Chapter 219: Chaos at the illegal market

Belos was a nation just south of Odaria. It wasn't very big; compared with the nations of Earth, it wouldn't have been bigger than Belgium. Officially it was a completely autonomous parliamentary republic.

All bullshit.

Everyone in the world knew very well that Belos had nothing autonomous: he depended completely on Odaria to survive. There was also very little democratic: as in Odaria, politicians were elected on the basis of how willing they were to satisfy the wishes of the financial giants. If they weren't, then they didn't go beyond mere candidacy. All the countries bordering Odaria were more or less like this; practically vassal states.

Of all the nations that depended on Odaria, Belos was perhaps the worst offender. More than a nation it was considered a haunt for crime. The most shady and illegal activities were carried out in the open without anyone doing anything to stop them. Brokers and gangsters around the world used it as a crossroads for their dirty business.

In particular, the 'holy city' of crime was Maltawin, the capital. Seen from the outside, it looked like any third world nation, but it was enough to dig a little to find yourself in front of one of the largest illegal markets on the planet. Everything was traded there: drugs, narcotics, chemicals, weapons, even human beings. And of course, animals were also traded, including dinosaurs.

Illegal dinosaur fighting was the norm. It was not strange to see a baryonyx and a suchomimus beating each other in a sketchy arena. For some time, however, the dinosaur trade had become even more profitable: since the peace treaty came into force, all those raw materials that were obtained from dinosaurs (feathers, scales, horns, teeth, leather, meat, eggs), were no longer available on the market. It was natural that in such a situation the illegal market would not hesitate to take action.

After all, humans didn't have a hierarchical structure like dinosaurs. Among the dinosaurs, if the pack leader said not to do something, no one did it anymore. Among humans, however, even when the law prevented doing something, there was still someone who did it.

However, the situation would not have continued for long. Not after that fateful night.

The humans went about their business as usual, but if they could see beyond the camouflage provided by [Ambush], they would have noticed a large curved claw drumming on the ground.

The claw belonged to a small dinosaur similar to a velociraptor, but slightly different in appearance and size. It was an atrociraptor. It was watching with disgust a fight between two baryonyx; as the two animals were forced to slaughter each other, the people around them screamed in satisfaction with the spectacle they were watching. When one of the two baryonyx fell to the ground there was no one who regretted that scene; the only one who was furious was the one who was probably its owner, since he had lost the money of the fighting, and who had started shouting insulting phrases towards the poor victim. The body of the baryonyx was simply picked up and dragged to what was probably the slaughterhouse to tear it apart and sell its meat.

"Humans... they are really rotten to the core" whispered the atrociraptor, obviously without being heard by anyone: [Ambush] also covered the noises. Seriously, which animal behaved that way? No other living thing would ever force two animals to fight each other to the death. What would he have gained from it? Who would have ever wanted to see such a show? They were just lives wasted for no reason.

The atrociraptor looked away and walked over to the containers that contained the dinosaurs they would fight later. He jumped inside one of them and found a battered carnotaur: he was missing a horn and had several wounds on his face and back. "Hey, friend!" he exclaimed revealing himself.

The carnotaur reacted not very well: as soon as he saw him he threw himself at him and tried in vain to bite him. Luckily he was held back by a chain.

"Hey, calm down, I'm a friend! My name is Tiger!" said the atrociraptor, but the carnotaur did not stop. "Listen, do you want to kill some humans?"

"Kill... humans...?" growled the carnotaur, finally starting to slow his momentum.

"I can give you a special power with which you will free yourself, and then you can kill those bastards. But first you have to join my pack"

"Yes... okay..."

The carnotaur clearly must have had some mental problem, and it was no surprise given what he was forced to do every day. As soon as he gave his assent, he suddenly felt very strong thanks to the combined effect of [Reinforced skin], [Powerful bite] and [Deadly claws]. A moment later a vision appeared before his eyes: a city near a forest full of dinosaurs. It only lasted a second, but it was long enough for the carnotaur to memorize what he had seen.

"You got the power, right? Now go and kick those bastards!" Tiger urged him. The carnotaur did not have it repeated and with a bite he shattered the chain, and then smashed the container door with a head. As soon as he was out he jumped on the first human he encountered and tore him apart with his jaws.

"What the hell is going on?"

"The carnotaur has freed himself!"

"Take up arms, quickly!"

The humans tried to fire at the carnotaur, but their shots bounced off his skin as if they were rubber. There was no way that simple guns could penetrate [Reinforced skin]. And soon the situation worsened: another container opened and a huge allosaurus emerged furious.

All the other containers where the dinosaurs were kept soon met the same fate. One after another they were smashed and the dinosaurs emerged tearing apart any human being in their path. There were a spinosaurus, a ceratosaurus, two tyrannosaurs, several velociraptors, a kentrosaurus, a triceratops, many pachycephalosaurs, a parasaurolophus...

