Chapter 90: The Invitation
CHAPTER 90: CHAPTER 90: THE INVITATION
"What are you doing?"
A soft, melodic voice cut through the chaos at that moment .
The door opened from behind, and a graceful figure appeared in front of them, Alex recognized her immediately, she was none other than the Miss Evelyn from the one of the three most influential families in the Ironhold city.
"Ahem..." Alex coughed, suddenly looking a little awkward at moment. "We were just... having a meeting.... yes a normal meeting nothing more."
But before the atmosphere could settle, one of the slow-witted recruits in the syndicate failed to catch on the changing atmosphere.
"Cut him down!" he shouted loudly.
"Take everything!"
Nathan: "..."
Alex: "..."
Other members: "..."
The words echoed through the yard, jarring against the sudden silence from the crowd.
Nathan’s face twitched violently at his pig like teammate.
Without hesitation he stepped forward and smacked the man across the back of the head so hard that he fell down on the ground.
Shutting his chant at once.
"Idiot!" he hissed under his breath.
Everyone else had shut their mouths when Miss Evelyn appeared, but this fool was still shouting like a lunatic.
If he doesn’t deserved a beating than who would in this world.
Alex let out a quiet cough, trying to steer things back to normal.
But Miss Evelyn didn’t seem dwell on it much.
Instead, she stepped forward gracefully in front of him, holding out a folded invitation in her hands.
"Mr. Alex, you’ve made great contributions in suppressing the bandits this time, without your map we will not be able to locate the bandits hideout so easily" she said politely.
"In two days, my family will hold a banquet to thank you specially for your help in eradicating the bandits. Please accept this invitation, and be sure to attend the party."
Her tone grew more formal. "Representatives from other families will be present too, as well as the county magistrate himself. We hope you will honor us with your presence, Mr. Alex."
With that, she handed him the invitation and quickly excused herself from there.
Though she had two attendants with her to act as her bodyguards, she still didn’t feel safe as there were still hundreds of men gathered in the yard that were making her uncomfortable.
It was natural that she felt uneasy lingering there for long in front of so many man, so she left in a hurry.
"A celebration banquet specially to thank me?"
Alex turned the red invitation card over in his hand, his expression thoughtful as his eyes lingered on it more.
Inwardly, he was quietly weighing whether attending the banquet was the right choice or not.
If he went on to attend the banquet two days later, then his identity would undoubtedly be revealed in full view, and there would be no way to continue keeping a low profile in future.
But if he chose not to go, that would look as though he was refusing to give proper respect to the host family, which could easily cause some unnecessary trouble for him.
The thought made Alex feel a little irritated inside in him.
"Boss, I think it’s better if you attend the banquet," Jacob said from the side, breaking the silence.
"Simon Reed is already dead for so long, but there has been no news released in the city.
It is very likely that the county magistrate suppressed the information. Why would he do that? I think there’s something strange about it.
In my opinion, boss, it would be safer if you showed up in there."
Alex gave a slow nod in approval.
After all, being the captain of the city police was already a very important position in Ironhold City, one with quite a bit of influence and authority in it.
Logically speaking, the sudden death of someone like Simon should have stirred up a great deal of public attention and caused a commotion among the common people.
But strangely, there had been no news at all, not even a whisper on the streets about him.
As if he was never been there at all.
That could only mean one thing, the county magistrate himself had deliberately held the news back from spreading.
This in itself was enough to make Alex suspicious about the motive of Magistrate.
"We will follow wait and see strategy," Alex said finally. "When I feel the time is right, then I’ll decide to go.
After all, I—Alex—am not someone who can be invited casually by just anyone."
As he said this, a faint smile spread across his face.
Seeing him laugh, the others standing around also broke into laughter, and their admiration for Alex deepened further.
Look at that!
This was their Boss calm, decisive, and confident enough to treat an invitation from the city magistrate in Ironhold City as though it depended entirely on his mood whether he would attend or not.
That was true power that a leader should possess when leading a gang.
At this moment, Nathan leaned closer to Alex ears and lowered his voice so that only Alex could hear his voice.
"Brother Alex, I heard that the county magistrate has ties with that foreign jeweler that my sister has bought those jade bracelets earlier from.
If you get a chance to speak with him at the banquet, you might be able to find out when that jeweler will come to Ironhold City again."
Alex’s eyes lit up slightly at those words.
The jeweller Nathan was talking about was the none other than the foreign merchant who had once sold Lucy, a top-quality jade bracelet.
The very same bracelet that was was sold by him in the modern world at a sky high price of $1.5 million, at once to Mr. Mehra.
If he could learn more about this man at the banquet, and perhaps discover when he might return to Ironhold City again...
The thought alone was enough to stir Alex’s imagination to run wild, and already ideas began running through his mind.
