Just A Daoist Who Occasionally Kicks Ass
Chapter 339: Flip the Table! Charge In! Ghost Slave!
CHAPTER 339: FLIP THE TABLE! CHARGE IN! GHOST SLAVE!
A normal person, upon stumbling into something like a ghost wedding or a ghost town, would inevitably end up with their heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys eaten by these evil spirits, dying a miserable, unnatural death.
Compared to that, Old Daoist Huang’s approach was already considered very cautious: hold back, stay low, blend into this boisterous wedding banquet as much as possible, and wait for an opening.
Plenty of ghost stories were written exactly like this.
“Daoist Li, once night falls, yin will reach its extreme and give rise to a trace of yang. That will be our best chance to escape!” Old Daoist Huang whispered mysteriously.
Meanwhile, Guo Wei looked visibly tense. He was nothing more than a third-rate vagabond with chaotic qi and blood. When encountering something like this, he was basically a walking offering.
“What if the ghosts become fiercer after nightfall?” Li Yanchu asked.
“Don’t worry, Daoist Li. I am a true disciple of the Divine Heavens Sect. I still have a few trump cards hidden up my sleeve.”
Old Daoist Huang pulled out two talisman papers from his robe and handed them over.
Divine Heavens Sect... The corner of Li Yanchu’s mouth twitched slightly. Most likely self-proclaimed.
Still, as someone who also came from a rundown temple and endured bitter cultivation, Li Yanchu’s face revealed no trace of disdain. He discreetly swept a glance at the villagers of Yang Family Town around them.
“Ever heard the saying ‘ghosts are sly, you can’t trick them’? I’m afraid your scheme won’t slip past these villagers’ ghostly eyes.”
When they heard this, Old Daoist Huang’s hand trembled uncontrollably, and Guo Wei’s expression turned even darker. The truth was, their survival so far in this ghost town wasn’t thanks to any skill, but pure chance.
“Daoist Li, in your view... what should we do then?” Old Daoist Huang asked in a hushed voice.
Suddenly, a man’s head was accidentally knocked off by the person next to him during a toast.
Thud! It fell to the ground. The severed head kept babbling drunkenly, rambling on and on. Yet everyone in the courtyard carried on chatting as if nothing had happened.
Old Daoist Huang and Guo Wei felt their scalps go numb, a chill rising straight from their hearts. Li Yanchu, however, remained calm as ever. And then he said something that completely baffled Old Daoist Huang.
“When I was a kid watching horror movies, the male and female leads could never escape. They’d just keep trying again and again, until one by one they all died miserably. And I always wondered, why not just fight back? If you die, don’t you just become a ghost too?”
Old Daoist Huang had traveled far and wide, picking up all sorts of dialects and sayings. But the words ‘horror movie’ still made his brow furrow deeply.
As for Li Yanchu’s latter words, he understood well enough. Still, he couldn’t quite make sense of it.
At a time like this... was this young Daoist actually thinking of flipping the table and charging headlong into the fray?!
“You mustn’t act on impulse! This courtyard is packed with ghosts. To turn an entire town into a ghost domain, there must be an incredibly powerful spirit hiding among them!” Old Daoist Huang warned anxiously.
“Small matter. No need to panic.” Li Yanchu flashed the two of them a smile.
Then he turned and strode straight toward the young man who had just knocked someone’s head off.
“Hey!” Old Daoist Huang couldn’t help calling out under his breath, stamping his foot in frustration. So impatient!
The ghosts of this town were vicious beyond belief, and doing this would surely provoke a calamity!
But before he could even rush forward to stop Li Yanchu, he saw the sword-browed, sharp-eyed, and strikingly handsome young Daoist smash the villager’s head apart with a single slap.
“If you’re gonna drink, then drink. Quit putting on ghostly tricks. Cut the act, I’m not impressed[1]!” Li Yanchu cursed.
With this, the courtyard fell silent. A deathly, suffocating silence.
Old Daoist Huang was speechless. Damn it.
Since when were young people this reckless?!
Every villager in the courtyard suddenly fixed their gaze on Li Yanchu. The men, women, old, and young all stared at him.
The voluptuous bride’s eyes burned with venomous hatred, and her voice turned hoarse and twisted. “Why are you ruining my wedding banquet!”
Then, a savagely overwhelming dense wave of yin energy surged from her body! Perhaps it was the blood-red wedding dress, but her ghostly aura now seethed with a murderous edge.
Clang! The Jiaoslayer slid three cun from its sheath, and a blazing arc of saber energy tore through the air!