And then suddenly a dinosaur bigger than all the others appeared almost out of nowhere. He was a giganotosaurus of unimaginable size. With a single blow of his jaws he broke the chains of the dinosaurs that were in the arena and freed them. Then he raised his head and roared, "To death the human bastards! Let them be massacred!"

There was a general stampede. The entire black market was uncovered and people started running everywhere, desperately trying to escape from the dinosaurs behind them, but four atrociraptors appeared on the scene and prevented the humans from escaping too far. Whenever the humans took a specific direction, one of the atrociraptors appeared in front of them, and they turned around in fright. And in doing so, the pursuing dinosaurs tore them apart one after the other.

Obviously, that was all a brilliantly concocted plan. The giganotosaurus who was inciting the revolt was none other than Snock. After receiving the assignment from Sobek, he had formed a small team made up of the four atrociraptors: Tiger, Ghost, Red and Panthera. Like Snock, they too had been victims of torture by humans for a long time before being found by the authorities and taken to the Mega Beast Park where Sobek had then freed them, and they wanted nothing but revenge. Seeing human blood flowing for them was a wonderful sight. Watching the dinosaurs who for years had been forced to fight slaughter their tormentors was a mystical experience for them.

Once his team was put together, Snock had agreed with Sobek on a plan: since the spinosaurus could now trade six skills with the [Contract], Sobek would immediately pass them on as soon as he received the [Contracts] of the various imprisoned dinosaurs. [Linguistics], [Linguistics (2)], [Reinforced skin], [Deadly claws], [Powerful bite] and [Teleportation]. In this way, the dinosaurs could have fought very well right away. Since it was unlikely to collide with tanks, abilities like [Devastating roar] were useless. In addition, Sobek would have also sent an image of Cartago via the mind-sharing ability of the [Contract], so that the dinosaurs could use [Teleportation].

Therefore, the plan had been very simple to design and even more to carry out: with the help of Rambo, Snock had spotted the illegal market, and then the atrociraptors had asked all the dinosaurs to join their herd. In this way, Sobek received the [Contracts] and passed on the abilities to them. At that point, nothing could stop the dinosaurs' escape.

Snock, head of the crazed dinosaur herd, didn't hold back in the slightest. His teeth ground and mangled any piece of human flesh they could reach, be it heads, arms, legs or torso. Behind him was a trail of blood.

Finally Snock had what he had always dreamed of. As he watched his tormentors scream in fear and pain, the giganotosaurus felt as if he had become invincible and that nothing could ever stop him again. Even so, however, he kept his mind clear.

He hadn't forgotten Sobek's warning: no casualties among the civilians. And in fact as soon as he noticed that they were moving away from the illegal market he immediately stopped his run. Also in the distance he could already hear the police sirens, and although from his point of view they could not consider themselves completely innocent (who closes his eyes to crimes is complicit!) He decided it was better to retire. After all, he did not know what weapons the police were equipped with and did not want to risk confronting some heavy weapon.

"Let's withdraw!" he roared back. His command was obviously not very welcome: the other dinosaurs wanted to continue chasing humans. And in fact the carnotaur who had been released first ignored him and kept running.

But Snock wasn't so easily ignored; with a kick he threw it to the ground. The carnotaur was about to get up and attack him, but the giganotosaurus stopped him by putting a foot on his neck. "What is your name?"

The carnotaur gasped; for a full minute he fought the giganotosaurus' paw, but Snock was too strong for him. Eventually he gave up. "I'm Toro"

"Very well, Toro, now I ask you: do you want to live or die?" Snock asked him with a very serious voice.

"I... sure, I want to live!" the carnotaur exclaimed. No life form wanted to die: the self-preservation of the species was a radical trait of animals, and only in very rare cases was it broken.

"Then listen to me and withdraw. Do it and I promise you will live. Ignore me and you will go back to the cage". Snock had no intention of wasting time trying to circumvent the carnotaur with beautiful words: he recognized his eyes and knew his mind was too shabby for his words to reach him. Therefore, rather than hinging on the sense of rationality, he decided to hinge on fear.

And in fact Toro obeyed immediately: his eyes filled with horror at the thought of going back to the cage to wait for the next fight, and he quickly turned around. The other dinosaurs didn't take too long to imitate him.

Snock followed them and made sure they were moving away from prying eyes. All the poor unfortunates who were still around were eliminated by the atrociraptors. When he was sure there were no humans left to look at them, Snock roared: "It's time! Think of the landscape you saw in the vision and activate [Teleportation]!"

It was a moment: a second before the dinosaurs were there, a second later they were gone. When the authorities arrived they found only the black market destroyed, and no one could explain what happened to the dinosaurs.
