I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World
Chapter 1642 - 1636: No Worse Than This
CHAPTER 1642: CHAPTER 1636: NO WORSE THAN THIS
"Prepare for battle!"
Before Ghost Head could say anything, the officer behind him shouted to all the soldiers, who swiftly moved to various shooting positions with their arms and legs. On the wall, they manipulated the mounted platforms, making a loud "buzzing" noise as they turned the hefty cannon barrels.
The soldiers had been at ease, but now their expressions were replaced with seriousness, and for a moment, the atmosphere atop the wall was murderous!
"Have they arrived... No... Something’s not right..."
Ghost Head had already raised his weapon, ready to shoot as soon as the zombies entered effective range. But just then, he heard murmuring from Brother Shi’s mouth. He turned around and saw Brother Shi’s eyebrows knitted, eyes fixed on a few figures staggering from afar, seemingly noticing something more terrifying.
"What’s wrong?"
"Those zombies aren’t right..."
"Not right?" Ghost Head turned back skeptically, looking at the shambling figures that were unmistakably zombies. But to say they’re not right, he couldn’t see it; zombies should look exactly like this!
"What’s wrong with them?"
"You didn’t notice?"
"Uh... Maybe I’m a bit dense..." Brother Shi’s expression had no trace of humor, making Ghost Head’s already tense mood even tenser.
"What do you think of the intelligence of those Level 8 zombies?"
"Why ask me that? I haven’t encountered them. If I had, I wouldn’t be standing here in front of you, would I?"
"Answer me!"
"If you insist, I’d say... they’re about as intelligent as humans. Scientists have studied them; the intelligence of Level 8 zombies is almost comparable to humans."
"Do you think those zombies are formidable?"
"They’re just a bunch of ordinary zombies, right?" Ghost Head craned his neck to look again. Although he was only a Level 2 New Human, his vision was far superior to ordinary humans. He could roughly discern from afar that the zombies were ordinary, because of their clothes which were tattered and stained with fresh blood, some even had fragments of exosuit armor hanging off them. They were clearly just recently infected.
"So?"
"So what? You’re acting strange..."
"Those zombies are cannon fodder!"
"Cannon fodder? What’s wrong with being cannon fodder?"
"Do you think these cannon fodder pose any threat to us?"
"No... Uh... I think I understand now..." Just as Ghost Head uttered these words, he realized that those zombies in military uniforms were indeed cannon fodder. But the key lies in this cannon fodder; the Zombie King had appeared in this battle, indicating its followers could appear at any moment! Never mind the Zombie King’s intelligence, even the Level 8 zombies have intelligence comparable to humans, having led zombie tides against other survivor bases before, right?
Therefore, even Level 8 zombies should know that their cannon fodder can’t possibly shake the defense of a survivor base; those low-level zombies are just fodder!
"You’re saying that those high-level zombies have a conspiracy?" Ghost Head asked Brother Shi again, but before Brother Shi could reply, a square-faced soldier nearby spoke first: "It’s not your fault you don’t understand; it’s your first time in a situation like this. In the past, when facing zombie tides, there were all sorts in the first wave. For them to all be ordinary zombies now, it’s a bit..."
The square-faced soldier stopped abruptly after furrowing his brow. Everyone was puzzled about what the zombie tide was up to, since those zombies weren’t just ordinary ones, but freshly zombified frontline soldiers. Considering this was a zombie tide composed of royal zombies, the first wave should consist of older ones, right?
It’s a strange feeling; it seems the zombie tide deliberately waits for those they infect to rise and join them, then orders these new members to charge at the front as cannon fodder.
Ghost Head looked around, noticing that soldiers and officers near and far were also frowning. For them, seasoned veterans, this scene was excessively unusual, wasn’t it?
"I feel... we might all be thinking the same thing." Ghost Head replied to the square-faced soldier hesitantly.
"What do you guys think?"
"I think there might be some conspiracy in the zombie tide."
"I think so too," Brother Shi chimed in.
"Looks like we’re all on the same page, but the situation is right here, and there’s no way back..." The square-faced soldier thought of something, shook his head, and his expression suddenly relaxed.
"Even if the end result is death, it’s just becoming a zombie. The situation is already at its worst; whatever conspiracy the zombie tide has, that’s it."
"True..."
Ghost Head chuckled, unable to deny that the square-faced soldier made sense. Even if the situation worsened, the result would just be dying in a failed defense, so what could be worse?
Tap tap tap~
On the orders of an officer in the distance, several soldiers entered the operating room on the ground. Soon, the previously opened Anti-Zombie Wall Gate began closing slowly, the heavy gears turning emitted rhythmic, collision-like sounds. Countless laser heavy cannons aimed their thick barrels at the zombies stumbling forward from afar, the automatic defense system activated, and numerous gun barrels emerged from the wall, while signal lights atop the wall flashed red, clearly visible even in daylight.
The advance troops of the zombie tide were indeed ordinary zombies, but their numbers weren’t large, only a few hundred scattered across the wide, flat land. Yet behind these advance troops, a black line was clearly visible!
Although this was Ghost Head and Brother Shi’s first zombie tide defense battle, they weren’t completely ignorant. They knew that the thin black line behind these ordinary zombies was the true zombie tide!
The black line slowly thickened in the soldiers’ eyes as all the soldiers relaxed muscles gradually tensed, entering battle readiness.
The scattered advance troops were still far from firing range, but after a while, Brother Shi suddenly made a move. He reached into his pocket and pulled something out, shaking his pant leg to spill some tobacco leaves.
"My pocket has a hole! Damn!" Brother Shi took out a half-smoked cigarette, the leaves lightly brushing his skin, causing a slight itch. He couldn’t help but reach to scratch, while Ghost Head’s eyes lit up.
"Damn it, you’re not smoking it? Give it to me!"
