The soldiers kept marching on both sides of us while Loyd led us to the King’s quarters. I had never been to his private chambers, so I had no idea what to expect, but I was certain it would be the most grand and luxurious rooms of all.

I had not expected to have an entire floor dedicated to him. There were gold and silver ted vases and motifs running around the walls, and the curtains were a deep blue, contrasting vividly with the gold and silver around them.

The fleet of guards stopped just outside the grand hallway that was lit with a dozen torches and candles, and a few guards were stationed along both the side of walls at regr intervals.

I looked apprehensively at Killian, and he seemed to understand my question, so he leaned to the side to whisper in my ear.

“Nobody cane and go out of this floor without the permission of the King and the head of the royal guard.”

I nodded, though the presence of so many people around me made me queasy. I was used to seeing empty corridors with the asional servants scurrying around, not a hallway full of guards.

I subconsciously inched closer to Killian and saw him wince a little. His hand flew to his abdomen, and I asked him worriedly.

“Are you sure you are okay? I really could havee here alone.”

I worried at my lower lip, but he was insistent. Loyd stopped outside one of therge ornate doors that was taller and broader than all the others.

It was also decorated with gold and silver motifs along with velvet embedded into the doors held together by what appeared to be diamonds.

Loyd looked at us and opened the door.

    “You may go in”

I nodded and took arge breath as I stepped inside. But it was a mistake because I instantly started coughing the moment I entered.

The room was filled with the smell of hundreds of incense sticks burning around, the smoke so dense that I could hardly see what or who was around me.

Killian patted my back while I was fighting for my life already.

“See, it was a good idea toe along”

I was already teary eyed and ran towards the window to throw them open and breathe in some fresh air, but

    they were locked.

“Are you trying to wake up the dead with your loud coughing and banging the windows?” Somebody hissed at me, but even through the smoke, I could identify who the voice belonged to.

“She was just struggling to breathe a little,” Killian answered on my behalf while I looked around to see Nina staring down at me with contempt.

“How are you all not affected by the smoke or smell?” I asked between gasps.

    Killian offered a supportive smile.

“You get used to it after a while. And the incense sticks are supposed to purify the air of contamination and possible germs. A must for a sick patient’s room, I dare say.”

He kept patting my back, and gradually I did get ustomed to the smell.

“Get the little witch here, brother. Don’t waste time chitchatting,” I heard another familiar voice and was spared having to reply to Nina.

But then I had to endure an even worse person calling me out.

Martin was seated beside his ailing father, munching on some chips while a maid dressed in a revealing dress kept pouring drinks in his fancy goblet.

“I didn’t expect to see you here, brother,” Killian said, and Martin smiled at the girl standing beside him before giving her butt a squeeze.

I wanted to feel bad for the girl, but she blushed way too hard for her to not like whatever he was doing.

Martin put a handful of chips in his mouth again and mumbled between crunches.

“Oh, of course, I would be beside father during his difficult time and try to provide himfort”

Martin said, chugging onto the drink and holding his fancy goblet in front of the maid, who quickly filled it up for him.

“Clearly, that is one way ito /iprovidefort to a sick patient”

I nodded much to Martin’s disappointment. He pretended he had not heard me and turned his attention to his brother instead.

“Where were you all this time? Looks like you were busy,” Martin said, though his tone suggested he was mocking his brother for not being around his father.

Killian shrugged. “I got into some scuffle, nothing much”

It was my turn to stare at Killian.

“A scuffle? That wound almost killed you!” I added indignantly.

Why was he ying it off as if it meant nothing?

    Martin chastised his little brother.

“I dont care what scuffles you get into…or what kinks you explore with the devious little witch of ours. But I suppose she got enough time to reim her powers or whatever it is you say makes her that bloody cursed hag’s descendant.”

    What the fuck?

He was suggesting that Killian got stabbed while exploring some kink with me? That I stabbed him?

Martin had been there in that crowd of onlookers and ran away to hide inside the pce with his guards rather than taking on a threat like a man. And he had the nerve to use Killian in indulging in fantasies when he was out here eating and drinking as if his father’s ailment was some grand celebration.

    Wait, a second….maybe it was!

If anything happened to the King, Martin would get to sit on the throne without doing anything. Yes, that was it!

That was the reason he was so ted and looked eagerly at the crown resting by the King’s bedside table every now and then.

It made my blood boil to think of how low this ugly son of a bitch could stoop to.

I kept ring at him, but Martin looked at me and pretended to be scared.

“Ooh….” He ran his hands over himself as if he was shivering due to fear.

“Look at that re, it could kill me!” he said, poking his elbow into the girl beside her who alsoughed as if it was some big joke.

“Why was I summoned here?” I asked, cutting back on the need to small talk because I was not interested in spending my time talking to him.

“Oh well. Right” He said, straightening his back and looking at his father.

“I thought since the healer and the temple priestesses are already exhausted and running out of options to heal father, we might as well bring his favorite witch to wave her magic wand and make it all go away.”

Martin said though from the looks of it, he didn’t hope I could achieve anything.