The ghost bride was cleaved clean in half on the spot, her form utterly annihilated by that domineering slash.
“Who the hell do you think you’re messing with?” Li Yanchu’s voice was ice-cold.
At that moment, a furious gale erupted, and the once-calm courtyard instantly boiled over with a storm of ghostly energy. Like pouring cold water into a pot of burning oil, it exploded outright!
Every single villager of Yang Family Town ripped off their human-skin disguises, revealing eerie, twisted eyes. They all lunged toward Li Yanchu, intent on tearing apart and devouring this reckless young Daoist!
Old Daoist Huang gaped at the scene in shock[2], and the talisman papers in his hands trembled uncontrollably. If it were just two or three ghosts, he might still have a chance to break through. But now, with an entire courtyard erupting in ghostly frenzy and their resentment boiling over, his old bones would probably be torn to shreds in an instant!
“Boundless Heavenly Venerable... this brat is impossible to reason with!”
Old Daoist Huang shut his eyes in agony, his heart heavy with grief and indignation.
There were so many ghosts, what was the point of struggling? Might as well give up resistance, strike a more graceful pose, and enjoy his last moment with a shred of dignity.
Human thoughts were lightning-fast. In his heart, Old Daoist Huang cursed furiously, yet in reality, those ghosts had only just lunged close to Li Yanchu.
“Under the bright sky of day, fierce ghosts rampage. Is this the human world, or the very depths of the underworld itself?!” Li Yanchu’s voice thundered like a clap of lightning.
Clang!
From the ancient saber in his hand, a mysterious resonance erupted, rippling outward in an instant. It swept out with unstoppable might, a force that crushed everything in its path.
Collapse Seal!
The resonance obliterated every ghostly wretch around him, snuffing them out completely. In the blink of an eye, the courtyard was cleared, emptied of all spirits!
Old Daoist Huang felt a wave of scorching heat rush toward him while his heart pounded wildly, thump, thump, thump!
When he opened his eyes again, the entire courtyard was empty. Every last ghost and evil spirit had been wiped out by a single strike from Li Yanchu!
“Holy hell! Could this young Daoist actually be some ancient Daoist master who’s preserved his youth!?” Old Daoist Huang’s eyes lit up in shock.
Guo Wei was equally dumbfounded.
He was a martial artist, though not a very good one, but his eyesight was still sharp. He could see the sheer dominance in that strike, and couldn’t help blurting out, “Damn! That’s fucking awesome!”
That was just how martial men expressed their awe; they were simple, blunt, and crude.
Before they could even step forward to offer their praise, a thunderous voice brimming with blood and vigor cracked in their ears, “No matter who you are, come out! Otherwise I’ll scatter this entire ghost domain to dust!”
In this despair-ridden ghost town, such a domineering declaration sounded deafening and earth-shaking. In that instant, the whole town seemed to come alive.
The villagers’ eyes turned eerie, one by one, and they surged toward the courtyard like a tidal wave.
Boom!
Li Yanchu’s body alone smashed through the courtyard wall, blasting a massive hole straight through it.
As dust and rubble billowed, Old Daoist Huang stood frozen, slack-jawed. There was no way this guy was some Daoist elder! This kind of brute force... was downright terrifying!
And what’s more, before the enemy had even come knocking, this young Daoist went and tore down the courtyard wall himself!? He truly didn’t put the entire town of ghost-slaves in his eyes at all!
Above Yang Family Town, yin energy gathered into rolling black clouds, and from within that darkness, streaks of glaring blood seeped through, which was a sight chilling to the bone!
1. 吓唬 (xiàhu) means to scare, to frighten, to intimidate, while 你爹 (nǐ diē) means your father.
But in colloquial Chinese, especially in a confrontational or joking context, “吓唬你爹” doesn’t literally mean “scaring your dad.” Instead, it’s used as a blunt, aggressive way to say “think you can scare me?” or “you’re not going to intimidate me”. The speaker is basically asserting dominance or mocking the other person’s attempt to act tough, mystical, or threatening. ☜
2. Here, I chose to translate “黄老道脸色大变” as “gaped at the scene in shock” because a literal rendering like “Daoist Huang’s facial expression changed drastically” would feel stiff and unnatural in English.
In Chinese, describing a character’s facial expression is a common way to indicate sudden shock, surprise, or alarm, but in English, readers generally expect a more active depiction of the reaction. By translating it as “gaped... in shock,” I aimed to convey both the immediacy and intensity of the change, while keeping the sentence vivid and readable. This choice prioritizes the emotional impact and cinematic quality of the scene over strict word-for-word accuracy. ☜
