling us thieves?!"
How dare a junior employee yell at her? Anabel Wilton opened her mouth, about to lash out, but Vera Wave had already started apologizing and was pulling Merlin Bradley away to leave.
They had only taken a couple of steps when a voice rang out from behind them. It was Irene Spencer.
"Hold on!"
The sound of Irene’s voice made Vera’s heart tighten. Could Irene have recognized her?
She turned around, shrinking a little, moving behind Merlin Bradley.
Merlin Bradley stopped, her attitude towards Irene noticeably cold due to her dissatisfaction with Anabel Wilton.
"Ms. Spencer, is there something you need?"
Irene Spencer’s lips curved into a smile as she walked over. "Lucy Clark, bring me two photographs!"
Anabel Wilton suppressed her anger and rummaged through her bag for two spare photos. Irene signed them boldly and handed them to Merlin Bradley and Vera Wave.
"Here, these are for you both. Thanks for your help."
Although Merlin Bradley was annoyed with Anabel Wilton, she was somewhat flattered that such a big star was personally giving them autographed photos. She hurriedly accepted them with both hands.
"Thank you, Ms. Spencer."
"No need for formalities." Irene Spencer gave her a once-over. "Are you both employees at Ashton’s?"
Vera Wave remained hidden behind Merlin Bradley, who responded with a smile, "Yes."
Irene Spencer glanced at Vera, hidden behind Merlin Bradley. Seeing only the top of Vera’s head, Irene assumed she was simply shy in the presence of a star like herself and didn’t give it much thought, continuing her questions to Merlin Bradley.
"Have you been working at Ashton’s for a long time?"
"Not very long, just about half a year."
"I see..." Irene Spencer nodded slightly, then abruptly changed the subject. "Does Ashton have a female manager or supervisor with the surname Wave? Do you know of her?"
"Surname Wave?" Merlin Bradley was taken aback. "No, I don’t think so!"
"Impossible!" Irene Spencer mused. "Her full name is Vera Wave."
"Vera Wave?" A flash of surprise flickered in Merlin Bradley’s eyes. Why would she suddenly ask about Vera Wave?
Vera, standing behind her, also tensed up and quickly nudged Merlin Bradley’s arm, signaling her to keep quiet.
"Why do you ask that?" Merlin Bradley asked, puzzled.
Anabel Wilton interjected impatiently, "Enough with the pointless talk! Ms. Spencer asked you a question, so just answer it!"
"Lucy Clark!" Irene Spencer glared at Anabel Wilton, then turned her gentle gaze back to Merlin Bradley. "I’m just curious, a casual question."
Merlin Bradley immediately shook her head. "I don’t know. I’ve never heard of her."
"Thank you for your trouble, you two."
Hearing Merlin say she didn’t know, Irene Spencer immediately lost interest. Lifting her chin, she turned and strutted towards the changing room, Anabel Wilton following closely. Anabel then waved her hand dismissively at Merlin Bradley and Vera Wave, as if shooing away two dogs.
"Such nerve! What’s so great about being an assistant!" Merlin Bradley grumbled under her breath.
Vera quickly pulled her out of the photography studio.
